The nursing profession had undertaken studies of Job Content. I am not so certain that physicians hospitals and health administrators Are demonstrating an equal awareness or in Ompton drinking husband is problem for wife by Elizabeth Thompson life is bitter for a woman with a Drunken husband As this letter shows dear mrs. Thompson i Hope you won t think me fool ish for writing this Way but there Are some things i am in doubt about anal i need advice. I am 27 years old and my Hus band is 30. We have been married Jeven years and have a baby 14 months old. For the last year or so i have found that i care for my disband less and less. He is very a response ble about things in general. If he says he will is usually an hour late or does t show up at All. He always ends up in a hotel or tavern drinking. He works nights and every night he comes Home that is when he does come Home he reeks with Beer and just glares at me eyes. Sometimes hell Call me from work on the phone and be As Nice As can be. Then when he comes Home after drinking he either won t speak at All or else starts arguments about nothing at All in the Middle of the night. One night he stayed up till 4 in the morning playing the radio real loud so that i would not be Able to sleep As i would not get out of bed to entertain his friends whom he brought in to drink with him at 2 o clock in the morning. When first married we used to have fights about his drinking and not showing up at borne or staving out All night but not any More. I just Don t say anything any More. As a result of one of these arguments he almost strangled me. And i am afraid of what he might do As he s always getting drunk. He seems to want to live like a single Man. At least be carries on like one coming and going As he pleases. He s always saying that if we were to part he would take my Little boy away from me just like that. He tells me he d go to court and really fix it so that i would never see the baby again. As i do not drink or run around i Don t know what he could say about me. I Don t have much of a Home life with my husband so i Don t care much if he goes out of my life but it would kill me to lose my baby. Please Tell me could he do this and what do you think i should do . Go Down to the family court and have a talk with officials there. They will assure you that your husband could t take the Baber away from you and will give their opinion As to whether you could get separate maintenance on grounds of Habi Tual drunkenness. They could also ask your husband to come in for interviews and perhaps find out Why he drinks like this. He might be furious with you for going to the court but he would also know that you had somebody backing you up which would be a Brake on violent behaviour. Undoubtedly your husband is a problem and makes you unhappy but you should realize he is unhappy himself. Drinking to excess is not Only a disease but a symptom of something basically wrong with his personality. If he won t ask for help or accept it nobody can do much for him but it would certainly help to get in touch with the Alano group of alcoholics Anonymous. This group is made up of the families of alcoholics who compare and Exchange ideas. It would help you to under stand your husband perhaps see where you could improve the situation. The group is listed in the phone Book under alcoholics Anonymous. Phone to find out where and when the next meeting is. You could also ask that somebody come to see you and explain How the group works.
