I960, entitled a ukrainian a casual perusal of the said article would tend to indicate to the average Reader that the View is that of All the ukrainians in Manitoba. Such is not the Case however. The newspaper quoted namely. The ukrainian voice is of the ukrainian orthodox group who Are not even the largest Sec Tion of ukrainians in Manitoba. On the other hand some ukrainian catholics in Manitoba hold a directly opposite View. And this group who form the largest Section of ukrainians in Manitoba actively interested in the our submission to the Royal commission requested financial assistance from Public funds to parochial and private and our stand in that regard is re affirmed. We feel that our stand is justified As beneficial not Only As re Gards the interests of our group but also As regards the interests proceedings commission before the Royal on education and Pickersgill Sparks a rhubarb Ottawa w. We take the privilege of Quot ing the following paragraph from our Brief we wish to emphasize on Thi occasion two distinct though in separable aspects of ukrainian Catholic life in Manitoba. One of these factors is our Basic religious conviction the source of our traditional determination to obtain for our children a Type of Edu cation which will give adequate recognition to the Catholic Faith. The other is the cultural heritage which we cherish As a legacy from our forefathers and which we desire to share with our Fel Low citizens As a legitimate and indeed desirable contribution to jumped to his feet in the com Mons tuesday and shouted angrily my personal Honor has been he demanded on a Point of privilege that Eldon Wolliams pc Bow River substantiate what or. Pickersgill had no legitimate Point of privilege because or. Wolliams statements did not reflect on the Newfoundland member s character. Of the whole Community i As we Are convinced that for the development of Good Canadian citizens the training Given in Par Ochial and private schools is essential. The matter of moral development of Good Canadian citizens is not a private matter of the Home and Church Only it is the duty of the state also and this contribution the state can make by giving financial Aid to parochial and private schools. The assertion that parochial and private schools would Lead to anti socialism and isolation has no basis. Private and parochial schools have existed for centuries in England and Scotland for in stance and there Are hundreds of such schools in the United states As Well As in Canada state assisted or nou it be proved that anti Winnipeg Frek a kiss. In fact if the present Stu Dent population of the private and parochial schools which numbers Over in Manitoba were required to be accommodated in pub Lic schools today at state expense. It would Cost the province an additional sum of Over annually. This expense is now being borne by the parents in addition to paying regular Public school taxes even if the recommendation of the Royal commission were adopted in its entirety regards financial Aid to parochial and private schools the parents would nevertheless he still obliged to carry a major portion of the maintenance of such Paro Chial and private schools. We feel that in True democracy the majority cannot impose onto a minority a situation through which the latter would suffer. All the provinces of Canada except Manitoba and British Columbia give some form of financial Aid to private and parochial schools.
