University concert bad cheques Lead to jail Raymond Ferris 26, of 1611 main Street was sentenced to three months in jail wednesday after pleading guilty to five charges of false pretences in provincial police court. Gold is old but pure opera pops wednesday after noon the last la a series of Lour Campus concerto presented by Tho Csc in association with the University of Manitoba summer school. Erlo wild conducted the Csc we Miles orchestra Mezzo Soprano Joan was sul Olst. The operatic program comprised the overture to Mozart s the mar Lase of Figaro the intermezzo from Puccini s Manon Lescaut the aria Moo Coeur s ouvre a to vol from Saint Saens Samson and Allah the prelude to act Washer s Lohengrin two of the four sea interludes from Britten s Peter Grimes the Arlen. O Mlo Fernando from Donizetti s la Favorita Vand orchestral Eric erupts from Bizet s Carmen. By Ken Winters the last of the four summer school lunch hour concerts Given by the Csc on fort Garry Cam pus tried unabashedly for popular Success and clearly achieved it. The operatic program with its dramatic allure and its comforting familiarity attracted and pleased a very Large audience. The fare was not too fresh even by pop standards the two sea interludes from Peter Grimes be ing the Only items which might be described As even slightly off the beaten track. Delilah s aria the Figaro overture and the Lohengrin prelude provoke by now a kind of International Auto Matic response in both players and audience and the Carmen excerpts Are the musical counter part of the household word. The intermezzo from Manon Lescaut and the Donizetti aria 0 Mio Fernando Are. A Little less frequently done and a Little less Catchy therefore a Little less familiar but their kind is com Mon enough that their Challenge to the listener is Small. When All this is said How Ever and even perhaps regretted a Little on the grounds that University campuses Are not usually thought of As suitable pastures for old warhorse one thing re Mains solidly on the Side of such a program the initial and Essen tial excellence of the music. The Mozart overture and the Wagner prelude May deserve a rest but they Are matchless music All the same. The car men excerpts Are old Gold worn Gold but pure Gold. De Lilah s aria has the kind of Melody one would love to be hear ing again for the first time. And if the Donizetti aria and the Puccini intermezzo Are not quite so imperishable worthy As the rest they nevertheless get by on the same ticket. So if the music wednesday succeeded because it was All too familiar at least it was All too familiar because it was Good. Its performance was Good too. Under or. Wild the or Chestra played tidily and with a degree of enthusiasm not always evident in its purely radio performances. A live audience obviously puts it on its Mettle and stimulates its communicative instinct. To be sure there were minor flaws in its work. The violins got lost among the Bells Day morning one of the sea interludes and the Tambourine s off beats i the third Carmen excerpt were a touch too far off wild drive leads to Fine Hans Knepper 32, of 276 aus tin Street suite 3. Was fined a total of in provincial police court wednesday. Magistrate g. L. Cousley fined Knepper on a charge til furious driving and on a charge of driving with a suspended licence. Knepper was arrested july 9 after police had observed him driving at speeds up to 5.05 Miles an hour. To suit me. But generally the playing was Crisp and efficient and Solo stints by the Viola in the Puccini intermezzo and the various woodwinds in the second Carmen excerpt smugglers Cave scene were considerably More then that. Mezzo Soprano Joan Maxwell was in sumptuous voice and Sang both her Arias with professional aplomb. A rather Rusty French the second syllable of tenders be should not. Be pronounced like the first one in Raisin and the third Vowel in reviews should not be pronounced and an unfortunate tendency to sing Down to the floor boards instead of up to the High banked audience marred her Saint Saens but her Donizetti was better projected on All counts splendidly audible and dramatically Strong.
