Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 16, 1962, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press saturday june a 13 less of generous Enthus with Are meritocracy sir the political innovations of our times signify nothing less than the political domination the multitude. The old Noc was tempered by a dose of liberalism and of for Law. Ii believe Ortega y. Gasset that we today witnessing the of hype democracy which acts i recur outside the Law imposing us aspirations and desires by Means of material pressure voters do not coldly tag Cally reason things out do not even very often exe Rase Intel self interest but Are influenced by flattery by Appeal to their prejudices by the Good Loots of the candidate and above a by a candidate s paying them attention As persons by so Small Arne Assurance to proclaim the rights of the commonplace and to impose them wherever it will. In Brief anybody who does not think like everybody runs the risk of being eliminated. This is the formidable fact of our times. T have altered the verse which follows for the present purpose to read enough of politicking and its kind close out the Barren Flebes come Forth and bring with you a mind that watches critically before it receives. Winnipeg. H. Bowling counting Beans sir or. Hubert Badani in his letter of june 9 complains that your reporter was most inaccurate in reporting the attendance at a political meeting held a f Ort William on june 2. He at tempts to prove that the reporter s estimate of about per sons was a Gross because his association served orders of Beans. We know from the press photo graphs that the association Mem Bers and the guest speaker ate Beans and How Many present ate two or More plates of Beans is anybody s guess. It is a matter of Tom As to whether or not there is some element of corruption where attendance at a Politi Cal meeting is sought on a basis of giving something for nothing even if it is not an intoxicant. Mathematical proofs of this kind would hardly qualify a can for the very intricate a involved in govern ment. I feel certain that the Esti mate of attendance made by the free press reporter was made on a More practical basis and that he was As near Correct As is possible. Thomas Thorpe fort Frances ont. The record sir it is shocking and Appau letters to the editor Only alternative sir it is Difei cult to und stand Why the Prairie would support this nip sex Kcf candidates in the june election. Financed by labor unions As declared by or. Argue labor s objective is More Shorter hours. That situation could easily be translated into a. Series of strikes and i strife. Even a Small group of new party maps at Ottawa would be bound to up hold labor since the old saw holds Good who pays the Piper Calls the International unions even the notorious Haifa inter ests would have a say in policy. Where does that leave the Farmer in that situation it Means higher costs for All farm sup plies machinery Etc a study of Hansard indicates that the Small Kcf group supported the Liberal stand in parliament approximately four times out of five on the vote record. Perhaps that was a Good reason for or. Argue to join the liberals since he was voting with them most of the time. Those against the Diefenbaker government should realize that the Only alternative is a Liberal government and that party should receive the opposition vote. Vancouver. . . Good times sir i Well remember when the liberals raised their salaries and gave themselves a pension annually before they were Defeated. No wonder they had no deficit anyone who travelled on the highways can testify to be condition of the roads. Now in four years we can tra Vel comfortably for hundreds of Miles and no blow outs for those who Are not anxious to make a hurried exit into the next world. To my Delight i can go to any part of the world and have my old age pension Cheque sent on to me which has never happened before. As regards the evaluated Dollar anyone with any intelligence at All knows it is the Best in the Long run what ver party you belong to. What s Good for you is Good for me remember you first War veterans those of you who were n the first War were never considered on Active service unless you served in France. Diefenbaker altered All that. A far As free medical is concerned my sister in England was at the Bottom of a list of 100 patients and was forced to Jet a specialist to perform an operation. Since being in can Ada i have paid my own hos Tali nation and doctors until Low. Now i am paying for other eople s As Well and i Don t be grudge it. When i read about what soc Alisa is doing in Europe i. Am right behind Diefenbaker because know i am. Better off in the Ong run having tried them All. Winnipeg . Cuse or. Pearson of being soft on communism. As minister of external affairs in the previous Ubl ral Pearson brought to Canada the highest gift and Reward the world could offer for his fight against communism and his efforts for peace and in his acceptance speech said and i quote this is indeed an Honor which t accept in All humility on behalf of the people of the words of a gentleman Diplomat and statesman. These accusations have never to my knowledge been retracted. It s High time they were or an apol 087 