Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 28, 1958, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press monday july 28, 1958 Page of Gold Eye glints by Don Blanchard dear link whew what a spin tingler. No matter what Jouve heard this All Star game is everything it s cracked up to be Man that Pitcher out there on the Hill saturday night in the Winnipeg Gold Eye uni form had More courage than that Badger whose been killing All of Farmer Fritz hounds Back Home he can put that of Ball in a Button Hole. You remember the Guy in the Blue suit who goes through All those gyrations at Home plate Well not once did he let an All Star take first on a base on balls. When a. Pitcher throws four pitches which this Guy does t consider Are Good enough to swing at he lets him walk to first base Well Unk i wish you could have been Here but i realize now hard it is to get away what with the wild horse round up and a. They went 10 innings before the Hittle shortstop Mike Delahoz for the All Star team hit the Hal so hard it flew right out of the Ball Park. He did t look like no babe Ruth to me but he Suie hit the hayseed out of that of Pellett. He was bailing eighth in the line up too. That was the old Ball game the Gold eyes went out one two three in the Bottom of the inning also Unk it was the first time this mid summer classic went into overtime since 1948. The All stars won that one too beating grand Forks in 12 innings 4-3. The Gold eyes Hod a barrel of chances to heat these Guys who were selected by the league s writers. The writers sat up in a Cage with Glass windows of see the action and one Guy kept waving his Book at me. Anyway getting Back to has Gold Eye Pitcher his name is Howie Peterson and he s from Florida that Young Man should receive a citation or something for the real Good Job he did out there. Just think he did t let an ail Star score for nine Complete innings. These Guys from out of town have batting averages which would scare the Normal Pitcher out of a year s growth. But not this Lethander. He told me lie likes to be called Pete but that sounds like kind of an Ordinary name for a Pitcher like him. He was a big Man yesterday. He Only gave up seven hits one Guy was pretty Lucky to get a double two bases when he sent a Blooper Over the third baseman s head in the third inning. But Pete did t let him get any Huther you would think Pete s pin Point pitching was enough but he also got two hits for himself and nearly scored the first run on a play they Call a sacrifice Fly. However that cagey. Winnipeg manager Al Unser Wmk in t let his prize Pitcher try to score on the play. Al Aid he did t want to take a Chance on getting his Star Hurt sliding Inlo Home plate which 1 agree with. He also had respect for All Star right fielder Manny Jiminez and it was Early m the game anyway i Don t think he would have scored anyway although it would have been close. But that was t the big play of the game As far As i m concerned. The All stars had a husky youngster playing second base named Bruno Terilli who is built like one of those big Douglas firs we have Back Home. He s not very tall though but thick. Anyway the Gold eyes had. A runner on third base in the eighth inning Jim Shaffer and a pint sized Guy who hit the Ball up against the Light Field Fence in the fourth inning Rogers Robinson hit a Sharp grounder to the left of first base. Terilli fielded the Ball and made a perfect Rifle like toss to the Catcher to Nab Schaffer trying to score. It was a close play but Jim told me afterwards in the dressing room he had been tagged before Curling his toe around Home plate. 1 thought that was real truthful of the Gold Eye Catcher he s an All Star that run would have Given these Winni Eggers the Ball game. They Haven t had the game Here since 1942, so they were really wanting to win. I went into the All Star dressing room and everyone was slap Ping this Delahoz on the Back so hard he kept spitting out his chewing gum. He did t seem to mind though. He was in a pretty Good mood. The All Star manager Ken Silvestri said it was a real big league Ball game. Unser agreed and for contrast compared it to the major league game a lacklustre thing held in Baltimore earlier this month Unser had nothing but Praise for his own boys especially Peterson. Al was Quick to commend the All stars too. He. Thought the Gold eyes left far too Many men on base 13 but admitted his lads were up against the Best pitching in the league. Also that visiting manager had fresh checkers coming in All the time. So that made it that much More difficult for the locals. One More thing Uncle. 1 forgot to mention the fact that they moved the Loftfield Fence Back at least 15 feet so Delahoz Homer travelled 350 feet. That s further than you can throw that Young Heifer of yours Back on the ranch. Also the visitors had a big Catcher named John Orsino from St. Cloud Rox who hit a Ball into deep Loftfield in the second inning but that tall texan Bobby Moegle caught the Ball As it was going Over the Fence. Welu unc we had a party after the game and . Don t forget to take your holidays at All Star game time next year. Little Freddy. Gold Eye glints the Northern league baseball writers association had its annual meeting saturday afternoon. Those pre sent from out of town were Eugene Fitzgerald Dell Buzzell eau Claire Larry Desautels Aberdeen ame rican Jim Hanson grand Forks Herald and Frank Farring ton St. Cloud it is the first time since 1950 the All stars have been Able to get on even terms with the Host team.
