Winnipeg free press thursday August 1, 1963 17 constipation is not As frighten ing a word to parents As it once was. Mothers know that babies have different rhythms of elimination and Are not so upset by a missed movement. They know too that nursing babies can go several Days and still have a Normal soft Stool when passed. Constipation then indicates not just a missed movement but a hard dry one. The cause of this must be sought. In most in stances the diet is at fault. Either it is inadequate in amounts for the child s whole body needs or it is Large enough to satisfy the child but lacking in some of the necessary nutritional elements. If the nursing baby is making a Good gain not too much Atten Tion needs to be paid to the num Ber of movements. The bottle baby s formula demands improvement if there is persistent constipation and one Aid May be an increase in the amount of sugar. As chronic constipation May be an allergic symptom the Type of milk May need to be changed to bring about an improvement. It is never desirable to attack this condition with physics. They Rush the contents of the intestines through and then there will be another period of constipation until there is a sufficient accumulation of waste materials to stimulate a movement. Mineral oils mop up vitamins from the intestinal tract. Suppositories and enemas Are Apt to be habit forming so that the baby Waits for them to be used. Neither should be used unless the doctor orders. After the diet has been corrected if there is still some ten Dency to constipation some of the following methods of correction should be used. The baby having fruit juices daily should have his amount of fruits increased including prune juice or prune pulp. Both Are very laxative. Lots of water is indicated and in the first water of the Day perhaps before breakfast try the juice of half a Lemon. Sweeten this if it goes Down More easily that Way. Whole Grain cereals and breads contain roughage which is helpful for constipation. Vegetables also influence this condition. A regular time for elimination will make the child accustomed to the body s urge at that time. Usually the Choice of a half hour after a meal is Good. But watch the child and note when elimination takes place daily and take him to the toilet then. Avoid any emotional display Over the child s habit. Sometimes children mistake our Zeal and actually hold Back because they think we Are displeased with what they Are doing. This is a i mistake Only the Parent can Cor i rect.
