Page in Winnipeg free press monday August 25, 1952 costly As stomps nip bombers bomber s great punt return team Casey and James Cerry James fancy stepping fools Paul Salata Saskatchewan rides asks 25-5 Tom Casey leaves Bob Mckay grasping air dark horse riders open impressively t by Scotty Melville Regina special rated As dark horses even by their Home fans on the strength of exhibition wins by the other three clubs in the conference Saskatchewan roughriders upset the dope bucket with a sound football performance saturday by whipping Edmonton eskimos 25-5 in Blister ing 90-degree Sunshine. Riders were never spectacular but they were solid and made few mistakes. Winnipeg fans might still remember that 33-1 game of last season when the riders took Over Osborne stadium As if they owned it. Well they played tha kind of football without the trim mings on saturday and the asks were no great threat even in the few times they did get into pay off territory in the Saskatchewan end. To give the asks their due Frankje Filchock s club was far from Sharp. They might have picked up a couple of touch Downs if the ends had bean More Alert at least twice passes handed on a Platter were dropped but in the the weather was hot saturday night. But you could t say the same thing for the Winnipeg Blue bombers. Matter of fact i bowing to Calgary stampedes the club was a great disappointment. We do not say it was a disappointment because the stampedes beat them. That was just one of those things. A fumbled Ball at a crucial stage in the game and that was it. Territorially the bombers outplayed Les Lear and company what did disappoint the customers was the fact that the Are supposed to have a wonderful new set of plays did t do anything that they did t do last year. If the bombers have some Tricky new plays for the 1952 football Campaign then they left them All behind in the dressing room at Canada packers where of course they weren t the slightest bit of use. For the past two years the bombers greatest weakness has been the Lack of a tunning game. In the air there was no club in Canada that could come close to them. It has been i said that this season the club had remedied thin deficit. If this is so we along with a few thousand other at saturday night s game Are wondering Why Jack Jacobs and coach George Trafton failed to put it to use. There was ample Opportunity. Four times tote bombers were 5nside the Calgary 15-Yard line. Yet Jacobs chose to pass rather than run the Ball. This we can t understand. Last year coach George Trafton always pointed out that the bombers did better on the Road because the end zones in Edmonton Calgary and Regina were 25 Yards deep whereas the end zones in Osborne stadium is Only 10 Yards. This extra depth allowed the bomber pass receivers to get in behind the defenders. Some thing that they can t do in Osborne stadium this being the Case it stands to reason that once you re inside the five Yard line at Osborne stadium the Normal procedure would be to run the Ball. As the bombers will play eight games in Osborne stadium it would seem that an important feature of Winnipeg s game should be a sound ground attack. If bombers have the ability to strike along the this boy Mcallister looked pretty Good the few times he carried the Why not do it. A game won in Winnipeg counts for two Points the same As they do in Edmonton. We the he we know Why the bombers played it the Way they did saturday we re not interested in seeing Jack Jacobs break his own Forward passing record. And we Don t think coach Trafton is either so maybe matters will be rectified tonight. Up to this Point we be had few kind words to say for the bombers. So to switch Over to the brighter Side we think they have a better football club than they had in 1951. They Iare much stronger defensively and if there better lines in the Western conference we re going to enjoy Hing them perform. As we mentioned earlier this boy Ralpk Mcallister looks like he can go with the Ball when Given the Opportunity. And Young Gerry James in the Backfield is a most useful addition to the club. His unfortunate Fumble is just one of those things and we Hope the Young Man has forgotten about it already. Matter of fact it actually should t have made any difference to the outcome of the game. The bombers have a potentially great football. Team which probably could be the greatest Winnipeg has Ever had. Maybe it will reach the Heights if some Guys make a Bonfi re with those clippings from the Eastern Canada newspapers. Long run the charging rider line had too much to say about what was going on and Doug Belden Back with the team after a year s absence kept them guessing from his quarterback Slot. Belden played it smartly All the Way and had coach Glenn Dobbs smiling. The Dobber with unruly Muscles in his kicking leg did not play. But he has no worries with Belden. He has