Adult the greatest love Story you have Ever seen i Gregory Peck Susan Hayward Ava Gardner Neffue Otoku omit lung limelight Chaplin s l i m e Light which opened at the Odeon theatre Friday is pne of the most paradoxical films in the history of movies. It is compounded of sheer dullness and Genius. Chaplin the great pantomime is must be perceived fitfully in a Long painfully motivated plot shot through with the most maw Kish kind of philosophical dial Ogue. As a composer Chaplin is second rate As a Ballet choreographer he is dreadful but As an exponent of the great Art of pantomime he stands among the elect. The last reel or so of limelight in which or. Chaplin with the assistance of Buster appears in a wordless skit about a violinist and a fumbling piano accompanist is perhaps the most Hilar ious single scene in the history of films. This is the sort thing in w h i c h Chaplin can Lake the Art of Clown org to dizzy Heights of virtuosity., compounded As it is that uncanny sense of Chaplin timing and manipulation of an Absurdity into Side splitting hilarity. I doubt any comedian in our lifetime could duplicate it. This is a scene which makes use of the technique that Chaplin developed in his Early Days fortified by sound As the violinist alternately flounders weeps and rejoices in a concert version of a Gypsy rhapsody. It is Worth sit Ting the whole picture through. There Are other c o m p e n nations in the movie too. They Are rare often very fleeting but they show what a movie Lime Light could have been if Chaplin had not tried to be the Complete artist in one writing his own dialogue music and choreography and detailing what he wanted in the Way of photographic angles. Limelight lasts two hours and 23 minutes. It should have lasted 90 minutes at the most. Still work ing on his theme about the Clown and the Waif Chaplin has sought to give it cosmic significance. Be has Only succeeded in making it a Long winded series of oratorical flourishes. Chaplin plays a fading Clown who has lost his touch. He be friends a stricken Ballerina Claire Bloom and sees her through to Success As his own career slips Down the ladder. Then in a burst of late Blooming vitality the com Edian gives a last glorious performance and Dies at the moment his protege is basking in the Lime Light. In telling this tale Chaplin has not minded the footage. Is lets scenes go on and on Anil on just for the purpose of inserting banal dialogue. His so called original Ballet is in its second at any rate a plodding steal of Giselle com plete with Tombstone. Seldom is the camera manipulated with any degree of imagination be ing merely focused on a scene. From a technical Point of View limelight is at least 25 years behind the times. Nevertheless in some respects it represents an improvement on the Chaplin formula. This time in Stead of a wooden doll of an a f Tress As his Lead ing lady he has selected the Rad i want and gifted Claire Bloom. Miss Bloom done Fine work on the stage and from this initial film appearance it is Plain that she is going to be4 in High demand Claire Bloom As a Star in her own right. Everything she does in limelight in touchingly right and there is scene after scene which she makes notable solely by her Lum Inous personality. Another Fine actor in limelight is Chaplin s son Sydney who plays the Young composer in love with miss Bloom. He is handsome gives a great Deal of conviction to what he does and should be Given fur ther opportunities. Elsewhere the performers in limelight Are just foils for Chaplin although Nigel Bruce manage to get a great Deal of individuality into is port Rait of a wealthy London manager Andre Eglevsky and Melissa Hay Den Are the Solo dancers in the Ballet sequence but get Little Opportunity to score. Limelight for this reviewer is a great disappointment. But it is Well Worth seeing for the flashes of Chaplin Genius Anil for that one extended sequence at the end. And one must t forget a Tri Bute to Buster Keaton who gives us proof that in his own Era he was a priceless comic.
