Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - September 19, 1949, Winnipeg, Manitoba I Page 12 Winnipeg free press. Monday. September 19, 1949 agriculture picture for 1950 4 gloomy one for Prairies by Chester Bloom Ottawa sept. 19 special the big question in Western can Ada is How the extreme devaluation of the British Pound Sterling from s4.02 to s2.80 will affect West Ern agricultural and animal exports. The answer is not much immediately but very severely beginning in 1950. The British Pound Sterling Cut in purchasing Power in the Dollar area will not affect existing Bri Tish contracts such As wheat Bacon eggs and cheese. But when it comes to Mak Ink new contracts for the Calendar year 1950, the picture Lor the West is a gloomy one. During the remainder of the existing contracts Britain must pay for Canadian produce in Canadian dollars Par with the . Dollar. That s the reason Why the recent Washington conference agreed the . Would permit Britain to spent of Marshall plan Dol Lars in part payment of her exist ing contract to buy bushels of Canadian wheat at s2 a Bushel. The remaining Britain must pay out of her scanty Dollar reserves. But it is obvious that the Bri Tish in negotiating any new con tract to buy Canadian wheat a whether its Price is determined by the International agreement or not will not pay anything like s2 a Bushel in Canadian Money represent ing nearly three quarters of a de valued Pound Sterling. Individual negotiations the same Factor will apply to new 1950 British contracts for Bacon eggs and cheese. Indeed it is unlikely that any such contracts May be is More Likely to happen is that Britain will be a free Market where Canadian Sel lers will have to get the Best prices they can negotiate individually in Competition with other world producers. The severity of this impending blow at Vestern agricultural prices in 1950 can he visualized by a few figures of Canada s exports to Britain in terms of Canadian dollars for the Calendar year 1948 and for More Comfort wearing false Teeth Here is a pleasant Way to overcome Loose plate discomfort. Fas Teeth. An improved powder sprinkled on upper and lower plates holds them firmer so that they feel More comfortable. No Cummy gooey. Pasty taste or feeling. It s alkaline docs not sour. Checks plate odor denture get fas Teeth today at any Druc store. Advt. The seven months of 1949 end ing july 31. Approximately 78 per cent of Canada s agricultural exports go to Britain and the percentage of agricultural exports in total Canadian exports to Britain is still higher. For the full Calendar year of 1948, All Canada s exports to Bri Tain totalled and for seven months of 1949 they were Canada s total exports of vegetable and agricultural pro ducts to All countries for the full Calendar year 1948 were 000 and for seven months of 1949 they were but As pointed out above the great bulk of these went to. Britain. Animal products the above Export figures do not include animal products the great bulk of which excepting living Ani Mals and dressed beef go to Bri Tain. Canada s exports of these pro ducts during the full Calendar year 194s, the great bulk going to Bri Tain in terms of Canadian dollars were Bacon and hams cheese other milk pro ducts eggs Shell and processed for the seven months of 1949, these exports were Bacon and hams cheese milk of evaluating their currency in terms of the Canadian and . Dollars. To get this picture a Little clearer the devaluation of the British Pound from 54.02 to s2.so represents a Cut of about 30 be cent in its purchasing Power. If this operated automatically o the Price in terms of Canadian do Lars it would mean that on tha devalued Pound basis the 5686 of All Canadian exports t Britain in 1948 would have cos the British in equivalent Dian dollars instead in the same Way the of All Canadian exports to Britai in the seven months of 1949 woul have Cost the British on the s2.s Pound equivalent in Canadia dollars the total of reverse picture this is the reverse picture of the British attempt to Cut Down imports from the Dollar area while attempting to increase exports t the Dollar area. It is however obvious that the British will not be forced to a the full increase in Price of Cana Dian exports represented by the automatic addition of 30 per cell to equate the Dollar with the de valued Pound. Canadian compete lion among exporters will certain tend to hold the increased Price two escape injury products eggs shelled below a level where All Export and processed but the effect of the Pound Sterling devaluation goes much farther than the Price of Cana Dian agricultural exports to Britan in 1950, because other european importers of Cana Dian agricultural products Are following the British example Moke about Howse continued from Page 1 3 ways to get a disaster or. Of the total of 422 accounted for 72 were in St. Michael s Hospital 23 in Toronto general four in West Ern Hospital and 10 in the West Moreland hotel. Officials were handicapped by he difficulty of determining who had been in the ship. Or. Howse pointed out. In some cases tickets iad been resold before embark Ion and names were therefore in Correct on the passenger lists. Hope jewelry clue More than 90 per cent of the passengers Are thought to hav come from Detroit and Clevelan he said. But these cities Coul merely have been the centres which they bought their tickets. To add further confusion it not known How Many passenger left the ship to spend the night i Toronto. The presence of Toron residents aboard ship As guests a the time of the fire is also possible in the special morgue one room houses a collection of jewel gathered on the ship and another personal articles of clothing d Howse said. From these relative and friends May determine Whethe people sought were aboard. Streams of relatives Are arriving from the United states he said. Protestant ministers and roman Catholic priests Are on 24-hour the morgue to assist police of Cleveland an Detroit and special investigators o sales Are choked off. The Cut in the Pound s Pur chasing Power of 30 per cent in terms of dollars naturally operates in reverse in cheapen ing the Selling Price in Canada of British exports to the Dominion. It is not Likely that prices of British goods in can Ada will drop the full 30 per cent. There is no reason Why the British should have to shave their prices that much in any event to compete with Canadian prices. Nevertheless one May expect e spate of demands from Canadian manufacturers to enforce Canadian tariffs rigidly and particularly t demand full use of dumping duties which the Canadian govern Man has materially relaxed.
