Moon 6.41 serious problem for 54 big squeeze on Farmers May put Pinch on you police find family of elderly Man after three Days a taxi Driver brought the 88 year old ukrainian Man to the Rupert Avenue police station tuesday Midnight. He did t know where he wanted to go. He did t know where his Home was. He had come to the City to see a doctor he said. He had been in Hospital. His name was Michael Gregorry. Police phoned and phoned. Hospitals old age Homes even the provincial age pension Board. For three Days while the investigation went on the elderly Man was quartered in the police station Bull finally a son Steve was con at Arborg Man. His father had taken a Bur min Cha City to Pat o dweeb in the first nine months of 1953, Canada s far mers pocketed nearly billion in Cash for the Sale of their produce. This Cash income was the biggest Ever received our Farmers in such a period. You might think in View of this record that Farmers Are entering 1954 in a highly optimistic Frame of mind. But they Aren t. They re a mighty worried group. And the cause of their worry is a situation that adds up to one of Canada s biggest prob lems of 1954. It s a problem of vital in Terest to Farmers and City peo ple alike. For regardless of Canada s great Advance As an Industrial nation the Farmer is still one of our Basic figures. If he makes Money we All make Money. If he has it Tough we All feel the Pinch. This is particularly True in the Prairie West. What is this problem briefly it is this the Farmer is the victim of a squeeze. The prices of Arnost everything he Sells Are going Down and the prices of almost everything he buys Are staying up. If this problem in t solved if the squeeze gets tighter in Stead of easier then the Farmer and All of us could headed for trouble in fact the Only reason Why agriculture is still in a relatively prosperous state in spite of the squeeze is that it is much More efficient than it used to. If Farmers were faced with the same costs of production today As they were in the 1920 a Many of them would bankrupt. In 1936, a Farmer had to hire two stokers for every opera Ting Binder paying stokers w a Day and boarding them. In the 20 s it took a 16-Man Crew to keep a steam engine separator outfit rolling at a payroll of j125, daily at a threshing Cost of about 10 cents a Bushel for wheat. Added to that were the Cost of cutting and stocking the crop arid the huge Cost of feeding the threshing Crew with extra Kitchen help Tor the housewife. Today the self propelled Combine following the Swather has changed All that. The Combine operator and Grain trucker do what a big outfit did before and thresh for three or four cents a Bushel compared with 10 cents in the old Days. And remember 10 cents in the 20 s would go As far As about twice Libit amount now. So the comparison is really four cents As against 20 cents not four against 10. If in the last four the Farmer had. Been operating in the same free Wheeling costly Way he did in the Golden mid 20 she d broke As Flat now As the Straw on his Winter stubble Field. Yet his efficiency is a big Factor in storing up surplus grains now and shoving up this year s challenging problem. He faces lowering Selling prices _ partly because of declining world prices for bread grains. As the prices which Farmers get slide downwards their operating costs drop much More slowly if at All. This situation has prevailed since 1951, speeding up against the Farmer in 1952 and 1953. Between 1951 and september 1953, close to the average for last year farm prices skidded 61.4 Points. In the same period costs to Farmers for commodities and services went ahead 8.4 Points. These figures give an India Tion of the squeeze. There Are Only two ways it can eased. One is the Farmer getting higher prices for what he Sells and the other is for a further Cut to made somehow in his costs of production. Prairie farmkb8 must sell their big Cash crop wheat on a world Market. If they Are going to sell that wheat they must accept the Price the world Market will pay. In times of world surplus they cannot pass on their higher operating costs in the form of Hoffher prices. If they tried it. Their world customers would desert them. What about easing the squeeze the other alter a forecast continuing cold Price on Power project plan secret talks denied to revive scheme says Campbell Premier d. L. Campbell and mayor Garnet Coulter denied Friday that secret negotiations Are underway Between Winnipeg s City Council and the provincial May Nave ils Eye on Meyer As a Kurt Meyer May play key role for West in new German army Ottawa up a German War criminal Kurt Meyer to freed soon from a life term in prison May play a vital role in a new German army. He was highly regarded in the German army during the second world War and at 33 became its youngest government to revive plan live lowering production costs this in t going to easy. As stated the Farmer has already done an excellent Job of lowering his Cost of operation. Opportunities for him to make further reductions on his own Hook still exist but they Are narrowing. Any sizable reductions from Here on will depend largely on what is done non farm quarters such As Industry and government. If As a result of a concerted Effort All parties the farm production Cost is lowered then the Farmer can increase his production even at lower sell ing prices and still maintain the Strong position which he has built up in the last few years. Font ice Iii however mayor Coulter made Public a letter from the provincial government which asked the City to enter talks n a new Power Deal.
