Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 13, 1962, Winnipeg, Manitoba N above returns to the screen after an absence of eight years to Star with Gregory Peck Robert Mitcham and Lori Martin in Cape fear. The actress last seen on the screen with William Holden a escape from fort Bravo is shown during the Savannah Georgia location filming of the new suspense drama More about report continued from Page 1 in Provencher the social credit backing comes in pockets but within these pockets it looks impressively Strong. John p. Loewen the Altona contractor who is the social credit candidate has been carry in on an under Over Campaign which is proving effective for his party and unnerving for his opposition a few Public meetings have been held but most of the june the social credit Mes Sage has been presented to three or four gathered to Gether in the living rooms and kitchens of private Homes. Gatherings of this sort have proved to be the Best Way of transmitting what in these parts is not the watered Down doctrine preached by National Leader Robert Thompson but the pure social credit essence with its potent mixture of revealed re Ligion exclusively Christian and Home bred finance. Social credit s religious Over tones Are having their strongest effect in the mennonite areas where every second Highway crossing seems to Bear a sign warning passing motorists to to meet thy god the party has impressive strength in the towns of Altona and Gretna and in the smaller mennonite villages in that area. In Steinbach their Campaign appears to have been less effective. Outside of these areas. Social credit strength is at Best spotty and. Without More general sup port the party cannot expect to but there is no doubt that the social credit Campaign pro Vides the key to Success for the liberals and conservatives. Social credit is strongest in the areas where or. Jorgenson found Strong support in his 1958 Victory and where or. Roberts is finding the toughest going this time. If social credit As expected polls strongly in these areas it will automatically tighten up the race. Deaths Bonne Rene of 62 Isabel Street at the age of 59 years. Archie Mccallum 81, retired surgeon Como Dore of the Royal Canadian Navy. Or. Jorgenson won the seat for the first time in 1957. He got votes to for the Liberal incumbent Rene Jutras. The social credit candidate got votes. A year later the social credit vote dropped by and or. Jorgenson s went up by the Liberal candidate. Rone pre Fontaine increased his party s vote to and still lost the seat by votes. Or. Jorgenson s margin came from a substantial increase in the number of voters and from a swing in votes from social credit to the conservatives. This time social credit will Likely get Back the votes lost to the conservatives in 1958 and More besides. Or. Roberts has a Good lib eral base to work on. His own former provincial constituency of la Verendrye runs along the top of the Riding. Below that is Carillon help by Liberal Edmond Prefontaine. From there to the . Border lies Emerson constituency help by Liberal John Tanchak. Both Las Are working hard on his Campaign. His biggest problem lies in the part of the Riding West of the red River the same area in which social credit is showing its greatest strength. His strongest support appears to be along the Southern. Edge of the Riding and in the scrub farming and lumbering areas at the East end. Adequate support is shaping up in the French Canadian communities along the East Bank of the River. But to win. He will have to make a Strong showing in one of the centres of concentrated population Steinbach Morris or Altona. In Morris and Altona social credit strength May prevent either the Liberal or the conservative from achieving a sub Stantial poll but or. Jorgenson will get More votes than or. Roberts. At Steinbach the situation is not Clear. The people there keep their politics to them selves. The town could easily produce a three Way saw off and any candidate who can come out of it with substantially More than a third of the votes will be Well on the Way . Or. Jorgenson can count on the help of Only one provincial la Harry Shewman in Morris but he is working whole hearted by. The Jorgenson Camp is full of Confidence or. Jorgenson has kept his fences in better repair than most Federal members and his personal popularity is High. As parliamentary assistant to the minister of agriculture he is Basing his Campaign largely on a defence of the government s record in that Field. Since most of the voters in the Riding Are Farmers and since the Farmers appear generally to approve of the record it is an effective line although some of his sup porters wish he would wage More of a personal Campaign. Or. Roberts has found Trade to be the Issue which most arouses the voters. It makes for an effective debate because or. Jor Genson refuses to pay the usual lip service to free Trade. Alongside the Public electioneering is one of the year s nastier whispering campaigns against or. Roberts most of it apparently originating with the conservatives. A Days visit to the Riding can produce at least half a dozen different rumours some of them flatly untrue and some self contradictory. The liberals say their Campaign has been making encouraging Progress in the past month Are now talking about Victory but even with some help from social credit they face an up Hill fight against a member who has become solidly in Tench de in the past five years. The new democratic party candidate is Peter Kruszelnicki a Winnipeg school teacher. He is showing tie Flag bravely but his prospects Are non existent. Black look at storm sewers Many ratepayers in the Kings Park development of fort Garry Don t want storm sewers. This was made Clear to fort Garry municipal Council tuesday when it received a petition Bear ing the signatures of 132 rate payers in the area opposing installation of storm sewers. The petitioners have a greater majority than 51 per cent. If this is the Case it will probably mean the scrapping of the project which also includes installation of sanitary sewers and water and sewer feeder Mains. Ditches actually the ratepayers favor the sanitary sewers and feeder. Mains but feel that with storm sewers taxes would be too High. They claim the ditches now be ing used Are an adequate substitute for storm sewers. Council is advocating what rate payers refer to As a package the petitioners want a separate sewer system. We Are faced with two choices Deal or reject it. We do not want to do one ratepayer said. Vaughn l. Baird a lawyer re presenting four Kings Park rate payers said his clients were opposed to the method of assessing the Cost of the storm sewers. These men feel they Are pay ing a Cost of an oversize sewer on their or. Baird said. He contended that one third the Cost of sewer installation should be paid by the municipality As a whole. He estimated the sewer outfall would Cost which would be a local improvement assessment in District 6. Installing storm sewers would Cost the individual Homeowner a frontage foot compared with for water Mains and an other for sanitary sewers.
