Brotman said sections 499 Canada in diminished form Canadian chamber of Commerce represented in adequate delegates thursday gave a stand ing ovation to a Winnipeg Ger s eloquent attempt to describe for them the spirit of the City in which they have this week held their 26th annual meeting. Or Justice Samuel Freedman of the Manitoba court of Queen s Bench ended the official program of the conference with an address on the spirit of Winnipeg Atna civic luncheon. He said the City s spirit was compounded of Many ingredients most important of which were internationalism tolerance a dedication to democratic values and a Faith in the future. Broader Outlook i like to think that Winnipeg s Outlook is not narrow but Broad and International in he said. I do not think there is antagonism Between loyalty to a City a province a country and an International organization. In fact civic loyalty is useful in training us in a capacity for some of these wider Winnipeg s external Trade bound it to the outside world its diverse groups helped to forge ties of Mem Ory and interest with the outside world. This attitude is symbolic of the Winnipeg spirit and we can do nothing but applaud it and Hope for its he said. Our optimism this City s Faith in the future de Rived from Many different factors from the past from the knowledge that the City had come through Many Vicissitudes including two great wars Anu a depression. I sometimes think that the East never As fully appreciated the Grimness of that depression As did the he said. The City s optimism derived from the things that were around us from the Grain a Exchange and the Winnipeg Ballet the music festivals and the great railway Yards the industries and the news 0apers Alert always to the de Fence of from Portage Avenue and the hospitals the City Hydro and the Blue bombers fighting Back the chamber of Commerce and the Trade unions the old fort Garry Gate bring ing a link with the past and from the Golden boy surveying the pre sent from the individuals of Winnipeg each doing his own individual task yet All co operating for common ends when the Call is it a somewhat romantic Pic Ture i confess it probably is. But As Browning said a Man s reach should exceed his grasp or what s a heaven for if there has been an element of romantic overstate ment i like to believe the essence of this spirit does exist and has been fairly described. I think we should cherish extend and improve that spirit and hand it Down As a heritage for those who follow which can never constitute a form Ula for acquisition of material wealth by which i like to believe does constitute a certain imperishable treasure of its Industry told universities need Aid to train workers ser has been Winnipeg s great Good Fortune to have As leaders men of the Long View and Broad or. Justice Freedman said. I will mention Only one Here the late John w. Dafoe editor of the Winnipeg free press a Man who looked out of his window and saw the world who cherished the City in which he lived but always espoused the broader View in a real sense one of the architects of Canadian nationhood who All his life Laboured for world peace erected on a foundation of collective Canada was a nation of minorities each bringing something of its own cultural heritage to the common Treasury of Canadian citizenship. In diminished form i am not sure that the Ideal of making Canada a nation Toler ant of everything except intolerance itself has been attained. But Winnipeg with its diversity of population is Canada in diminished form. What we need is co operation with the individual in the Concrete and not merely a love of humanity in the abstract. We want a willingness to reject the dislike of the unlike and i think it is accomplished to a remarkable degree in this to.
