Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 30, 1955, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press .30, 195.5 Page 17 de dog wins world boxing title since Early in the season officials of the Manitoba Golf association and the Man Oba professional golfers association had hinted there would be. A change in the operation of this year s Manitoba open Golf tournament. Rumours naturally drifted around but both organizations kept mum. That is they kept mum until and what an announcement it was when it finally came. The fact that we Are to have a tournament Here this year should make everyone the golfer and the fan sit up and take notice. It ranks Manitoba Well up in the running for Only . Has a larger provincial event in a y of prize Money. The announcement was Well Worth waiting for and we re sure that every golfer and fan in the province will be looking Forward to seeing. Some of the top players in action at Nia Kwa sept. 9 and 10. We suspect however that the. Mega and the Mega a method in their madness in the Wuy they handled the important announcement. They invited the press and radio Gancer out to Nia Kwa for a luncheon tuesday then slyly suf crested that we might play a round of Golf after we finished eating. Our suspicion is that the two groups wanted to show the press radio types that the Nia Kwa course certainly won t be a push Over. Most of us managed to find out that there can be trouble on the course we had our share on the 13th and after making the our we think the organizers of the open can be sure that players with Good scores will get full credit for their efforts. Seriously though it was t necessary to show us Dumers that Nia Kwa is a Tough nut to crack. It was proven in 1952 when Pat Fletcher won the Cpgar title there with i score 210. Sure this is six under Par but just think that in that same summer the Canadian open was won by a 25-under-Par 263 at the St. Charles course. This was an extraordinary Effort by Johnny Palmer the Badin. . Smoothie but it does show a difference. If further proof is needed look what happened in the big Gerhard Kennedy open at Nia Kwa in 1046. Sen Hogan the greatest of the great took that one with a 72-Hole score of 231, Only seven strokes below Par. Based on these past performances we look for a score in the neighbourhood of 210 to win the 54-Hole open Here in september. The most Point about this Unher god open is the amount by which it has been enlarged. A year Nso. The Manitoba open was Worth a total of s225, with Goins to the top pro. This year it s Worth a total of with to the Winner. That s quite a jump. How did it come about you must give the credit to Pur local professional golfers. The Mega has made this bigger and better open possible through the publication of the first Issue of the Manitoba golfers this Magazine will raise the funds necessary to conduct the big event. And the Magazine appears Des tined now to become an annual publication thus assuring an open As Large if not larger in future years. Let s doff our Caps to the local pros for their Fine work. There s Only one thing we d like to see changed in the future. Now that we re in the Bis Money class now about changing the Manitoba open to a 72-Hole and would t it be great if we could finish a 72-Hole grind on a sunday Here n Tii Kre the ladies take Over the spotlight again next week with the Junior girls two Day tournament set for Mon Day and tuesday at Southwood and Elmhurst for the past few reasons the Young ladies tit Lemias been a Battle Between Marlene Wach and Ruth Thorvaldson. But both Are out of the class now and a new Junior Champ is assured strictly on last years play Well pick Carolyn Cameron to Lead the Way with Donna Patton giving a Good Chase. Noticed this week that our Bill Ezinicki the former nil Star who turned Golf pro did All right by himself in the Vermont open Bill joined another Massachusets pro in setting a course record of 63 six under Par in the first round then followed with a Par 63 in the second half to take second prize in the event Skee Segal the Fruy who quits Golf and starts again More times in a season than most of us do in a lifetime appears to be Back in the game he claims he has reached Experiment no. And i have finally discovered the great secret. When the Amateur Rolls around look for the Bis rest upset in Manitoba Rolf bigger even than Fleck s Conquest of Okay Skee we re waiting for the Amateur but Are you making of the Manitoba Amateur it won t be Long before we re into the swing of it two weeks from yesterday july 13 is opening Day for the four Day event at Elmhurst better get Wallace Bud Smith by Jesse Abramson Boston Nyht Wallace Bud Smith Cincinnati son of a piano tuner played such a Sweet Melody with his left hand on the face of Jimmy Carter of new York that he ended his concert with the world lightweight title in his Possession in the Garden wednesday night. The despised 4 to 1 underdog challenger supposedly a Courtesy opponent to give Carter a title fight he needed under the six month Rule parlayed a slashing ceaseless attack with a sturdy Chin and gobs of stamina to earn the decision in a bloody fifteen round Battle. It was a Clear Cut decision though a fractured one As the erratic Boston officials scored it playing with big numbers under the Massachusetts 10-Point scor ing system. The beaten Champion got a vote 144 Points to.143, from John Glynn who got an ear blistering chorus of Boos from the Small crowd of who paid at the Gate. The other judge put Smith on top 145 to 144. But the re Feree Mel Manning covered with the Gore that poured from Carter s left Eye from the fourth round and from Smith s left Eye from the eleventh round saved the night for the intrepid Chal yank challengers falter red sox continue Streak giving him the the title 147 to Chicago White sox and Cleve land indians main threats to new York s bid for a return to Ameri can league supremacy tumbled farther off the Pace As both lost wednesday while first place Yan Kees swept two from last place Baltimore orioles. His steadiness and Resolution and his Brilliant left hand attack kept him in control of the bitter action most of the Way after he got off behind. He won As a Champion by rally ing strongly Down the stretch of his first 15-round route going Effort after Carter swinging with his heavier artillery had caught and passed Smith in the ninth round and apparently had him set up for a knockout. There were no knockdowns Only two slips and wrestling Falls Wlinich put Smith on the floor once with a spread Eagle split in Carter s water drenched Cor Ner in the eleventh again in the fifteenth. The astounding upset of the 31 year old Carter added another chapter to the inconsistent career of the Only Boxer in ring history who has won the same title three times. Now he has lost the storied lightweight Crown for the third time. He lost it on a sweltering night in his eleventh title fight his eighth As a defender and in his first defence of his third reign.
