Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 8, 1952, Winnipeg, Manitoba Page 6 Winnipeg free press monday december 8, 1957 the Iron curtain 8ebun 4v chinese Swallow wild atrocity tales 13th article How Many americans and canadians know that their soldiers in Korea Are accused of having committed the most appalling atrocities some of you May re member having read one Day in a newspaper that a commission formed by the International association of democratic jurists a communist organization had made a Survey in Korea and had formally accused american troops committing War crimes and atrocities. And then we heard no More about it. On the other Side of the Iron curtain stories of atrocities committed by . S Are of the most common subjects of conversation. All the speakers at the piping peace Congress including the american delegates them selves vigorously denounced these Law. If we Are to follow this Prin Ciple we would be obliged to reject the entire testimony of the 27 witnesses to the massacres which the american trops Are accused of. I Don t say to lat atrocities weren t committed Lut i am forced to say in All honesty that the report of the so called demo cratic jurists is not at All convincing. I wanted to find out what a number of the delegates thought about this. I deliberately picked lawyers journalists and sociologists from among the 367 delegates and the 23 guests of Honor. I wanted to poll people who might be expected to have the necessary background to give an opinion on such a serious report. I asked All of them the same question do you believe the atrocity charges Laid against american crimes. I did t meet a single j troops in Don t read report without a single exception they answered certainly. did you read the report of the e commission organized by the International association of demo crimes which the american troops were accused of. During the Congress we were handed a report of the commission formed by the International association of democratic jurists. I took the trouble to read and Analyse it. One thing struck me right away. That seas the Speed with which the commission had carried out its inquiry. Members of the commission stayed in Korea Only from March 3 to March 19, 52, yet in the report dozens of tic a of them answered acts of atrocity were judged University of g one of the acts alone would 1l taken several Days or even weeks of inquiry. Sample atrocities i was particularly struck by chapter four which was massacres murders and other the first part of the chapter contained 27 separate and definite accusations of atrocities against the civilian population of North Korea. Let s look at a couple of them. On oct. 17. 1950. In the boo Joung i District the americans forced four men and women into a cellar. On oct. 18, at seven . The americans covered them with Oil and burned them in the Village of sol Mari 2000 persons men and women were captured and killed in different ways during the american occupation. Among them were one year old children and 70-year-old an Eye witness told the com Mission How including several women were Cut Down in the Mari mountains on dec. 5, 1950, by order of the american commanding officer who was in charge of the military Garrison. These persons were machine Dunne just before the american treat. Members of the commis Sion saw the place where the execution took place and the Graves of the victims. The Graves were opened for inspection by the these charges picked at ran Dom give you a fair idea of the accusations which Are being made against the americans in Korea. Never More than one there is one thing however that strikes anyone who is in the least doubtful. It is that in each of the 27 accusations outlined in the first part of chapter four there is always Only one witness to testify. In each of the 27 cases by some Happy Chance one person has escaped or survived his wounds and is Able to Tell the commission members what went tests unus testis is a universally recognized principle of then what evidence do you use to support your belief that Amer ican troops have committed atrocities in the usual reply was on the reputation of the jurists who pre the report. Prof. Henrick teaches International i r a a Austria he is an eminent Jurist and we have Confidence in his judgment and his impartiality just As have in the other members of the commission. We re not competent to judge these things so we pass the responsibility Over to the when you hear that sort of thing from people who Are uneducated you can understand it but when Vou hear it from the Mouths of journalists it is a disquieting sign the Lack of a critical sense really hits you in the Eye during a peace conference. No one ask questions and no one asks himself questions. No one tries to see the other Side of the Story or the opposite Point of View. The listeners Swallow everything even the most fantastic things. I remember one particularly extraordinary scene. It happened near the end of the Congress. It had just been announced that an Indian Painter would present a picture to the Congress a picture which he had painted during his sleepless nights. There was music a Parade and the solemn presenta Tion of the painting to the president who sat on the stage with the members of the praesidium. He unrolled the cloth and there before our eyes was a frightful looking woman exhibiting an enor Mous Navel. The sight was one of the funniest i have Ever seen Dur ing such a solemn occasion. Only about 20 people in the audience held their sides and took five min utes but to laugh. All the other delegates leaped to their feet and applauded with the utmost frenzy. This Lack of a critical spirit be comes serious when it is shown in such serious matters As War and peace. A warning the americans would do Well to study the accusations which Are being made against them in Korea and not to take them lightly. Some minister hits Church lotteries it is ironical and silly that games of Chance and Raffles Are sponsored by organizations in the interests of promoting religion and Public welfare Rev. J. Esek Stewart said sunday at Sparling United Church. Speaking on the menace of gambling he it is a disgrace that churches should enjoy a privileged position in the gambling the most unfortunate part of the set up is that by promoting and endorsing or even patronizing Raffles and lot teries he said we Are train ing our children to be Gamb it is because of this Start in life that As men and women they Are found to be inmates of the so called gambling Den. Rev. Stewart said gambling of any sort for any reason is a sign of moral degeneracy and spiritual bankruptcy be cause it is based on wrong motives. The desire to get something for nothing is evil and morally wrong he said. Fellow unionists Honor Anderson Aid. V. B. Anderson treasurer of the Winnipeg trades and labor Council tic was Hon ored this week by All Union representatives business agents and staff in the labor Temple. The occasion was or. Ander son s 49th wedding anniversary. On behalf of the gathering Robert Holmes president of the Council made a presentation to or. And he said or. Are serious notably the use of i Anderson was chosen during the napalm bombs and the razing of villages and towns with no Strate Gic value. There Are others such As those we have discussed above which have not been proved and which seem by All accounts to have been invented out of whole cloth. But there Are More a thou Sand million orientals who Are quite ready to believe them. Winnipeg convention of tic As chairman of the provincial executive of Manitoba. In his reply or. Anderson said labor made a tremendous Progress from the Days when he remembered carpenters were getting 15 cents per hour working 72 hours a week.
