All through it i was sustained by the thought that soon i d be basking in the California Sunshine in my own Yard i should have known better. I should have remembered that i m an actress and seemingly destined to see More and More of the world. Within four weeks after Ray re turn to Hollywood i was packing my Well worn Luggage once More. Quo Vadis had loomed on the horizon and i had been selected. It came As no Surprise to me that it was to be made not at the Home base but in Rome. And it was in that ancient City that i spent the next seven months of my life. Home for 2 years when i returned i was Lucky. I accepted an offer to appear on Broadway in Tea and sym the play ran for 91 weeks in new York. Shortly before the end of its run i went to England for a picture with Van Johnson. It s a Good thing however i did t unpack my suitcase when i sailed to America. For the next 35 weeks i toured the country in Tea and sym i Pathy visiting 40 cities from coast to coast. Not that i m complaining. As Long As i had to go somewhere i could t imagine anything More wonderful than to travel across the United states. I had Only seen it by air. That had been Long enough for me to realize that it is a magnificent country in which Beauty is the Queen and where majesty and splendor Are every where. Two Days after the tour finished in California i was on my Way to the Virgin islands for the proud and the but now i m to Holly Wood. The King and i let me stay around town for awhile and Tea and with John making for Mem along with John Kerr and Leif Erickson who also created their roles on Broadway will keep me Here until the end of june. Wait and see policy for red chinese by Ralph Chapman new York red China refusing to go All out for the new Kremlin policy of Complete denunciation of Stalin is playing a waiting game to see Liat May happen according to private reports received Here from nationalist chinese head quarters on Formosa. On the other hand the Chiang Kai Shek government is not at All surprised that piping Bas not joined fully in the Down with Stalin chorus which began to swell in Moscow four months ago. Informed chinese almost con stantly in Cable Contact with for Mosa gave this picture based on intelligence reports and on a knowledge of the Workings of the Oriental mind Mao Tze Tung red chinese Leader simply does not believe that Russia s vaunted collective leadership will last. He and his closest advisers think that there is a continuing struggle for Power in the Kremlin and that sooner or later a new Strong Man will emerge. Caution proceeding from that Assumption the piping government is not prepared to go out on a limb against the one Man cult which Stalin promoted to such an extent that he was almost deified Dur ing and for some time after Bis lifetime. Red China is going to need. Soviet help for years to come. It cannot afford to take a Chance now that might jeopardize its relations in the future with whomever May emerge As Stalin s successor. This reluctance to follow the new line of the soviet communist party is entirely different from similar reluctance shown by Bri Tish and italian red leaders. The latter Are not running the govern ments of their respective coun tries. They Are seeking some sort of Middle line which will allow them to hold their parties Toge ther and in the Case of the italian communists especially Stem the losses made evident by recent elections. Mao is not worried about his political position As such. What does worry him is that a new Deal in Moscow might Cut off the economic Aid upon which his government depends for its continuance. He knows very Well that the., of his country is still years away from the time when Mainland China can stand on its own feet. Concerned with its own internal problems the collective Leader ship in Russia is not in a Posi Tion to put the screws on Mao at this time. Both he and Premier Chou in Lai have shown in the past that there Are limits beyond which they will not be pushed and the men in the Kremlin Are not willing to seek a test of strength with the chinese until the Domestic situation has been re solved. What Mao has decided upon is to take a calculated risk. Failure of his government to pursue wholeheartedly the anti Stalin line May make the soviet leaders angry but there is nothing much they can do about it now. If Russia does revert Man Rule red China s position will be immeasurably enhanced because it did not fall into the error of what will then be called deviation from the proper communist line.
