Chorus rises to Heights in Messiah production by w. Davidson Thomson an audience of Over at tended the first musical production to be held in Winnipeg s magnificent new Arena thursday night. The Appeal of Handel s Messiah is Gilt edged and unshakeable and this oratorio was the Choice of the men s musical club of Winni Peg to whom had been Given the Honor of presenting the opening concert. No doubt in time Many other sounds will be heard in the same precincts but glorious Han these. The gentler strains of Messiah Lave been a Solace in the past. Its sturdier passages have kept alive Hope and Faith. 600-voice choir on this occasion a choir of 600 voices and an excellent orchestra conducted by Donald Leggat gave a Fine presentation of this Well loved work. The balance of parts was unusually Good and there were Many times during the evening when the choir Rose to great Heights of Fine choral singing. At other times there was the feeling that the Tempo was a Little too hurried to permit climaxes being realized As for instance in the chorus for unto us. In the chorus surely he hath borne our Griefs a Fine Tempo was adopted and big full tone came through in All parts. Again however the All we like sheep chorus was hurried and the Tempo became quite erratic. One of the most effective bits of chorus work was done in he trusted in god. As usual the audience Rose to its feet for the hallelujah chorus and when the huge choir got Well launched on that titanic Page it really did seem to us As we had been told it would and As it seemed to Handel himself As if the heavens were opening out before our Well taken the last group of choruses worthy is the Lamb Blessing and Honor and the amen chorus was overwhelming in Good volume and tone the leads being Well taken in All parts. The singing of All the soloists was Good but that of Soprano Lois Marshall was quite outstanding. She seemed to be the Only one to realize the acoustical difficulties the Arena and adjust her Effort to it. Her artistry is evident in All she does and her gauging of the probable acoustics of the huge Arena was completely effective. Her voice reached every part of the House without sacrifice of tone Quality or effective interpretation. Her singing of i know that my redeemer liveth so vocally pure was most moving. Contralto Gladys Kriese was heard to Best advantage in her aria he shall feed his flock but she evidently did not take into account of the Hall. Norman Farrow Sang the Bass solos with clarity and expedition though not always in the Han delian tradition. He too was somewhat at a disadvantage in the Arena. Sung with clarity Winnipeg Tenor George Kent was quite at Home in his Messiah work. The opening recitative and air. Comfort be and every Valley were Sung with clarity and authority As was the air but thou did St not leave. Here again the voice was Bright and the form authoritative. The orchestra s work was of a very High order and was notable for its verve and for its sensitivity in the accompaniments for both soloists and choir. Donald Leggat conducted with due regard to the needs of each occasion. The committees of the men s musical club and its women s auxiliary Are to be congratulated on the Success of the evening financially As Well As artistically. Meanwhile the pro German forces continue to make unlimited use of the word traitor to describe the pro european Saar Landers Al though they do not describe West German Chancellor Konrad Ade Nauer As such for having signed the Saar Europe animation agree ment with France. Rather they say that he was blackmailed by the French into doing it As the Price for ending the Western occupation of the Bonn Republic.
