She has been in Canada since last november. By Erika Neuhauser recent immigrants of German origin who live in Winnipeg like those who have settled in various parts of Rural Manitoba Are slip Ping the shackles of the past and working hard to Canadian citizens. Success slipping the shackles immigrants thriving in new found Freedom Heinz Codd 43, of 407 Sherbrook Street and Engineer with his fam ily left his Home in Thuringia which is now in the russian zone of spent from 1945 until 1d51 in the Western zone. He came to Canada in septem Ber of last year. The immigration commission in Karlsruhe told him he could find a Job in his own profession. As it turned out there were no openings in it when hear Rived first at Toronto. Worked in Camp his knowledge of the English language was poor and he was sent to a Small Camp in Northern on Tario where he worked As a lock Smith. He lived in the Camp for two months saving his Money so that he could travel farther West he received a letter from a Friend telling him about an air Craft factory in Winnipeg that was looking for skilled workers. He obtained a Job Here starting at 51.05 an hour. By december he Hac saved enough Money to Send the fare amounting to 5350, to his wife and children in Germany. I found mrs. Codd to be a Calno Fine featured woman of 38 who like her husband comes from a Middle class German family. She has a fairly Good educational Back ground. Soon after her arrival in Winnipeg she obtained a Job As clean ing woman working from 6 Until Midnight. Her husband who arrives Home from work at 6 ., looked after the children. They Are living in a two room apartment and Are Sav ing their Money so they can make a Down payment on a House one with space for a Garden at the rear. Smiling mrs. Codd said the Only things she misses Here Are Cherry and Apple Trees. As soon As we get our own we Hope to get one this fall to i will Plant them in our own Garden. We Are used to picking fruit and berries from our own Bushes and Trees. They taste so different from what you buy at the store. And my husband likes to spend he evenings working in his vege table she added save every Penny or.
