. Jait Oatt a mb3 Page mining development at Yellowknife great slave Lake discovery promises big Lead Zinc mine _ Cinco in the Rich and very i eighth of a series from fort Smith we Fol Lowed the line of the slave River meandering in Broad sweeps below us to fort Reso Lution there we continued North Over great slave Lake and came once again across the hazards of travel in this coun try. Unexpectedly and rapidly visibility became very poor and we had to Fly Low to the Rocky North Shore of the Lake and then follow it As Best we could with the aircraft bumping violently to the Small Bay at Yellowknife. The Pilot did not conceal his Relief when we were safely Down. At Yellowknife it was Windy and cold and Barren. Gold was first discovered Here in 1934, rather later than at Gold Fields and Here also the mines were shut Down during the War. But since then the his tory of the two towns has been very different. The yellow knife Ore is Rich and output is expanding not contracting rising wages and material costs have been offset by improve ments in productivity. Successful town the mines look impressively modern and the town of Yellowknife has wide Well Laid out streets and substantial looking buildings. The Cost of providing utilities on this Rocky exposed site is probably even higher than at flin flon but earnings Ere also High and the town seems in every Way successfully to defy its Environ ment almost everything about it looks modern and the popu lation of Over lives comfortably and Well. My interest however was less in Yellowknife itself than in the fact that it is the Pioneer town in country that shows every Promise of becoming in time at least e great mining District. Uranium has been found at Marian Lake North West of Yellowknife while base Metal developments Are Tak ing place at Many Points round great slave Lake. The most advanced is at Oconnor Lake where underground work is going on and the prospects of establishing a Lead and Zinc mine Are believed to be Good. Also to the East of yellow knife is Joe Indian Mountain where what May be a particularly Rich Ore is be ing explored. Rich Ore body the major discovery How Ever lies on the South Shore of great slave Lake in the neighbourhood of Pine Point. As far As present prospects go it is this if anything that May change the whole life and economics of the area by making it profitable to push a railway into the South Centre of the Northwest territories. The existence of Lead Zinc Ore at Pine Point was first noticed at the end of the nineteenth Century but the country for Long seemed too Remote for base Metal mining to Windatt Coal co. Ltd. Coax. Coke Wood 506 Paris bldg. Phone 92-7404 License no. 2 Rich and very Ore body Flat lying for the most part at shallow Depths and in places As much As 100 feet thick. The known Ore lies in a Belt Paral Lel to the Lake Between the Little Buffalo and Buffalo Rivers about 40 Miles Long and five Miles wide. Technical questions by t. W. Kent this is one of a series of articles by , assistant editor of the economist and London correspondent of the fret Tress who recently merits in the Canadian Northwest. Me of the great develop Citable. Interest quickened in the later twenties when Metal prices were High and the Aero plane had made prospecting easier. Later in Toronto i met a famous Bush flier who recalled Landing a party of prospectors at Pine Point in 1929. But in the depression this geological examination and drilling were abandoned and Pine Point again Lay dormant until after the War. In 1948 a Large Concession was granted to the two companies consolidated smelters and ventures and in five years of intensive drilling they have established the existence of a the exploratory work has assumed major dimensions with As Many As 150 men engaged this summer. What is at Issue now is not the Richness of the resources but the economics of their exploitation. Some technical questions about the mining have still to be answered. A railway to Pine Point would have to come 400 Miles North from Grinshaw follow ing roughly the route of the Hay River Road but keeping to the East of Buffalo Lake. The terrain is easy for track laying but even so the length of the line would make it a major undertaking. There Are several possible Power Sites within an economic distance the one that is most Likely to be used is Mountain rapids on the fort Fitzgerald fort Smith Portage where As was said in the pre Vious article Power can easily be developed. Drilling for Gas hospitals soon to get new Secretary b. G. Goodman p. D. Shannon Robert g. Goodman has been appointed executive Secretary of the associated hospitals of Mani Toba j. M. Mclntyre president has announced or. Goodman succeeds Paul d. Shannon who is to become comp troller of the Royal Victoria hos Pital in Montreal. Approximately 80 hospitals Are members of the provincial association. Prior to his appointment or. Goodman was with the firm of William m. Hurley and company chartered accountants. He will assume his new duties this month drilling for natural Gas is taking place on the Hay River and if this is successful it is conceivable that Lead and Zinc might be smelted inside the Northwest territories. According however to such things As the value of the smelter by products particularly sulphuric it might be More economic to ship the Sulphide concentrates from Pine Point in that Case they might go South to the consolidated company s existing smelter at Trail or perhaps to a new smelter for which the natural site would presumably be in the Edmonton area. As yet All this is speculation. Investigation has gone so fares the selection of definite Sites for the main Shaft of the first mine and for a town 12 Miles from the Lake Shore. But a definite decision on whether or not to go ahead can hardly be made before the end of next year and May be delayed until 1954. It would be another three years before production began. What can be said with certainty is that if. Pine Point is exploited at All it will be a Large scale undertaking at least comparable in importance to the Labrador Iron Ore development that is now under Way. And once a railway and plentiful Power had been taken into this area important other developments would certainly follow. Prospecting would be intensified other mining in the great slave area would almost certainly become economic and farming on much of the land near the route of the railway would probably follow. Snakes and tar Sands night performances London up City zoos will be open to the Public at nights during the Coronation season next summer. Premises will be adorned by Bright lights including artificial Moonlight to lure nocturnal Birds and animals into the Public View.