no worries even if he never kicks again. In Butch Avinger who can also Quarter riders uncovered a 70-Yard Hoofer who made his presence Felt. Ken Charlton Sully Glasser and Nellie Greene picked up plenty of important yardage along the ground and Young Wayne Ander son the sex Saskatoon Junior who scored a major in senior game is a find in the Speed department. Holland stretch Aplin the end from Tampa University Dis played terrific catching ability and made his two touchdowns look easy. Hell make his Mark in the conference. John Prechek a tackle who came on his own Hook from Seattle is a find. Tie other imports toe Mas Nighelli a tackle who takes the kickoffs and the centres Jim Bensley and red Phillips fitted in Well and looked of conference calibre. Martin Ruby at tackle and the line coach was his usual self. Tour Springstein Art Mcewan Johnny Bell Jack Russell and the Dobber were those sidelined be cause of injuries. Art Stewart an i import halfback was not dressed for the game. Winnipeg fans will see Frankie Filchock s eskimos tonight and they can do their own judging. Regina West Ern football champions Saskatchewan roughriders started in where they left off last year by drubbing Edmonton eskimos 25-5 saturday in the opening game of the 1952 . Season. Tic riders jumped off to a 7-0 Lead in the first Quarter and stretched it to 13-0 at half time. They scored a converted touch Down in each of the third and fourth quarters while Edmonton got their Only Points with an unconverted major late in the game. Holland Aplin led rider scores by catching two touchdown passes. Tony Hungle and Wayne Anderson did the honors for the other Saskatchewan majors. Del Wardien convened four touchdowns. Butch Avinger added the other Point on a kick to the deadline. A capacity crowd of 12.000 shirt sleeved fans attended the the largest opening Day crowd on record. Hungle a rugged 200-Pound defensive end registered the first touchdown for riders. Avinger forced Edmonton Back to their own five Yard line with a tremendous 65-Yard spiral. On the first running play Roy Enright and Norm Kwong fumbled a lateral passing Exchange and Hungle pounced on the Loose Ball in the end zone. Near the end of the Quarter Avinger looped a 50-Yard spiral to the Fence to make it 7-0. Doug Belden who Quarter backed the club in the absence of Glen Dobbs opened up in the second Quarter after Ken Charlton ran for 10, Belden passed to Aplin for 16. Then from the rider 52 he hit by Bob mob a pair of starry rookies fumbled saturday night and the ensuing damage resulted in a pair of touch Downs for As the stamped ers surprised the football world with a 12-8 Victory Over Winnipeg Blue bombers As the 1952 football season officially arrived. Len Meltzer 182-Pound halfback from St. John s High and the St. Boniface kiwanis juniors made a Beautiful 10-Yard run before being hit by a mob of Stamps and fumbling shortly before the end of the first half. Two passes later the first a flukey but still Brilliant affair the Cal Arians had Cut deep into an Early bomber Lead on a touchdown by Paul Salata. It was is the teams were battling doggedly Early in the fourth Quarter that 17-year-old Gerry James one of. The most popular players to Don a bomber uniform in years was from the Blind Side by two Stamps As he was ready to loss a lateral to pull Lunback mate Tom Casey. He was creamed before he could tuck Thi Hall Back in and the collision squirted it out of his hands. A Bill Pullar to sex Winnipeg Ger Stan Kalu Triick to Dave West on a three Way lateral ran the Ball Over to give the Stamps their first Only and sufficient Lead. Bob Shaw converted both Cal Gary majors. Tough for .1a.moss it was a Tough break for James who just after the game started look a Keith Spaith kick on the Calgary 33 on the dead run and blasted All the Way for a touch Down. A roughing the kicker pen Alty called on Dean Bandiera nullified the major. James later Shook Casey away on a Brilliant 40-Yard Lunback with a Fine lateral while he him self picked up plenty of Yards in run backs. The Fumble was first in four games. Bombers took an Early Lead set up riders third major. He ground the Ball on the Edmonton 40. The Belden to Aplin pass was Good for 24 Yards. Then Anderson a Young Saskatoon Hilltop guard sped 16 Yards around end for the score. Riders wound up the scoring on two Belden to Aplin passes. The first. Was Good for 21 Yards and m or s wsk1n Paraf if a person was looking for excitement laughter and enjoyment saturday night around the place not to be was near a Blue bomber. They were a quiet and morose lot after Calgary Sla Peders had done what Ottawa rough riders Hamilton Tiger cals and Toronto argonauts had not been Able to the bomber offence close to the goal line. Bombers were thoroughly disgusted with losing the game but not completely disgusted with their defensive play. It worked out. That