Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 16, 1954, Winnipeg, Manitoba Page 13 pee press Friday july 16, 1954 Fine hurling pushes Gold eyes Over .5 Paratte sincerity is in every breath when Walter Piggy Barnes talks football. The assistant line coach of the Blue bombers is head Over heels in love with the game which provides his bread and butter. Sitting Back relaxed in the room which he will Call Home Dur ing his stay in Winnipeg Barnes last night was a Man thoroughly Content with life. After All football is his life and he s up to his ears in it. As far As Walt is concerned it has always been football. Said Barnes is a wonderful sport. Either playing in it. Or coaching it is just like being in a championship chess it s not like soccer another or refit team game. In soccer players Are spread out Over the Field and a fellow quite a Lew Yards from the play can make a mistake and still the play will go a but in football it s 12 men against twelve. They re grouped in a relatively Small space. Everyone has a Job and that Job must be done or the play will be a failure. There is no margin for error. The satisfaction that comes from seeing a play run Success fully is hard to explain. But it feels Barnes has been mixed up with football a Long time. At-36, he is trying a new venture Canadian football. But he s not worried about the future at a a. The future of football is in maintains Barnes. The recent to Deal made that absolutely certain. Csc Abc to will carry big four games to All parts of the United states this fall i Don t believe the Deal is As much a break for Canadian football however As it is for the United states football Canadian football from what i be seen is a great game. It will have All of the United states talking about it this fall. Mark my words there May be some knockers but they la be out talked by enthusiastic it has to be that Way. Canadian football has too Many Good features such As the Large end zone no time through his enthusiasm it is easy to see Barnes did t have to be coaxed to come to Canada by bomber head coach Ai Sherman. He left a Good Job to come Here. After Sherman contacted him Walt told Columbia University coach Lou Little he wanted to get into the professional coaching Field and this was his Bifi Opportunity. Little did t try to hold him Back even though he had been on the Columbia lot a few years. All West Virginia born footballers Barnes is a big Man. Another West virginian on the Bombere squad is tackle Dick Huffman. Strangely enough the pair could be twins they look so much alike. In fact Back in school Days Huffman was almost refused admittance to a shot putting event in an intercollegiate Field meet. Seems the officials thought Dick was Walter. Barnes had graduated from the University of Tennessee a couple of years before Dick reached the school and the official who had seen Barnes compete thought he was Back for a Post graduate try and tried to declare Huffman ineligible. A Good Nai Rod gent Walt does t mind when folks Call him by his Nick name he came by the name honestly As it were. A Ashen Walt was a youngster his family had a big reunion. All the kids were having a great time. One of the family had brought along a greased pig to pro vide a Little excitement. Walt took a liking to the porker. When no one was looking he somehow managed to pick it up and head stealthily Down the Railroad tracks. But he was spot Ted. Some of his cousins took Chase and eventually caught him. It was a Beautiful flying tackle typical of Many which he him Telf was to make in later years which brought him Down. Unfortunately the pig was under the pile. It was injured and had to be destroyed. But Walt s Kinfolk never let him forget the incident. Any family correspondence always included a sentence which asked about the eventually it became it s been Piggy Ever since. Pick1x up yardage Sherman opened practice with neat piece of psychology last night before sending his Back fielders into action he got them the right Frame mind by telling them a humorous Story after the Story however every thing was strictly business and it stayed that Way for More than by Ted bowies a pair of Ultra Superb pitching performances gave Winnipeg old eyes. Their seventh and eighth the four innings he worked be consecutive victories thursday fore disaster struck. In the fifth two of the three hits Gold eyes got off him in the first four frames. He struck out two men in each of he got the first Man to ily out. Then he walked one but appeared out of trouble when he chalked up his ninth strikeout. But night at Winnipeg stadium. hurled a Fine five litter As Gold eyes stopped grand Forks chiefs 5-0 in the opener of the double header while John Spiller topped Spencer s chore by giving chiefs Only four hits As Gold eyes won the second. 4-0. It was Spiller s third win in four Days. The double win moved Gold eyes into sole Possession of fourth place half a game ahead of Superior blues they Are a game and a half out of third place. Tonight at the stadium Gold eyes will probably have Elroy Joyce on the Mound for a single game against the chiefs. Joyce is a recent addition to the club after being released by Duluth it Wilt be his first appearance in a Avin Niper uniform. Grand Forks will be out to break a string of run less inn Ings that now stand at 17. It was definitely a night for pitchers last night. And strangely enough the Best looking hurler of the Bunch was Gene Fedak of grand Forks who started the Sec Ond game Only to fall victim to his own wildness and suffer the loss. Fedak started As if lie meant to take care of the situation single handed. In the fourth he weakened Only slightly giving up Ler s record is eight and seven. There were a couple of Fielding gems in the second contest. Luberto pulled off the first when he went High to grab rip major s line drive while Relief Pitcher de Gerkin who replaced Fedak also made a smart play on a hard ground bail to end Winnipeg s two More walks loaded the inning and when Howard o Flynn sing i Glenn Young is playing great led in came a pair. Then Glenn Ball at second for Gold eyes. He Young walked to ire Load the j has handled 16 putouts and 14 As sacks and Rocky Brown drove in two More with a single. That was All for Fedak. But where Fedak was working hard and striking out batters left and right Spencer and Spiller were pacing themselves nicely. In no inning did either hurler allow chiefs More than one hit All the hits garnered off Spencer were singles. A pair of smart double plays further aided Spencer in getting out of minor scrapes. Gold eyes were showing a semblance Power which they had t displayed insists since Gold eyes returned Home without any sign of a Cue. Gold eyes one error in the two games last night. It came in the first game to snap their errorless games at three. They promptly started a new string in the second contest. The error was a Tough Luck one. It came on a foul pop up. Al mor Ris nipped Over from third to take it but in worrying about running into the Fence dropped the Ball. Spencer promptly struck the Bat Ter out but according to the recent contests they got the error Sticks ight of their hits in the first a it four innings to pile up All five of their runs. Included in the hits were Home runs by Gerry Dahms and Bill Silverthorne both in the fourth inning a pair of pokes which put the game beyond doubt. An error a double by Rocky Brown a walk and a single by la Luberto got Winnipeg their first rim in the second inning. In the third inning three successive singles plated one run or Winnipeg and when Pat o Keefe stole Home the crowd of 3.3s4 pics ent Home stand Gold eyes have played to patrons an a _ rage of per game. This kind of attendance is what is needed to get Winnipeg a team of higher classification.