by the . To or Pearson and All canadians on behalf of himself and party. The . Blames the terrible awful Liberal party for the Heck Ling he s been receiving. This Well deserved booing is for some of his unfilled promises. Do you not remember this one or. .? no one shall suffer from unemployment when i am prime min As for this wheat Deal with China a very unstable Market the creator provides the Market through the drouth the wheat makes the Sale and the says make no mistake my government takes full the debased Buck i am sure will make the old age pensioners very Happy As Well As those who would Benefit by the vote catching increase in the children s exemption for income tax and on the 18th of june or. You will be told in no Uncertain Man Ner by the Consumers what they think of your mismanagement of the affairs that brought this about. Finally in the words of Patrick Henry i have but one lamp to guide me in these matters Anc that is the lamp of experience i have no Way of judging the future but by the St. James s. B. Nmn vicious Circle sir who would have thought 40 years ago when i made my major insurance Purchase that our Dollar would shrink to its present i bought whole life pay because it gave me most insurance for my Money. There has been a reduction in the Effort required to earn the Premium and i am now paying in 33c dollars but the legacy will be entirely in cheapened dollars. Inflation is a wicked thing. I operates in a vicious Circle Anc is less controllable than planned devaluation. Hanover. Ont. Gilbert James c. Gardiner sir sir Wilfrid Laurier said when the Liberal party is in Power you will not need to be told that there is Prosperity in the country. All you will need to do is put your hand Down in your own pocket and you will feel it takes a lot of feel ing today to find Prosperity in one s own pocket i read your Story in the free press weekly about my Uncle Jimmy the it. Hon. James Garfield Gardiner. Uncle Jimmy was born not far from where i live now. My Mother is his sister. She lives on the same farm today that her brother Jimmy left in 1901, at the age of 17, to go into Western Canada my farm adjoins hers. A plaque honouring her brother Jimmy is being erected at the thames Road. United Church on Highway no. 83 by the Sites Board of the Bureau of tourists and publicity of the on Tario government through the women s Institute. It unveiled this coming july. Uncle Jimmy attended this Church Sun Day school and nearby Public school As. A boy. Most of the land cleared by Gardiner pioneers in the Vicinity of Farquhar and the Boundary be tween Huron and Perth is still in the hands of Gardiner descent dents. The sketch by Peter Kuch of Uncle Jimmy bears a striking re semblance to his Mother whose Maiden name was Elizabeth Brown. Perhaps you might be interested to know that Elizabeth Brown was the daughter of we. Brown and his spouse Isabella Rutherford of Glasgow Scotland. The Mother of we. Brown and the Mother of Alexander Macken Zie the first Liberal prime min ister of Canada were Sisters. Brown s Mother died when he was a Small boy and the Mother of Mackenzie raised him. Brown died at the Home of one of his daughters who lived in Seattle. Washington . And is buried in that City. His wife who pre deceased him is buried in Roy s cemetery just off Highway no. Canada s name sir most people would agree Musi Flop in. Wurum that the prime minister of body w orgy a should be a Man of unquestioned integrity sincerity Man who could be. Relied on to keep his word. A spokesman for the British government is reported to have Saidi we have lost Confidence in or. Diefenbaker his word cannot be this remark seems to have been prompted by or. Diefenbaker s about face when after hav ing Given Assurance that efforts would be made to increase Trade Between Britain and Canada he imposed increased tariffs on Tex tiles and in other ways restricted imports into Canada. With regard to internal Economy Many in stances could be Given of unsound government measures huge financial deficits year after year attempts to silence or. Coyne when he tried to warn the government unwise policies of finance obstruction and frustration with regard to the efforts of Bri Tain to enter the Ecim. True if this some adjust ment will be necessary with re Gard to Commonwealth preferences but what right has or. Diefenbaker to complain in View of his action to restrict British imports. In any Case the ultimate Benefit to Britain and the Commonwealth of larger markets Are Likely to More than i recompense for any harm which would be done to Commonwealth preferences. The disgraceful conduct of or. Fleming and or. Hees at Accra wild statements accusations and threats caused strained re Jons Between Britain and Ca Nada. In View of the record of the government the people of Ca Nada should consider very care fully whether it is Wise to re elect them to continue on the course they have pursued during the past five years. Winnipeg 83. Kirklon ont. J. Glenn Allen Sunshine Dollar sir the tourist season is at hand. Let s look at the Small print to see if devaluation is All Sunshine. In 1961, canadians spent outside of Ca Nada of it in the . The total was More than visitors spent in this country. The retail sales tax is