To reconsider new tax policy the Winnipeg chamber of com Merce has requested the Federal government to reconsider its recently announce d policy regarding payments for local taxes and to provide Grants instead. At the Resolution was adopted a chamber Council meeting Day. While the Winnipeg group feels tote government should be commended for providing some Relief to municipalities in the form of partial payment of local taxes the following Points have been forwarded to Hon. Douglas Abbott minister of finance in the Resolution 1. That the Federal government be respectfully requested to re consider its proposal for the pay ment of local taxes on Federal properties and recast the same on m Ore equitable lines. 2. That the Federal government be requested to make Grants in lieu of taxes to the same extent As levied on other local taxpayers on All federally owned properties including property owned by Crown corporations engaged in business or Industry. 3. That the Federal government should make Grants in lieu of taxes to the same extent As levied on other local taxpayers on newly acquired properties and buildings erected thereon. The members declared the government s decision on tax payments would result in a Large number of municipalities receiving no payment what Ever although Federal build Ings Are within the municipalities in question. The Council also emphasized that certain municipalities which pro vide services for Federal buildings still receive nothing in return. Local taxes Council pointed out cover services benefiting Federal government buildings whether the total value of these buildings amounts to four per cent of the total assessment or not. A copy of the Resolution has been sent to mayor Garnet Coulter to the Manitoba Urban municipalities association and the Canadian federation of mayors and municipalities the Resolution will also be sponsored by the chamber at the Forth coming convention the Manitoba associated Chambers Commerce meeting in.
