Affair at Monte Carlo Leo Genn is surrounded by an eager group of tourists As he unfolds the tale within a tale that makes up the body of affair at Monte Carlo which opened at the Odeon theatre Friday i m afraid that the breathless go on do Tell us More attitude of the listeners is not quite Justi fied by the circumstances. Taken from Stefan Zweig s Story Twenty four hours in a woman s life affair at Monte Carlo is a leisurely yarn about a restless widow who Falls in love with an inveterate Gambler. Merle Ober on is the widow and Richard Todd is the Gambler. Oberon Todd Loving and gambling the Story is a great Deal like one of the yarns that Somerset Maug Ham tells in his Short stories. It lacks however the ironical touch that characterizes these stories and it is guilty spinning a slender thread beyond its modest proportions. Nevertheless there is a leisurely urbane air about it the per Lorances Are expert and the background of Monte Carlo is Cap tured in some Superb color photo Graphy. All three principals do Fine work and Richard Todd is particularly to be commended As a Young Man who does t think that Good looks absolves him of the necessity to act. The Story opens with a Young woman running away from the elderly Man she is to marry to the eager arms of a Youthful suitor. This prompts or. Genn who plays a novelist to Tell a group of people in a cafe an incident that took place when he was in Monte Carlo. Most of the rest of the film is an extended Flashback the Moyie Only returning to the cafe for ejaculations of do continue the Story from the tourists. Miss Oberon the widow con sents to go with or. Genn to the Casino. There she meets a Young Man or. Todd who has gambled away Money that he a s gained dishonestly. In befriending him she Falls in love with him and the Story progresses to a logical and rather touching ending. This slight Story is done in rather detached but engaging fashion but it is inclined to be too Talka Tive.
