Page 4 Winnipeg free press1, tuesday 22, 1953 How to make a criminal just one mistake you be 4had it this is the third part of an article written in heading Ley jail in the form of an open letter to the citizens of Manitoba by convict 13." convict 13" is the pseudonym of an actual prisoner who served time in heading Ley jail. His open letter has not been abridged or Cut in any Way and appears just As he wrote it. In it he underlines his personal views with vivid word pictures of life in the Penitentiary and tells How events can Lead a Man or boy to become a Imp denied criminal crime. What is it it is something that is caused it does not just happen. For example recent head lines read three Small boys steal explosive Caps one has hand injured by exploding Cap. Released from Hospital but All three must still face author Why where did dad and his old fashioned strap and Wood shed go to this method at least did not open the door to crime and Start the boy or girl Down the present Road of no return. Let me Tell you about a kid of 19, proud As punch who just saved enough and bought him self a car. He was charged with a traffic infraction. Two witnesses were in another town. He drove up to get them and his car broke Down. He wired Back for a remand which was refused and a Bench warrant was issued and he was picked up by a policeman. His car was left in a Gar age and he was driven to a Small town half Way Home where the police officer decided to spend the night. That night the officer locked a scared heart broken kid in a prison cell. Just a bedroom the next morning he opened the cell door on a cocky Little brat who had Learned that a policeman was just a Man in uniform and a prison cell was just a bedroom with a lock on the door. Then there was the Case of a Young Man who left Guelph reformatory on an unconditional release. Five Days later he was working at a position that was a credit to a Man a record. Six months later he lost his Job because his Bond could not be accepted by the firm he worked for. The same society that convicted him made certain that the conviction was to be a permanent one. Now to refer to another Man who was a tradesman in bus iness in a Small town. He was a member of a local Board of Trade and had a Dunn and Bradstreet credit rating. He owned his own Home and had a wife he regarded As a Queen. Changed Bills to Cut a Long Story Short a Man robbed a store a few blocks from his place of business and later Skinny men women . It was on the evidence of this tradesman that conviction was to be made. The tradesman was told by the. Police that should he be asked about a possible past record to Tell the truth or he might be charged with perjury. The defending lawyer asked him nothing. Three Days later How Ever he had no More business. No one would speak to him he was at a loss to figure what had opened. Then he heard this conversation in a pub there he is now he is a darn Good tradesman but 1 had no idea lie was an sex con and a this Man thought he was a Good citizen. Just himself and the police knew about his record. Now you know what i mean when i say Down the Road of no this sort of tiling brings on the reaction what s the use they give me the name so i might As Well have the arrest Happy but remember this kind of policeman is in a minority. No Man under the age of 35 years should be considered for the position a police officer anything under that is an arrest Happy what causes crime or. And mrs. Citizen just one fall and a system that makes it impossible to Ever again be a clean decent citizen. Everyone will admit everyone Ruskes mistakes and should re member those lines let those among you who have not sinned cast the first it is human to err that s Why they put erasers on pencils. Under the present system we make Only one mistake and we Don t even have a Pencil let alone an Eraser. We convicts have four rights nothing More. Food clothing shelter and medical care. Or. And mrs. Citizen will you please Grant this one privilege. The privilege of suggesting a cure for the sordid mess i have described in the preceding articles. Citizens pay first look at it from the con vict s Point of View inside. The real injured party is you or. And mrs. Citizen. You pay the Bills. Second the loved ones who Are left outside to Bear the shame be it Alt. Yes loved ones we convicts Are capable of love we love Ana breathe the same air As you we cherish the same dreams As you but ours must it seems always remain nothing but a dream. Now let s look at the convict in Side doing time. The four rights every human being accepts have taken on a lot of frills under the cover of privileges. Added to this is what should be symbols of constituted authority. Our haphazard prison staff is in the degraded position of being servants forced to take insults that no Man should have to take simply because they have the fear of losing their jobs. We have equipment and clothing furnished of which 60 per cent is destroyed by convicts for amuse ment. We have shows games and recreation furnished in fact most of the prison population live bet Ter inside than they Ever did out Side. As a result they Are fast to develop a self aggrandisement Complex. All millionaires they Are All Busy trying to impress others of this. They Are All millionaires. The Only punishment i found was on visiting Day when i looked at the wives and children Waith with the crowd in the main their eyes Bright with the Prospect of seeing their husband or father for one Short hour. I could t help but ask myself if the Day would Ever come for me when i could win Back for my self and my loved ones a clean place in society. As Long As you have us convicts on this. no return and instead of giving us something Concrete and solid you continue to give us frills in the Guise of privileges we will always re main convicts. The Only cure is to make a prison a prison and no More. Equip it and staff it to hold and leave no doubt in the world As to who is Boss. Prison riots fear riots. What is a prison riot nothing just a lot of Racket caused by the convicts. A lot of spineless convicts. When you get under the thin veneer a convict so foolishly covers himself with there is nothing More spineless than what you find in the would be Tough Guy. Take All the frills off prison and hold it with rigid discipline and rules that Are never relaxed and you take away the needed nerve for convicts to Start a riot. And remember provincial jails Are training schools for the Penitentiary. Empty the first and you shut off the Supply for the last. Have Good food without any frills a system of identification where every convict is responsible for his and everything he works with have a Fine made for everything wilfully destroyed or misused and the Power to allow these fines to be changed from Money to additional time on the first of every month. Cause damage there Are Twenty Odd men in a Tine of cells. One or two for smart Ness Sake break up fittings or cause damage to the cent Interior. Add up the value of each breakup and charge every Man in there the same amount. Drop the phony idea of anything so stupid and foolish As a convict earning privileges and amusement. These extras Are what takes away the prison sting and Day to Day existence. Prisons Are made to be prisons and not Homes for men and women who have neither the Backbone nor ability to look after themselves outside. Society can put Down riots and uprisings outside so Why the silly fear of. A prison riot let me Tell you the first Initia Tion the condemned Man under goes we will take the port of entry to heading Ley provincial jail. Just where to Start poses some what of a problem but let us picture the Man in the waiting bread Jam Tea breakfast consists of dry bread Jam and Tea. Dinner consists of a Slop that passes for Stew accompanied by dry bread with no beverage. Supper As breakfast dry bread Jam and Tea. Sleeping accommodations Are Hardwood benches with no mat tresses or blankets there Are no cleaning and washing facilities. There is no deviation from these facts and it is quite a Combina Tion boards to break your Back and the food takes care of the spirit. Several weeks of this treat ment and a Man is anxious to plead guilty for something better.
