Production has pushed the surplus to approximately pounds about where it was dec. 31. While officials say consumer reaction to lower butter prices won t be firmly established at least until july or August so far Little substantial difference is revealed. About pounds of surplus is in butter Oil a processed form which prevents spoilage and reduces bulk for storage purposes. The process j is said to permit reconstitution j into butter. Starting May 1, the govern ment clipped Gutter prices 12 cents a Pound while continuing to give Farmers the same sup port Price return of 64 cents a Pound for top grades basis Montreal and Toronto. In effect this was a con Sumer subsidy reckoned to Cost Over a full year on the Assumption of annual butter production totalling about 000.000 pounds. Its purpose was to stimulate butter consumption dwindling steadily on a per capita and volume basis during the last few years. Margarine and spreads have been gaining at the same time enjoying a marked Price advantage. The Price Cut was expected to put retail butter prices at Levels ranging Between 56 and 59 cents across the country.
