Winnipeg free 27, 1950 Page 7 flooded cellar victims get advice from City in order to guard against danger from pollution by sewage the following instructions Are Given As to the Best methods to be adopted in order Sci restore cellars and basements which have been hooded to a sanitary condition As it May be some Days before the water subsides it might be Wel l As a precautionary measure at least in dwellings to sterilize the water in the cellars and most effective agent for this purpose is fresh Chloride of Lime. It is surprising what a Small amount of this germicide will disinfect a Large volume of water. A cellar i5 feet by 20 feet flooded five feet deep would contain approximately Gallons of water and for this volume of water 2% ounces of Chloride of Lime is ample. Mix it with a pail of water and As far As possible distribute it Over the surface of the water in the cellar same time agitating the water As Lar As this can be clone. Smaller cellars containing less water will not require so much Chloride of Lime. 2 after the water subsides which will occur in most cases automatically As soon As the pressure from the sewer is relieved All pud and filth should be removed. This can probably be washed Down the catch Basin. Do not use any vegetables or other articles of food which have been polluted by sewage or flood water. Flush Down the cellar Walls and floor with clean water and follow this toy an application of a solution of Chloride of Lime. Mix about one Pound in four Gallons of water. This May be further diluted and applied with a Broom. If preferred a solution of Izal May be used ounce of Izal to 20 pints of effective. 3. It May happen that some obstruction has been washed into the catch Basin trap which drains the cellar. In such cases if you cannot remove this yourself a plumber or licensed sewer Man should be called in at once. These men Are thoroughly familiar with the Best methods of handling such cases. It May even be necessary to pump the water out in order to get at the catch Basin. 4. In cellars with wooden Walls or floors the danger of pollution is much greater than in Stone Brick or Concrete basements wooden cellars and dug outs Are not now permitted under the Public health act Manitoba and should be rebuilt As soon As possible with Walls of Brick Stone or Concrete floors of Concrete properly graded to a Cement lined Brick catch Basin and with win Dows equal in area to the floor space. An occasion like this when so Many cellars of this kind Are flooded shows very _ clearly the reason for their prohibition and the difficulty of Render ing such cellars sanitary once they Are polluted with sewage. 5. Open up the windows so As to give the cellar a Chance to dry out. We recommend in addition after cleaning and disinfecting As above described that the Walls and tops of All cellars be Lime washed. Your cellar will then be clean and Sweet As Well As much lighter As the White Walls will refract and intensify the Light. If your lot has been flooded clean it up and Sprinkle Chloride of Lime or dry Lime Over any place from which filth has been removed.
