Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - February 2, 1954, Winnipeg, Manitoba Page 16 Winnipeg free press. Tuesday february 2, 1954 canadians one win away from sweep Maurice Smith the withdrawal of the Winnipeg royals from the Mandak league thereby leaving the professional baseball Field in this City entirely open to the class c Northern league club which will operate at the new stadium seems to us to have been the Best thing that could have happened to the Diamond sport in Winnipeg. From where we sit we do not think there was room Lor two professional Ball clubs in Winnipeg. Had curly Haas and Bob Divens gone against their better judgment and decided to operate the royals for another season we Are certain that both they and the Northern league club would have lost Money. Winnipeg is a Good baseball town but two professional teams would probably have proved a costly venture for both parties messes. Divens and Haas were smart to pack it up while still on speaking terms with their Bank managers. We talked to Divens about his club deciding to Call it quits and Bob said he has done so without regret. After he shirt Osborne stadium won t be with us too Long anyway and 1 think we d have been throwing Good Money after As Divens tells it operating the royals was a headache in More ways than one with player personnel causing him the greatest worry. We can t go into the details As Divens told them but he must have had quite a problem on his hands. Anyway now that Winnipeg will have Only one pro club it will give the baseball fans of this City the Opportunity to prove whether or not we Are Ripe for triple a baseball. If the Northern league games receive Strong support at the Gate then the club owners will have a talking Point when and if the Opportunity arises to secure a franchise in the american association or some such league. Taking advantage of monday s mild weather we were out to take a look at the activity that s been going on All during the Winter at the new stadium. Terrific Progress has been made in the erection of the Concrete baseball stand which when completed will seat fans All behind Home plate. When it was first reported that baseball would invade the stadium we did t think the Park would lend itself to baseball. Now How Ever it looks to us As if it will be a very cosy spot to spend a summer evening. Now a resident of los Angeles our Scotty Harper s son Donald got a pleasant Surprise the other Day. In the com Pany of a Friend Donald went out to play a game of Golf at one the los Angeles courses. Hanging around the tee waiting to take his turn to Start Young Harper spotted a familiar figure. At first he could t believe his eyes. But sure enough it was Jack Jacobs who was in the company of Ralph Drewitt of Winnipeg. After chatting with Jacobs for a Little while the famed Blue bomber quarterback invited Harper and his Friend to join him in a foursome. Donald wrote to his father i m glad i met Jake because he helped me to Correct a bad accompanied by their wives Ken Watson Jack Hutchison Alistair Mcdiarmid and Earl Murray of the Neepawa Murray will leave wednesday morning by plane to Chicago to compete in the Chicago Curling club s invitational Bonspiel. While participating in the Hamilton Thistle club s Centennial last november. Ken Watson was issued a special invitation by a prominent member of Chicago Curling club to attend the Windy City Spiel. Edmonton eskimos Are going to find it extremely difficult to fill the shoes of Darrell Royal that genial Young Man who yesterday accepted the position As head coach of Mississippi state University. undoubtedly was one of the finest foot Ball coaches Ever to come to Canada. Being selected to take Over at Mississippi state gives a Good indication just How highly he ranked across the line. A bouquet by the Way is in order to the Edmonton foot Ball club who chose to tear up their three year contract with Royal and thereby allow him to move on to bigger things. Schmo key Siar Joe Zaleski who plays Best with a Cigar jabbed Between his Teeth will be passing out some of those stogies today. Joe became the father of a Fine baby girl at 4 . Today. The Young lady checked in at seven pounds eight ounces. Mother baby and Joe Are All doing Well. By at Hoofer in the old Days and they were Good Days indeed for Wal Ter Monson s monarchs Cana Diens could t beat Monarch for losing. One year As Winnipeg Ca Nadies the habs expended a whole season trying and failing. Those Days Are gone for says St. Boniface manager de Turner and with the new Deal for canadians came a new situation for the Manitoba Junior hockey league. When the saints beat monarchs 6-2 last night they came within one game of reversing the procedure exactly. Monarchs still Haven t beat canadians and they Are running out of chances. For time it appeared regals were primed to Over come a 3-0 deficit and go on to exciting comeback in the Monarch tradition. They Cut the Lead to 3-2 on two driving by tall Murray Couch who has come out of nowhere or South to Challenge Abble Mcdonald of St. Boniface for the scor ing lend. But St. Boniface steadied with the help of Mcdonald who also scored twice and trotted along to their 27th win in 32 tries. The saints have an abundance of what monarchs have a dearth of to take liberties with the tax and because the habs have the forwards to do it they scored goals freely. Canadians conformed to a time honoured script. They went ahead Early and stayed ahead late while contributing to the plot in