Winnipeg Fres press tuesday june 22, 1954 top secret satellite May be in the works f should not Surprise readers of this column to hear a news Flash announce one of these Days. A miniature satellite has been established in the sky. This writer docs not claim to have any Clas is Wied information about such a satellite. Rather he making a scientific guess that somewhere scientists been working on a project As hush As was the manhat x ten years ago such a would have been Bright out of the pages of science fiction. But ten years ago science fiction also discussing a super which would weigh tons and Fly faster than sound. Today that bomber is in and a Success Ful satellite could weigh and Cost no More s look Over the guess. Ing about the satellite by first considering that super bomber. It s the b-52, powered by eight jets weighing pounds Able to Fly faster than sound. Wing Span is 185 feet length 153 feet with a rudder taller than a like Story building. How is this linked to space tra a Fol the answer is simple. Aero nautical engineers Are being taught to think big. Years ago the b-1t and b-24, weighing pounds were the biggest in the world. Ten years ago this new bomber in someone s today it is reality. This bomber is far bigger than anything needed to put a satellite in the sky. The minature satellite Beacon proposed by this writer last year weighed 15 tons. Put this mini Beacon in the sky available rockets v and Aero bees could form first and second propelling stages. The third Iso Pound stage could be engineered and constructed to set a ten Pound pay Gad circling the Earth to the b-52 Fot monster. Its 300.0no-Poimd special offer weight is at least ten times that of the mini Multi stage rocket. In other words we have air borne vehicles in operation to Day which surpass in size and weight anything needed to begin space travel. Also of extreme importance is the Money involved in building this giant bomber. Its Cost has been variously estimated from 6.5 to 21 million dollars perhaps both figures a i right the lower one a production figure and the higher represent ing the initial Cost of the first machine made. However since the b-36 s Are supposed to Cost three million dollars chances Are that the biggest bomber might Cost close Tolo million dollars. A Siim this size could under write the development and construction costs of the savings such a Beacon wll make possible will More than pay off the initial Cost of the project and will also show that a future full space station project is feasible. The next step after mini will be an unmanned rocket ship which could put an object of appreciable weight and size in t h e sky. Krafft Ehricke of the Bell air Craft company has proposed three vehicles which can be put into the sky. One is a manned space ship weighing about 1.3 million pounds and carrying a Crew of five. One is a ferry rocket which will act As a Supply ship and put a payload of pounds in the sky last is a smaller Supply ship which will put a one ton pay Load in the sky. The weight of the smaller sup ply ship is pounds considerably less than the weight of the b-52 the fuel contemplated is nitric acid and hydrazine both in use today. From this it is seen that de signs Are available today for put Ting sizeable objects into the sky and these designs do not contemplate an object As big As the fully loaded br52. Those who Are overawed by thoughts of the big Multi stage rocket ships necessary to blast objects into the sky need Only look at pictures of the new planes to reassure themselves that rockets Are not so fantastic As some would have us think.