no deter rent to spending nor is the All too common 20 to 25% interest rate on instalment purchases. So i Don t suppose devaluation will make any difference except May be the extra on transportation to great Britain to people who skimp and save to go Home for intelligence service sir the Manitoba Branch of the Canadian anti communist league takes the responsibility for having distributed a Large number of nip new democratic party1 and other issues of the Canadian intelligence service in Winnipeg North Centre and else where in recent woks. This distribution will coils Niue. The Canadian intelligence ser vice is a Christian publication and not As reported in the free press a Neo fascist one this being a term. Used by the communists to designate any publication or group that seriously threatens their communist objectives. The critics of the Canadian intelligence service in the recent newspaper reports did not raise he question of the truth of the statements made by it. If any one would like to Point out any untruthful statements made in the service its editor would probably appreciate having his attention drawn to them. Winnipeg Salome Halldorson Sec y Manitoba Branch Canadian anti communist i think the Premium a visit. Nor do will attract More tourists. But it makes Good sense for Seattle world fair visitors to travel a Short distance further to take in the beauties of our Pacific coast and Rockies. Based on 1961 figures it would Cost canadians of which would be Given to foreigners when they Exchange their Money i doubt whether americans. Coming to their summer estate or to visit friends will spend any More than formerly. Why Short change ourselves to make them Richer Hanaver ont. John Gilbert automated citizens sir the Issue on election Day june 18, in not what political party is going to be elected but will we Ren Iain a free people or become automation in a welfare state the Saskatchewan nip Kcf government has attempted to conscript the doctors. Under this compulsory scheme the doctors can Only treat the patient and give service according. To the rules and regulation s by the medicare commission. This is Only a Start on govern ment control of individuals if they doctors wha will be next the re Tailer the lawyer the fire insurance groups the Hail insurance it will be control of All in time because the end in View is a welfare stated another Issue which has., been played up into a political bal Loon is. Thu. Pegging of the Cana Dian Dollar. How Many people have really it Houglin about this Issue. A leading banker and president of Ibe Bank of Montreal said Vancouver last month that be Fecit pegging of at a rate of 92% cents in terms of the a Jav Dollar was a Good thing. It removed the Opportunity for speculation in the Canadian Dollar. Regii Grace Stewart j. G. P. Grim record sir Many voters today Are in doubt As to How to vote. The old saying that history re Peats itself holds Good today just As much As in the Days of the depression in the thirties and the tory Bennett government. Trade barriers were set up against other countries and All of West Ern Canada suffered greatly As a result of Low prices for their products and no outlet for their Sale. Similarly Sale of our Basic products is going to suffer the Best brains sir the entire governing the would be to assume that even the majority of canadians control most of the decisions of Ottawa. Very often a minority group chiefly is be Hind a Choice. The people can and do publicly criticize govern ment decisions but All too often the damage has been done so far As some Are concerned at any rate and May not be easily or soon undone if at All. Most or All criticism of government should be led by experts in the Field under consideration rather than by those who stand to profit. As valid criticism sometimes is voiced or heeded too late to be of much value if any it be hooves us to elect to office a government that is As Well educated and As practical As pos sible though the members need no High finish socially. Parties should Endeavor to provide candidates highly trained both in theory and in practise mainly along scientific lines and leaders in their Fields and preferably not in a financial sense. A professor of economics might handle Fin Ance. I would think that such a government one with a preponderance of the Best brains in the country would generally make excellent decisions clearly in line with needs of this age of space development atomic Power Auto mation and growing communications capable of High speeds. Mere talk is not enough. Too Many lawyers and other skilful or Tricky speakers have contributed to the failure of our coun try to Progress fast enough in the right direction. May the powerful non City vote bring us Ever better government. Unfortunately our City votes Don t count to any great extent. Winnipeg City voter league oratorical statesman sir social credit supporters rallied in Winnipeg s Capitol theatre. As the issues in the election were defined the audience Felt convinced that the speaker for the evening honorable or. Bennett Premier of British Columbia ranks among the last survivors of Canada s great oratorical statesmen. Throughout the evening he never lost his smile when reporting to a Sprink Ling of