Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - May 23, 1952, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press Friday May 23, Page l6 the prospects of a possible four exhibition sacs Canada 11 weeks from now does t even bother George Trafton by those who won t have any Active participationgrowing furrows on their brows wondering the Blue and Gold migh be biting off More than they can Chew several persons have said Why wreck the Clubexhibition Kames. It is a marked change of attitude from that which reigned Lasi fall when Toronto argonauts were going to be the test but it was tha some game which helped bring about the pessimism. the third week in August last year which brought disaster in Winnipeg s front door. Starting in the exhibition with the Argos it was John Brown and Tommy Ford and As the season grew so did the injuries. The bombers never fully recovered from the loss of Brown whose line backing ability was to be a big cog in the Victory wheel. And. Point out the dissenters Why should the bombers take the Chance of losing key men again to took Winnipeg a Long time to beat the argonauts and when they did. Instead of capturing a Grey cup the supposition has been the Victory Cost the Peg the Silver Mug. Now the same situation arises. The bombers will play possibly in Ottawa. Montreal. Hamilton and Toronto. It s always Nice to be it Winner even if Only in the Grapefruit circuit and Trafton is the first guv to admit he hates to lose. His quarterback Jack Jacobs still carries a souvenir just to the Ift of his Windpipe As evidence the same Type of spirit. He twisted a few Bones around one afternoon in Regina when be tried to instill some spirit in a sagging club with a Devil May care drive into three roughriders. It took Trafton a Long time to make up his mind last year that he would really go after the Argos. He was convinced there was no percentage in such a Deal. As the game grew nearer the feelings of some of the players who had their ears pinned Back in the 1950 Grey cup final started to show. They wanted to Bear the Argos. And the fun. The fans big pc goo rate no peace. Everywhere he went he d run into someone who wanted to know if bombers would beat Toronto. It was Only a Fexy Days before game time he finally decided in for broke. He wound Tifi Winner and still lost. One of the big reasons was the club s Lack of depth. The line was weak and the Backfield was even More so. Capable reserves were few and far Between. When Trafton Heads East in August he fully intends to take almost a Complete regiment with him. I there Are injuries hell have the replacements. As a Means toward that end this Spring Camp being run nightly a Tushy help. By the end of next week when the Camp will close Trafton will want to take More than a few of the Beys up to the tall workouts. But even there he is having trouble. When the Camp opened there were 55 attending. There were Al on hand last night. Trafton has had to Call off scheduled workouts for tonight and saturday. Too Many prospects have asked for a night off to attend graduation exercises or something. However among the Crew which attend faithfully each night Are the ones who have shown up Best since the practices began. Steve Patrick of Winnipeg Light infantry Malcolm Wigg Weston wildcats. Jim Palmer of Weston. Cece a Twining of St. John s tech Grant Sims of Weston. And until last night when he did t show. Bill Hutton of . Lome Benson of Weston. Who was up with the bombers for the Tail end of last season All keep rolling. Who knows maybe Trafton will have no worries when the club starts travelling. He might even find hell have to win All those games. Up yardage sol kampf bomber line coach in 1950 arrived in town last night. Caught the finish of the workout. He be around for the week end. Buddy Tinsley was out shedding the pounds last night. Harold Mauthe was sporting a couple of stitch he received in a run in with Benson the night before.
