Moon sets forecast continuing mild red police squelch East German unrest speedy series of arrests nips revolt in Bud Berlin a simmering unrest in the soviet zone has been thoroughly quelled by action of the communist secret police German and Western quarters said monday. A series of arrests of upwards of 500 Ger mans in scattered Industrial areas has apparently smashed any budding outbreak of violent resistance before it had a Chance to get started. Western informants said Eastern police have demonstrated what soviet foreign minister v. M. Molotov quietly forecast in the big four Parley that another june 17 revolt is impossible. Unrest provoked the unrest reported reliably from Dresden Gera Merseburg 0 e 1 s n i t z and other communities last week was provoked by the communists themselves. Their agitators stirred up resent Ful German workers by try ing to Force them to sign resolutions favouring the Molotov plan for National a plan that would Cement red Rule for All Germany. As soon As the grumbling broke into the open police squads struck hauled off the loudest anti reds and effectively squelched any incipient revolt. Any grumbling still going on is out of the Side of the Mouth and in whispers. Major Industrial plants in the East Are Honey combed with police agents and in formers. Quick results Allied officials said the crackdown was so Quick and produced such immediate results that it was not even necessary to increase nor Mal guard details at Many plants. Rumours that the russian army had been called in to Brace for an uprising were disproved by All competent sources. Outside of sentries at the soviet embassy armed russian sol Diers have not been seen in East Berlin since the big four Parley started. Reports that red army tanks had moved toward Berlin brought scoffing from Western military quarters which said the russians built a big tank shed at Karls Horst in East Berlin last summer and keep a tank Reserve there of All times. An exclusive series on Russia today soviet slaves in revolt people from All walks of life that Contact we always sought for but found impossible to attain while in the message this students movement wanted to bring to the russian people they called the True word of in their View the socialist state of the future would he run by either one or several parties but purely by workers and peasants this program had been worked out in Small secret circles meeting at night behind locked doors. It had been born from a desperate rejection of the alternatives of the system of stalinist oligarchy on the one hand and of Western Bourgeois demo Cracy on the other. An answer to pessimism the whole movement is said to have started in 1948 from a discussion Between five Moscow students on the Long banned ?.ns Pasternak which this great russian writer of the 20s had developed the idea that spiritual Freedom was incompatible with social Justice. Their system was As an answer to this pessimism a Way of making room for spiritual Freedom in a collectivist society by decentralization of state Power until the stale could finally be replaced altogether by the workers and peasants in this magic Mountain 50 women Knelt in the Middle of the floor praying aloud. Resistance grows against Iron fist of Kremlin gang by Brigitte Cerland special owns As we left the prison train at Vor Kuta the Metropolis of Arctic rus Sia and one of the strangest cities in the world i saw nothing but an endless Plain glittering in bluish White. Here half a million political prisoners were sup posed to live but where i looked around Snow nothing but Snow. And every few Steps a strange wooden Box resting High up on four Strong pillars with Bear like beings leaning from their win Dows the guards wrapped in their thick furs. Only those Tishky watch towers showed that we were passing a Camp one of 60 which make up for the Fence and huts were deeply embedded in the White Vas Thoss indistinguishable from accidental Snow heaps. Hore and there towers Rose dark against this background most if them close to ugly shaped Hills. They turned out to be the Coal heaps of the 50 pits for the Sake of which Vor Kuta had called into existence. Mountain of no return we stopped in front of a Wall of Snow. It opened and i Felt i was entering the magic Mountain from which there is no return. Suddenly Light hit me then warmth and a confusion of voices. For the first time. I entered a hut of the penal and regime lager my eyes hit first on some 50 women in Black clothes and kerchiefs who were kneeling in the Middle of the floor praying aloud. Next the e was a group of Young girls in colourfully embroidered ukrainian blouses sitting on High clean peasant Beds whose melancholy singing now and then drowned the ecstatic prayer. A Little apart from it All there was a group of Young men and women engaged in passionate debate who looked As if 1he hand of some giant had picked them up in a West european cafe to drop them in this hut of a soviet labor Camp. I saw at once that each of these three groups formed a world apart. Later i found that each represented a different Type of movement opposed to the soviet Power. Before 1948, the year of the great Reform in the soviet penal Camp system they would have been separated and individually divided up among the thousands of Camps in the vast regions of Siberia and Central Asia. There they would have perished by starvation or by the terrorism of the criminals who then formed the Camp aristocracy. In 1.948, the ministry of state Security began to sort out part of the prisoners sentenced for political offences who were supposed to need stronger guards and stricter isolation because they were dangerous to the state and to put them into special re lager regime at last a Chance to meet the result of this was the creation of entire regions in which the political opponents of the regime were concentrated and at last got a Chance to meet one another. The intellectuals whose debating Zeal had so struck me at first sight were students from Moscow Leningrad Kiev or Odessa. Outstanding among were the children of the generation of 37." their parents once leading figures in party army and government had fallen victims to Stalin s great purge. They themselves had been educated in state orphanages and had managed to fight their Way to the universities Only by endless efforts and tricks. Now these would be philosophers historians or economists sat Camp with 25 years of forced labor As their Only and they seemed perfectly Content with their Fate not that they were broken or resigned. On the contrary. Last we Are i can still hear them say. At last we can talk to everybody who wants to listen about our pro tests and our search for a Way out. At last we find Contact with arrests Here and there it took the spies of the Howard Wood sr., Veteran Winnipeg curler who it competing in his 47th consecutive . Bonspiel. In 1950 they struck. Several Hundred were accused of Ter in thcompirac3r a trial sent to far north6 to the Abor Camps the the in the Paypal Camps gave to sized arts Viv the students and to their hunger for Organ Snow or carrying bricks for 12 or even 14 hours a deadly Energy after years of struggle the maps proved that resistance possible inside big 4 try closed door sessions Berlin Cap the big foil foreign ministers moved to Day to Berlin s West Side trying in closed door session to solve some of the world problems Settle in open debate. Molotov at the big four foreign ministers conference in Berlin this week to woo great Britain and France away from the United states. Even Wishful thinkers among British officials politicians and newspapermen Are now being forced to conclude that Russia never intended to surrender East Germany and that or. Molotov came to the Berlin conference not to negotiate a German settlement. The third week of the con Ference May confirm that his Only was to barter peace in indo China for France and tons of Trade for Britain in Exchange for their surrender of plans to create a european army and a stronger Western defence organization.