gum chewing youths whose questions revealed that their knowledge of politics was limited. Premier Bennett Felt prepared to Cope with hecklers since he was not handicapped with a typed speech which seems to be the Standard identification tag for leaders of the competing Par ties. Though provided with a suitcase. Full of. Documents newspapers Federal reports Etc., or. Bennett kept his eyes in glassed and his hands free so As to be Able to Point in the direction of the heckler whom he regarded As a Friend in need of understanding. When asked what he thought of the Alert Premier admitted with a Graceful Bow and smile that at times we Are All badly in need medical that roaring every heckler so that even the noisiest one said thank you from that Point situation was under till written questions prolonged the session till the that neither or. Por the prime i minister had granted the Winnipeg audience Aii Opportunity to ask this Ina or difference in stage deportment Ron the part of party leaders Mayn decide the Issue on june. A Quebec Citi zen will entrusted with the Jupin Sivility preforming can next government in Accord Ance the practical Princi pals administration that makes provision for the needy but insists that every Able bodied worker earn his bread Iff the sweat of his own brow Winnipeg. Leonard Krueger through devaluation of the Dollar to 92% cents and especially in our Trade with the United states we will get that much less. This is an example of erecting a Trade Barrier and will no doubt be Fol Lowed by other hidden Price rises such As gasoline and motor products Citrus fruits and vege tables farm machinery Etc., Etc. We Are told that the Western Farmer is being helped but re member the Farmers trek to Ottawa in March of 1957, and How their pleas were turned Down. In the depression Era the farm ers stuck together by organizing their wheat pools and other farm co operatives to get better prices for their farm products and it certainly got no help from the Bennett government. The Western Farmers had to stand and work together to help themselves. The civil service is becoming a political tory football. It is said there is no future for Good men in this Field As an example general Mcnaughton and or. Coyne of the Bank of Canada who were both of the highest calibre and integrity yet sum Marily dismissed. What of the conservative elec Tion promises of 1957 and 58? it is said that an outstanding record was made when so few were Ful filled _ As quoted by certain newspapers. An All time record has been established for spending by the conservative government and with big every year the debts have increased by the huge amount of three billion dollars. The interest on this alone is very great _ so How will we Ever Hope to pay this amount plus the principal of three billions orgy of frenzied Fin Ance and deficit spending must be stopped by you the voters of so let us get Back to forensic gifts sir Why is it that nip s Doug Las is the Only one of the four that does not need a prepared speech written by someone else. Is it because he is the Only one that is telling the truth Why is it nip s Douglas has challenged Pearson Diefenbaker and Thompson either one at a time or All together to a debate and none has dared accept.? grit and tory same old Story. Social credit worse than tory. Prince Albert Suk. Parker dictating to doctors sir it has been said that socialized Medicine has been successful in England Sweden rus Sia and other countries. Canada cannot be compared with these countries for our can Ada is made up of people who came from these countries to escape suppression and gain demo cratic Freedom. Socialist govern ment control of Medicine or any other business is nothing but dictatorship As shown in the Way the Saskatchewan government is handling the socialized medi Cal scheme there. The Kcf is backed by labor unions and yet this government is using the very ammunition that the labor unions so strongly against the doctors Union. They believe in collective bargaining yet they have not even listened to any suggestion of the doctors or people support ing the doctors to moderate the socialized medical plan. It is the government made plan or go to jail. The Kcf government would not dare to put plus Issue to the people for a vote now for they know that it would be Defeated. Winnipeg e a. H. Men of distinction sir f. Tesarski s suggestion that someone running for political office should promote a program in our schools to educate the boys and girls about the harmful effects of smoking is a Good one. However do we have a candidate with enough courage and moral stamina to promote such a stand it would appear that one must at the very least Compromise with that which the majority demand in order to gather in the votes. It seems that there Are More smokers than non smokers despite the sad example it sets for our children. Even some of our clerics indulge. As a matter of fact a Cigar in his Mouth appears to be our Era s sign of distinction. A Che Root or pipe chomped Between the Teeth should give evidence that such a one is a member of the City Council or at least a business Mogul of the higher calibre. The truth is however that the Clear Eye and clean breath which is part of the person