Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 3, 1963, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press saturday August 3, 1963 15 fire sirens frighten tots dear mrs. Eldred May i suggest a possibility As to Why a child might have the fear of heat going on. Two of my child Ren went through the phase of being afraid of the noise made by fire sirens. When the second began to show fear i thought i d just have to wait until he outgrew it but the older boy came up with the solution. He told us How he had thought the firemen started the fires. This seemed logical since the Milkman brings the milk and the mailman the mail Why not the fireman the fire we made quite an Issue of what the fireman did How and Why and his fear of sir ens was soon Over. Perhaps this other youngster had acquired his fear through some such erroneous connection. Sometimes we dig too deeply into the Why of fears and ignore the loud noises so Many fears Are related in some Way to the Basic fear of loud noises. It is quite natural for a child to. Be afraid of the sound of a fire Siren particularly if it is dose. He outgrows such fears not by concentrating on the Siren but by explanations such As yours As to what it Means. The other child who was afraid of the heat going on May have been frightened by the sound of the Furnace Blower or the expansion and contraction of the heat pipes which occasionally make a booming sound sometimes the noise which triggers the fear is completely unrelated. The vacuum is turned on while the child is playing with some object and his association of the noise to the play thing makes the toy the fearful thing. Children Are frightened by Thi sounds during a bad storm by they usually do not continue being afraid unless parents show fear in front of them. All of us Are startled by sudden loud noises but our reaction can make it seem like a game or a joke. Jump say Boom or imitate some other frightening sound. Soon the child will do the same. Don t Force whatever the fear he should not be ridiculed or forced to face up to the fearsome object until he is ready to do so. Don l Force him to stay in the room when using the vacuum sweeper if he screams when it is turned on. I know one Little boy who ran and hid when his Mother swept the floor. She did not try to talk him out of his fear bul warned him and suggested he play in his room and close the door when she was cleaning. Now at he enjoys nothing More than using the noisy Mach Ine himself. Most of such fears Are Aniag Inary As the objects or occurrences feared Are not dangerous. When nothing unpleasant happens and others around him accept these everyday noises the child becomes less fearful in their presence. Many children suffer child Hood fears.
