Scalp examination and advice is free a j 32 years of Success by Frank Morriss the actors Guild tackled Emlyn Williams crime melodrama night must fall at the playhouse theatre monday night under the auspices of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. It was in Many respects a Slick thoroughly rehearsed production but one which either glossed Over Many of the possibilities of the play or blunted them with mechanical interpretation. Night must fall is not a Good play but it is a cleverly written one. On too close examination it roves to be absurdly transparent. Experienced players mindful of his will conceal it with technical Sleights of hand. There were times on monday night when the tension aught hold but on others the per orders were left with author Emlyn Williams Bald script in their hands. Tempo takes toll the Pace was a fast one so fast As a matter of fact that there was not nearly enough use made of significant pauses and the development of atmospheric detail. The Tempo too and the dropping of voices at the end of key lines resulted in some i audibility and Jie prologue which sets the grim mood of the Story was omitted. Admittedly the play is a shallow one which is showing its age but this is All the More cause for imaginative direction. Helen Winston who plays the Central role of mrs. Bramson in whose Forest Bungalow the play takes place is a Good actress. But monday night she was skimming Over the part. Mrs. Bramson was a self centred Strong minded Petu Lent old horror who Well deserved to be strangled with a Pillow. In miss Winston s Conception she was too much the old dear and she did t dominate scenes As she should. Mechanical Niece Peggy Green As Olivia her repressed Niece fascinated by a murderer was almost completely mechanical particularly in the last act. It is a mistake for a director to try to take a leading role at the same time and mrs Green had too much on her hands. The principal role of Danny the murderer often had a Clever performance from Bernard Behrens but it is a terrifically difficult part for any but a very experienced actor. Danny must have Charm shyness and even when he is at his most relaxed there must be the undercurrent of mental disorder. His performance was too uneven. Closer acquaintance with the part will enable him to see More of its possibilities. Quite the Best performance of the evening came from mrs. Robert Tarman As mrs. Terence the Cook. This was a performance full of the right flavor. Mrs. Tarman has the wonderful asset of making a line sound completely Impromptu and giving a comic inflection just the right timing. She was followed in order of excellence by Des Kearney who gave an incisive performance of the police inspector better left out Arch Mcdonell did Well As Hubert the matter of fact suitor but he was trying for a Crisp English accent and it did not come off. When in doubt about an accent it is better to leave it out. Brydon found the role of Dora the Slatterly maid beyond her capacities. Beth Ferguson was competent As a nurse. The play will be repeated tues Day night and later on will be entered in the Manitoba regional tests of the Dominion drama festival. 10 Minnedosa co oops form new Council Minnedosa Man.