who practices Temperance is far better evidence of True distinction and nobility. The annals of history Are re plete with men and nations who met their downfall by indulging in habits that had become so commonplace that they no longer appeared exceedingly sinful in their own eyes. In View of this possibility let us enlarge our Temperance resolve to read to partake in moderation of those things that Are Good for us and to totally abstain from All things Portage la Prairie w. Plaatje cigarette habit sir congratulations to or. F. Tesarski for his Well worded and moderate letter on the evils of cigarette smoking and to the free press for printing it in sex Tenso cigarettes have done More harm than any other com says or Tesarski and How right he is once More he hits the Bull s Cloudy Issue sir much has criticism been far too of chairman Bonnycastle. Both in letters to fhe editor and the morning beef ses Sion Over station Job. Matro was put there by the Boblin government which must share in the responsibilities of the affairs of the metro Council. Eventually both the City of Winnipeg and metro will have to become one organization. Mayor Juba is antagonistic to metro for Many Rea sons and is now Riding on a Crest of Public acclaim for the amount of Good he has done and is doing for the City. There is no doubt he deserves a certain amount of Praise for his efforts but i think he is stretching it a Little far and making the issues involved More Cloudy than Ever. The trouble with metro As i see it is that it came rather late and should have been introduced Many years ago when the Cost of operation would have been a great Deal lower than what it is today. Winnipeg. J b the people s rights sir a letter virtue of metro on May 26, prompts me to write the writer of that letter sounds like a Man who never heard of people s rights. The Issue for Many of the democratic Public is not so much whether metro is necessary or not the Issue is the underhanded method the Roblin government used to Force metro on the Public How he appointed the executive How the unreasonable salaries were set for these men. He acted like a dictator. When an elected body begins to disregard the people s rights. University Entrance sir the article Entrance requirements University prob Lem by t. S. Makes sense. There Are obviously several reasons Why there should be further study and More wide spread discussion of the Wisdom of making Grade Xii the Basic Entrance requirement for the University of Manitoba by 1864. First the petition opposing the Senate s decision carrying the names of a substantial number of staff people in both the University and the colleges Indi Cates that there is widespread apprehension Over this matter. The Public should know the extent and the reason of this opposition. Second no one seems to have demonstrated that there is any advantage to changing the pres ent pattern of University Cal Ranee in Manitoba. The value of the present system is that More promising students can move into University from Grade i and have four years in col lege before securing a degree. Those who prefer to take an additional year in collegiate plus three years in College May do so. It is generally agreed that students in College do not really reach their stride until the third and four year and one of. The chief regrets that most University students have is Fiat they Are Only finding their Way into University studies when graduation arrives. Third the comparative Posi Tion of Manitoba and other prov inces should be studied. Recently or. Robin Ross the registrar of the University of Toronto was quoted in a Toronto newspaper As saying that students admitted from other provinces do approximately As Well As the Ontario students who enter the University with a Grade Xiii standing there May Well be advantages in permitting students to move ignore the majority for a Selec-1 to University at the level we Ted few we the Public Are in i Perry it in Manitoba very grave danger. I disagree fourth there should be a Carp with the letter writer when he j fun analysis provided relative to says the source of discontent with metro can be traced to a few City aldermen. How wrong the qualifications of those who teach at Grade Xii and those at first year University. We must he is. There Are hundreds of j Joe reasonably sure we Are fio inc Eye when he proposes a govern ment backed program of Educa Tion on the harmful effects of smoking. The teen age mind easily influenced As it is by the bad example of older people would be equally open to lectures and Reading matter prepared by qualified experts and dealing with the ill effects of cigarette 2 people in the City and surround ing municipalities under metro who Are discontented. Metro is a Little More than a year old. Yet they act As if they Are the Only administration that knows of trying to relieve of the Low income families from taxation they Are piling More on the poor individuals. All those who Art fed up with metro and its duplicate service stay w e secs o us ethime smoking on 1 the nerves j2 action Don Tel your the stomach 3 the mini and t them to sane government and rational finance. The Cost of living Index is a True Standard of the Economy. It is away up and going up All the