Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - September 13, 1954, Winnipeg, Manitoba Page 13 Winnipeg free press monday september Frank and Friendly talk Attlee tries to convince Mao after debate red China s Mao tse Tung former British prime minister Clement Attlee came out neither Victor nor vanquished. It was a rank and Friendly discussion with neither Side giving Way or. Attlee writes in this last article in the series of five on his tour behind the Iron curtain. By it. Hox. Clement Attlee Sydney after visit to the Industrial North East of China we returned to piping to stay for a few Days. Despite the noise of motor horns 1 found it pleasant to be Back in the City. Although we had already visited the forbidden City with its Parks and temples and also the Temple of Hea Ven there were still beauties unrevealed. This we Learned when we entered through a lofty Gate in a great red Wall and found ourselves driving around a Lake to visit Mao tse Tung at his House. This had been the Palace of the old Empress thu and on an Island in the Lake was the place where she had kept imprisoned her Stepson. The i or emperor at the beginning of the present Century. We enjoyed a three hour talk with Mao tse Tung and his chief colleagues. The talk was Frank on both sides. He explained the Aims and methods of the people s government while we tried to enlighten him on the views of the labor party Ancu of British democracy. Time discussion was i but quite Friendly. Toward the end of the meeting we Werc talking of the Way to achieve peace. The chinese expressed the View that the United states was aggressive and was seeking to by Lri up a ring of subordinate states from Japan to indo China. Whereupon i said As Russia has done in eur we assured him that the americans were a peace Loving people. He suggested four Points whereby he considered the might assist in promoting world peace. These Points which included the evacuation of Formosa the withdrawal of the Amer ican Fleet from those Waters and the cessation of any attempt to Germany have been made Public and some organs of the press seem to have suggested that we agreed with them and left it at that. In fact it was suggested by the Chin Ese that these were Points which we might try to get our american friends to agree to. Two Way traffic i pointed out that a two Way traffic was needed and that they might propose to their russian friends the giving of Complete Freedom to All the satellite states to choose their own govern ments the reduction of armaments in the most heavily armed state in the world Russia and the cessation of russian inspired activities in other countries. This Exchange was part of a general debate in which we on our Side tried to show the chinese the other Side 1o questions on which they seemed Only to appreciate the russian Point of View. On various " one tended to get the Stock communist answer. For ins Tance on the Standard of life they maintained that our Superior Standard was due to our. Exploitation of the Colo Nies. When 1 asked them to explain How Denmark swe Den and Norway were also High in the scale though they had no colonies they could not answer. It was indeed disturbing to hear their views on this question of Stan Dards which 1 had tried to relate to the balance be Tsven population and re sources. The attitude of the Chin Ese government on the ques Tion of population appeared to be that increase of popu lation was in itself a Good thins. They estimated an increase of a year and when questioned in the pressure of population on the Means of subsistence they said there was still much undeveloped land. When it was pointed out that this was a Short term answer and when the exp this King size 656 Pound Blu Fin was one of three taken by mexican anglers in the International tuna cup match at Wedgeport Nova Scotia. The mexican team defending champions was a close second to the leading . Anglers going info final Day. Commonwealth link London Reuters preparations Are being made to build radio stations at Vancouver to supplement Pacific cables which link London with Australia and new zealand through Canada. This was revealed in the third annual report of the common wealth telecommunications Board published Here sunday. Rienche of other nations India for instance was quoted they said that what was required was More productivity. When it was suggested that the important thing was the relationship Between production and the number of Consumers and that what was desirable was a higher Standard of life they could give no effective except to say that China regarded a Large population As desirable As tending to in crease production of commodities. No Rural restraint they seemed to think that some restraint was pos sible in the towns but not in the country. It was admitted that Rural housing would need decades to bring it up to the Standard of the towns. Yet this Standard from our Point of View is deplorable Low. The world is faced there fore with a government that is prepared to see its popu i lation of increase to or in the next two decades. Not Only is there no policy of restraint but there is actual encouragement toward in tense fruitfulness. I thing that the real Rea son for this is that China being admittedly a backward country Hopes to make up in Quantity what it lacks in Quality in order to achieve a position of Power in the world. This is a disturbing thought. I found Mao tse Tung an impressive character with a quiet strength which one would expect to find in a Man of his achieve ments. He pointed out that there were colleagues of his present during our meeting who were not communists and some need who had formerly been connected with other regimes. Except for Premier foreign minis Ter Chou in Lai however i i did not get a very Clear impression of the other Lead ers though i gathered that some Are thought to be More rigid followers of Marx Lenin Stalin than others special visits in the course of our stay various special visits were made by my colleagues. Two of them visited a prison others had talks on Trade. Regarding the latter i do not think that one can expect a great development. Or. Edith Summerskill and Aneurin to Van looked into the health situation. Along with me others visited the univer sity. It is right to say that we moved about freely and that i know of no instance where we were denied any Access which we desired. But of course it is not possible in a Short visit to look beneath the surface. I do not know if there is As in , communist trips an elaborate system of spying and a ubiquitous secret police. I make no pre tense of having exhaustive knowledge of the chinese people s Republic but i doubt whether Many of those who give confident judgments in newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic really know very much More.
