Investigations made by the Royal Cana Dian air Force. The analysis of t-33 accidents in the West continues to show a wide variety of circumstances and runs Simi Lar to that encountered on equivalent types of flying both in the Craf and in other air a spokes Man for the Craf told the Winnipeg free press in an exclusive interview. Wherever the Root cause can be traced to some aspect train ing supervision or operation or to the aircraft itself prompt action is taken to eliminate the possibility of recurrence insofar As possible. This is a continuous the spokesman a top ranking officer at air Force head quarters said. According to records kept by the free press there have been at least 19 crashes of Craf places in Manitoba since april of ast year. Of these 15 have involved t-33 Jet trainers. Twenty men have been killed 13 of them in t-33 trainers. The Large num Ber of accidents prompted the free press to seek an explanation from the Craf and to de Termine what action was being taken to prevent accidents continuing in such numbers in the future at Western stations. The writer was assigned to put series of key questions to the Mir Force authorities. The Craf had the questions Uncle consideration for three weeks. They were passed to the various divisions concerned and answers prepared. The answers have been studied by High rank ing officers in the air Force and discussed with the writer in de Tail. The answers have been cleared for Security purposes and axe herewith published together with the questions that were asked. The Craf Headquarters spokes Man who must remain unidentified in accordance with the policy of anonymity which is followed by the air Force in such cases has explained that Pilot errors Cove r Lan almost infinite Field eve by Effort is made in the training provided Craf person Nel to prepare the Pilot to meet effectively All types of situation. The spokesman speaking for Craf Headquarters pointed out it was difficult in replying to specific questions to explain All the ramifications which affect the problem of aircraft accidents and the policy of the air Force in dealing Vith them. The questions and answers Are As follows question no. 1 in View of the number of t-33 training crashes does the Craf believe the preliminary training before going on jets is sufficient is there enough training to make pilots actions automatic in Case of a flame out or other faulty mechanism a Svrek the Craf maintains its training syllabus under constant review in the Light of experience in the Field. The training Given to pilots prior to Jet conversion is c o n s i d e r e d thoroughly sound and the practices of other major air forces closely parallel the Craf training concept. The procedures Are not of course identical be cause the training aircraft employed Are not always the same. . As regards the question o t automatic reaction in the Case of emergency it must be remembered that no two Emer . The aim of training is therefore produce Speed accuracy and correctness of reactions rather than automatic Ity. Great stress is. Much More extensive preparatory train ing than Given in the War time its. Flying training school in which the Basic training is carried out on the Harvard aircraft and brings the Pupil in one stage to a Standard equivalent o. 5 August Craf officials said most crashes were due to Pilot errors. On the other hand every Effort is made to prepare the Pilot to meet effectively All types of continuous attention to. Flying which he will this purpose Are covered in detail Here again it might be emphasized that Craf methods and proce dures have not been Deve loped in a vacuum but Are similar and the result of continuous Liaison and discus Sion with other air forces. Certainly it has not be he found As a contributory cause in air Force Accident investigations All training is directed toward teaching Calm judgment and self control in emergencies and individuals who Jet to unreasoning fear or to Lack of controlled response when faced with a difficult situation Are among the first to be weeded out As unsuitable. The Overall Accident rate for t-33 aircraft in the Craf is very similar to that for the Harvard. However the exposure to Hazard in a High performance aircraft is inevitably higher than in.