time. This is a True indication of worsening conditions so it is up to us the voters to do what we can and vote to change our pres ent government. Winnipeg re. 4 the promotion of lung cancer which has now been proved up to the Hilt despite the heavy barrage of cigarette advertising aimed at proving that our Brand is practically harmless. Nor should we ignore the fact that such lecturers and writers As mentioned above would have the very great advantage of speaking and writing to captive audiences throughout Canada namely our entire teen age school population. It is unfortunately necessary for them to have such because the peo ple whose responsibility it is to speak out against cigarettes have been notably disinclined to do so. This reference is to Many doctors who. Because they them selves smoke feel their hands tied when it comes to counselling others to desist teachers who Are careful not to smoke on school premises but enjoy a quiet puff at Home and so would deem it hypocritical to pose As anti cigarette advocates parents who Johnny and Mary won t Start smoking too soon but hypnotic spell sir the idea of students remembering under hypnotic suggestion so they can pass an exam shows up the fact that Many people have the wrong ideas about education. First the purpose of education is to acquire knowledge and. Food for thought. If the facts they have " Learned. And Are required to remember can Only be recalled by hypnotic suggestion one doubts the value of such learning for preparing the Stu dents to take their place in the world. If the Only purpose is to pass the exam the student is being he won t be under hypnosis when be is required to make a decision that could affect his life business or family. Winnipeg h. J. Tight Corner sir in this country the politicians say that our. System of government does what is Best for the majority. Yet the government has devalued the Dollar knowing that the prices of All imported goods will go up. Also the. Government must have realized that Many businesses would use the devaluation As an excuse to raise the prices of Domestic goods. There Are a Large majority of people in this country who make very Small wages. For instance my own wages Are an hour and most of the men in my shop Are in the same position. In fact top wages Are for the fore Man. How Are we going to live there is no Hope of us getting a raise because this in t in Union shop and also it is too late to get a Union in because the Bosses would fire us. So it seems that the wage earner is in a Corner he can t get a raise to meet Ris ing costs and the costs keep Ris ing. Only the business Man Bene fits from this Deal. It looks As though we need a Man like Ken Nedy up Here. Winnipeg a. P. Open sepulchres sir May i quote psalms there is no faithfulness in their Mouth their inward part is very their Throat is an open sepulchre they flatter with their on May 24, 1959, the London news chronicle summed up the death of Secretary of state John Foster Dulles in these words in a world of hypocrisy he was Blazin Gly i wish these words could be said of every pol Council Down support your Best ability. It s up to us to preserve that which has been fought for democracy free Dom our rights. Don t let it slip through your fingers because you Are tired of this bickering or feel it s no use. As Long As there s a spark there s Hope. Don t Ever forget that. West St. Paul. Basic aim moral Challenge thank you indeed for to improve our academic position. Winn pee interested technocrats prophecy sir in 1933 the technocrats published a report on their 10-year study of North America s increasing social problem and stated among Oiler things that our Price system of commodity valuation was headed for the limbo of obsolescence. Now in 1962 the eminent economist Forbes informs us that our sacred cow is suspect scared rather than sacred and manifestly moribund. I would urge that Forbes analysis be studied with something More than supercilious urbanity. After All. Chairman Khrushchev is still fondling that menacing shovel. Winnipeg o. So Crews printing the text of the address j. L. Jones which otherwise i would t have seen. If the press of Canada and the states will respond to his dial one Lenge perhaps people begin the truth sir regarding the wheat that China purchased Canada we will As a More realistic from China was so food As the press have us believe Why did that a. Good part be from Montreal instead Vancouver and we know that people begin a More Reau Suc amount of was evaluation of the qualities and Over Eagle Germany communities. Winnipeg Paul or. Jones ethics please convey to Jenkin won l Sian suit Luau Tuu but of _ who think it is All right to Light Lloyd Jones our appreciation he after every meal. Said All the things i be longed to up after every meal. Practices which a decent people Albania and other countries Admire and respect within then basis. While China herself paid almost Cash on the line. For the past 3 weeks we have been Reading across the front pages of the mass exodus of starving chinese crossing the Border into Hong Kong including pictures of Skinny women and men with Long drawn faces most Likely taken in san Francisco and j Chuei a very Cuccu. T in England and Scotland where say for