the Middle stages with a Back court Sag. After Couch scored on de Fence Man Ralph Lyndon s pass in the third period monarchs took advantage of Loose net front play by the opposition and had Barry Mcqueen net up in front with the tying Marker on his stick. Mcqueen caught the rebound of Don Mcgregor s shot and had Gordon Dibley fright Kelly alone. Goalie Dib Ley giving Don Dawson a rest did the same for Mcqueen who went to the Bench a saddened athlete after Disley stopped his Cru Cial shot. One other time monarchs had an Opportunity to pull even. Butch Wozniak was unattended in front with the puck at hand. He made an improbable move at tempting to pass off to Gary Aid Corn who was slightly closer but not. So much that it mattered. Having come that close to los ing their grip canadians took themselves firmly in hand Barry Thorndycraft a High scorer and Bill Sutherland another High scorer joined in a goal Mouth Exchange and Thorndycraft scored. Mcdonald got his second have to concentrate on Boston Patrick figures rangers headed for nil playoffs by Bex York a club is clicking and i think we have a Good Chance of making the play that was the opinion expressed monday by Murray Buzz Pat Klohn fires 32 Points As cadets beat Nymha George Klohn made life miser Able for Harvey Lipkin s Nymha blues last night at the Nymha As he led his Winnipeg Light in Fantry mates to a 72-46 Junior basketball league Triumph. Klohn notched a fat 32 Points to sabotage a vastly improved Effort by the Tail end blues. His efforts placed him 36 Points ahead of Maxwell King whirl Nway s Jim Wright in the race Lor individual scoring honors. Blues held the Domino Cham Pion cadets to a slim 14-11 Quarter time Lead and trailed Only 29-21 at the half. In the second half things went from bad to worse and the cadets villed steadily away. Mitch Czaja and Ross my Kairae with 13 and 10 Points respectively played Strong tames for Hal Mauthe s sol Diers Amone the forwards. English Cary Middlecoff Veteran pro does his Bett to make that 25-footer drop on the fourth Hole during the thunderbird invitational Golf tournament. The putt How. Ever rimmed the cup and too Many other of Middlecoff s shots met with the same Fate As Freddy Haas went on to win top Money in the talks much says Little bosons andies need a win varsity bosons and St. Andrews will be desperately in need of senior Basket Ball victories tonight at Sargent Park school but will have to overcome some pretty formidable opposition to get them. The clubs Are currently tips for the fourth and final playoff berth As the schedule comes into the Home stretch. To gain their Victory St. Andrews need do nothing less than topple mighty Paulins while by sons must topple second place King s Best. St Andrews and Paulins get the Ball rolling at . While King s Best and bosons meet in the 9 . Fixture. Rick coach of the new York ran Gers. Having seen every National hockey league club in action since he took Over the Ranger reins three weeks ago Patrick now has his own ideas on his team s attempt to qualify for a Stanley cup berth. We re taking every game As it comes and not worrying about the monarchs every play. The other teams can Lake More shots than we do but if they can t come in close to the goal the chances Are they re not going to Mura also singled out Centre Paul Ronty and right Winger Wally Herros Heimer Lor their Fine play. Ronty has been doing Fine the wings and Elueline coming up with an occasional goal. From Bert Aikens and Leo Konyk. Thornf Rycraft got his second too until it was disallowed for hav ing arrived late or after the puck was out of at there was action on touts. Bob Jasson of canadians scored and Gary Starr of monarchs who has been receiving close and in gentle attention of late got mad. Object of his Wrath was Al Johnson who had been needling him about the time of defence Man Jasson s score. Starr took after John son and could t be pacified with the result that he and Johnson received Misc on ducts. Besides Mcdonald with two Thorndycraft Jesson Eddie swoosh Dudych and Bill Suth Erland scored for St. Boniface j Bruce Carmichael Dudych and Konyk had two assists Suther land Aikens and Frank Holli Day one each. Couch s first Monarch goal when he returned his own Back Board rebound originated with Lloyd Orris his constant play maker. Briefly misconduct continued to fall freely to Bill Short and in Hanson of St. Boni Faco Stan and Dennis Murray of Jasson played a Strong game for the saints Don Mcgregor for the others Lydon and Ted Harris also showed to advantage on the Monarch Elueline Lyndon buckled Johnson with the stiffest Check of Long he said. Sure we Herby of course is our big gun. The night have to concentrate on Chat s the team we have to beat out for fourth place. But every one counts the Brums coached by Buzz s brother Lynn Patrick blanked Toronto Maple Leafs 2-0 sunday night and moved three Points ahead of the new yorkers. Each team has 21 games left to play. The recent Ranger surge Dur ing which they be won nine of 13 a Victory at Montreal for the first time in foul brought them from nine Points behind the brains to their current contending position. I Patrick attributes i he club s Suc Icess to several factors but Calls the play of dete Cemen Harry Howell and Jack Evans a real i these two Are playing like vet Erans. They Are forcing the Puppos ing forwards to shoot from impossible angles by Riding them out of he comes through with those important several games he s had another reason for optimism.
