An unsigned letter reads ii read your column every Day. Please answer a question for me. My daughter is years old and healthy. She eats an egg Cereal milk and Toast for breakfast. At noon she has meat potatoes vegetables salad pudding and milk. At night she has Cereal meat milk bread and fruit. Of course she eats very Little of what is Given her. Why won t she sleep i have to spank her to make her take a Nap and sometimes it is an hour before she can get to sleep. I have rocked patted and every thing else but she won t sleep until she spanked and gets tired of crying. She needs a Nap As otherwise she gets crabby. What shall i let her choose you keep slamming doors in the face of any advice. First you out line a very full diet but admit the child eats very Little of it. Then you make it difficult to advise no naps by saying sleep makes her crabby. Since you. Want to change the present situation you have to do something different. For one thing there is no real value in sleep which is the result of exhaustion from punishment. Maybe she would t be so crabby if you gave her permission to sleep or stay i awake As she chose and then let her lie quietly for an hour or so. When there is no pressure upon a child to sleep the drowsiness if it is present will have an Opportunity to work. Now she has to defy you and keep herself awake so you Are defeating your own purpose. How about vitamins you do provide enough food but you do not mention either Vitamin p or Vitamin c and both of those Are vitally important. Maybe just the addition of two or three ounces of Orange juice daily or ascorbic and some form of i Tamthi d in adequate dosages would be the very things to bring about greater nerve stability in your child and a capacity to sleep. If she takes no Nap but just rests and plays in bed for an hour or so she will be in the mood for sleep when bedtime arrives so there should be no fight and no need for punishment a dreadful preliminary to restful slumber. At least give these a trial. A Reader wants to suggest from her own experience that when children have Ammoniacal diapers that it May be because they do not get enough fluids in their diets. Mere water soup drinks of All kinds juices etc., May help with out any other remedies to get rid of this unpleasant odor.