years and few More i Ash apr tires in schools stress i had t thought of but certainly Swan River Man. Iticia. A. B. Health lectures in schools stress the evils of alcohol and nicotine i should have. Splendid results have been j achieved in countering the evil effects of two of. Our world s worst habits. Winnipeg Harry w. Anderson not for lotteries sir we feel we must Correct the statement in your editorial lotteries of May 30 that the Ontario Hospital association plumped for legalized lotteries in its recent submission to the Royal commission on health services. This misunderstanding has Arisen presumably out of the original wire service Story which unfortunately misinterpreted the association s comments regard ing Hospital sweepstakes. We Hope you will permit us this Opportunity of clarifying the . S position. Our reference in the submission to municipal support for legalized sweepstakes was intended Only to emphasize the depth of concern Felt by municipalities regarding the future financing of new hos Pital facilities. We did not urge consideration of sweepstakes per be but the underlying reasons which would prompt and gain support for such a proposal. Our own. Stated recommendation to the Royal commission on the subject of Hospital financing was that these capital costs should be divided Equay Between the local Community the Federal government and the province in Stead of the Community having to Bear roughly 60% As at pre sent. In Short., the Ontario Hospital association has never advocated the legalization of sweepstakes for the purpose of Hospital financing. It is also significant that the Canadian Hospital association to which we belong expressed unanimous opposition to such proposals at its convention in Edmonton last week. S. W. Martta. Executive Secretary treasurer oat Arto Hospital association Dob Mills ont. Mrs. J. K. Spalding raw sewage sir the proposal of the Rural municipality of Charles Wood to install sewers in that municipality and then dump the raw sewage into the Assiniboine River causes a feeling of shame and outrage. This action can Only be construed As another Indica Tion of duly elected municipal other Vietnam hand the while on the Csc to news showed pictures of Happy smiling faces and to quote or. Cameron they appeared extremely Well fed contrary to previous these pictures also showed them carrying visas. And that the peking government was handing out visas on a wholesale basis most Likely to chinese catholics who do not Cotton to relinquish ing their previous wealth. Thus they Are free to leave if they feel inclined. With the great army China possesses the exodus could l1uu us Uuie representatives becoming Obses-1 have been popped easily. To Ere sed with Progress on whose will most Likely be retractions Ioto in print on the Back behalf they claim this step is to be taken. I think it is about time the people affected by this Type of Progress begin to recognize it for what it is. What some May consider Progress can also be interpreted As retrogression. It would appear that in this in stance the Only real reason for the installation of a sewer sys tem is to promote the develop ment of a few Large mocks of acreage in the municipality and to otherwise increase the popu lation and the tax Revenue through forced subdivision. The rights of the Large majority Are to be sacrificed to the Benefit of a few. As far As i can determine the residents of Charleswood like their Large lots and Many Trees and gardens. It is perhaps the Only Urban area within limits of greater Winnipeg with a Rural atmosphere. To most of the residents Progress is a Nasty word. As a resident of Charleswood i think the action of the Charles Wood Council is most irresponsible and i urge All Public spirited citizens to raise protests against the dumping of raw sew age As planned. The proper time to construct a sewer system is after the matter of sewage disposal has been solved. Metro officials Are evidently working on this matter at present. Why not wait until a master plan has been later in Fine print on the Back pages of the press. Recently mrs. Eleanor Roose velt was invited by the peking government to visit China. She was denied a visa by washing ton because they knew that she would have told the truth and there is nothing that they fear More than the truth. It is getting to a Point where one must Start Reading the Back pages of the newspapers if one wants to read a few facts. Winnipeg humanitarian. Completed mrs. Charleswood wrecked Church sir i witnessed last night a revolting sight on the newscast the destruction of a picturesque Stone Church at the Corner of Academy Road and Wellington Crescent. This Structure is Only 16 years old. Explanation to build another Church modern design with a seating capacity of 60 More than the present one. If 60 More seats were so badly needed could the Church not have been enlarged without total Demoli Tion not Only was the building wrecked but the Beautiful Oaks in front had to. Be removed to permit that monstrous wrecking machine close enough. This has shocked me even More than the vandalism in the St. John s cemetery earlier in the week which May have been the work of juveniles. No jul venue in e. M. Brazzell thus Case. Winnipeg k. M. B ;