the defence was All could have been Vorse if Stan Heath had been pulling the Ball anywhere to his is soon As those big fences Al each end of Osborne stadium loomed up the bombers seemed to Forgiel How to play offence. Ford s came on the first play he substituted for Vaccher at end the first time Tommy has played the position in league action while Felker s came right at the finish of the game when Jacobs was striving desperately to put the bombers Back into the thick of things. Then Jack was rushed and the pass went awry. Bombers As a whole did t look like the club which ran rough shod Over a weak Ottawa team was ready opportunists against a talented Hamilton Crew or stopped a fired up Toronto club in the dying minutes in varsity stadium. There was none of the Sharpness on attack that led bombers to 10 touchdowns in three games while the line did t look like the Over All sparkling unit which brought Praise from All angles in the East. Of course they weren t called on to do much of anything but protect the passer. Dick Huffman and buddy Tinsley were by far the outstanding linemen with John Brown and Dean Bandiera help ing out although not anywhere close to the Eastern fashion. Playing the unfamiliar outside secondary Ernie Becker the re placement for Chuck Lumsden played a Good game coming up fast to make several tackles. Trafton Diin t Piny Joe Zaleski on offence at All but the former University of Dayton quarterback was the bomber safety Man the entire route. And he made a rom one knocking flown several names unit intercepting one even though it was nullified by u holding penalty. Although Jacobs got Mcallister and Casey away on a couple of Good runs at no Lime Dirl the running attack look the Way in docs when Zak ski is swinging the Ball on a Yoyo string in the bomber Buck Fiell. In the East Traylon would use Zaleski who can pass in Settle the defence by running the rookies All Over the Field. Then Jacobs would come in Boom it was Alt Over. Zaleski would come out run the club All Over the Field Jacobs would step in Boom another touchdown. With Jacobs going the whole route saturday and throwing at every Opportunity there was no variety to unsettle the Stamps. Calgary did to seem to worry about the bomber ground game their linebackers not even playing close to the line on several Occas ions taunting Jacobs to pass again. On the other hand the bomber defence had their work Cut out for them especially when Johnny Bright was playing out of the spread. They did t know whether or not the former Drake Star was going to pass or run and in the dying minutes he proved it by sucking the entire bomber line in and then running around the Short Side for 26 Yards. Bright who throws a pass in the manner of an outfielder re laying a Ball to the Catcher was also deadly in this department throwing three completing two notching one touchdown. The two fumbles were Only in that they resulted in touchdowns. There is a tremendous amount of pressure brought to Bear on a Rookie playing before Hometown fans for the first time in an important role. Meltzer whose first half Fumble led to the initial Stampede major had done spot work for bombers in 1950, but Only when the team was badly beaten or Well ahead. He is now Tom Casey s re placement and doing a Fine Job. He played Good Ball after the Fumble just missing running Back the second half kick off for a touchdown when the last Man nailed him. It was impossible to James to continue the Brilliant Pace he has set since first stepping on the Field at Ottawa without fouling up somewhere. The youngster received a huge hand from the crowd whenever he left the Field is undoubtedly a fan favorite and although his first Fumble was costly it will soon be it already has t. The Fumble was his second bad break in. The game the first coming when the touchdown he scored off one of Spaith Early punts were nullified by a roughing the kicker penalty. _ when it came to running Calgary with Bright the exception once and Stan Kaluznik another time could t do anything against the bomber front Wall. The one glaring weakness in the bomber attack was at end but if Ron Vaccher had been playing his usual game it probably would t have been so. Vaccher can usually be counted upon at All times. Sat urday night s display can be tossed off As just one of things. At the other end Keith Pearce who has come along in great fashion this year caught everything thrown at him for a total gain of 43 Yards on four passes. It was the first starting assignment for Pearce a former Winnipeg Rod and he came through admirably. Meltzer was the Only Rookie Back to see much action. Trafton went All the Way with Andy Sokol at right half inserting lome Ben son into the game As a substitute for Ralph Mcallister in the defensive Backfield. Benson knocked Down one pass there will be no changes in tonight s lineup for the bombers.
