The Winnipeg builders Exchange presents the following facts regarding the strike of electrical workers in Winnipeg last april electrical workers were offered a further increase of 15c in hourly rates to commence May 1st. This offer was refused by the Union. But a similar rate of increase was accepted by workers in All other building trades in Winnipeg. 2. As a result electrical workers during 1951 received higher average annual pay than any other building tradesmen in Winnipeg namely an wage of approximately for that year. 3. Electrical workers who Are members of local 435, International brotherhood of electrical workers have received wage increases of Loc per hour in each year for the past six years namely a total increase since 1946 of 60c an hour. 4. Up to the time of the strike electrical contractors were still willing to pay the 1 5c per hour increase formerly offered Retro Active to May 1st. This would have brought a Journeyman electrician s minimum hourly wage to which would constitute a total increase of 75c per hour since 1946. 5. In the View of the Winnipeg builders Exchange Home building and other construction costs have now become nearly prohibitive. It is therefore contrary to the Public interest that building costs should again be inflated by a Cycle of unreasonable wage demands such As that now being made by the electrical workers. Go it should also be known that this strike is a discriminatory strike insofar As it is being made effective against Only the five con tractors with whom the Union has always had agreements and no strike was called against approximately two Hundred other electrical con tractors with whom it has never had agreements. It should be further noted that a big majority of the striking electricians were engaged on defence projects.
