During the europ Ean tour the 19-member Manitoba group headed by Premier Roblin and Industry minister Gurney Evans visited 11 West Ern european countries. On their return Mission Mem Bers published a handbook list ing sales opportunities for Manitoba goods in Europe. The National youth orchestra does nine hours of rehearsal daily on lie stage of the concert Hall in the Edward Johnson building of the University of Toronto in preparation for a strenuous concert tour of Western cities. They will be appearing in the Winnipeg auditorium at . Tuesday. National youth orchestra visits West for first time the 1963 National youth or Chestra is scheduled to arrive in Winnipeg monday on the first part of its two week tour of West Ern Canada. The orchestra will open its tour with a concert at the Winnipeg auditorium tuesday night. This is the first time the highly rated orchestra will be heard Saturn shines through night by James Stokley three and possibly four plan ets will be visible on August evening although Only one is shown on the accompanying maps. These show the skies As they looked about 11 . Cd at aug. 1, and an hour earlier in the Middle. Saturn which shines with a brilliance equal to a Bright first magnitude Star appears in the Southeast in the Constellation of capricorns the sea Goat. It is considerably brighter than any Star in that part of the sky so you should find it easy to identify. It rises about Sunset and sets about Sunrise. By about Midnight cd aug. 1, Jupiter appeared above the Eastern horizon. It was about 13 times As Bright As Saturn and in the Constellation of Pisces the fishes. One Star in this group is our map but this is not the part of the Constellation in which Jupiter stands. Mars which is far away and Dun like a second magnitude Star is now part of Virgo. At the beginning of August it sets a Little More than two hours after the Sun so it is hard . As it draws nearer the Sun in the following weeks it will disappear from View completely for a time. On August 24 Mercury will be at greatest Eastern elongation i which Means that it remains j above the Western horizon for a Little while after Sunset. How Ever this will not be a favourable time to see it. The brightest Star visible on August evenings is Vega in Lyra the Lyre directly overhead at the time for which the maps Are drawn. Directly East of Lyra is cygnus the Swan shown partly on the Southern sky map partly on the Northern. In it is the Bright Star called Deneb. South of cygnus is the interest ing Little Constellation of Sagitta the Arrow and then the Large one of Aquila the Eagle. Altair is the Bright Star in this group. To Gether with Vega and Deneb Al Tair makes a Large Triangle that is characteristic of the summer evening skies. Two other constellations that Are typical of summer Are visible Low in the South Sagittarius the Archer and Scorpius the scorpion. In the latter you see the Brilliant red Star Antares. Toward the Northwest is the familiar great dipper which is actually part of major the great Bear. At the Bottom of the dipper Are the two stars known As the pointers. A line extended through them upwards and to the right comes to Polaris the pole Star which is always in the North. By following the curve made by the dipper s handle to the left another Star of the first magnitude Arcturus in bootes the Herdsman can be located. Celestial Ture table aug. Since its foundation in 1960, the orchestra has Given concerts in Toronto Montreal Ottawa Stratford and Buffalo new York. The orchestra is made up of 92 players this year representing the Cream of Young Canadian Talent from eight provinces. Eight of the players Are from Manitoba. Following traditional lines the orchestra is composed of Vio Lins 11 violas 100 cellos 6 basses 15 woodwinds 12 brass 4-per Cus zionists and one hard. The orchestra will be led by Walter Susskind of the Toronto symphony orchestra one of the leading conductors in Canada and the Man responsible for the formation of the Nyo. The orchestra s repertoire this years includes Brahms sym phony no. 1 Shostakovich. Sym phony no. 1 Weber Der Freis c h u t z overture Kaba Levsky Colas Breugnon overture Kodaly Harry Janos suite hoist the planets Wagner prelude to act 3 of Lohengrin Somers Lyric. From Winnipeg the orchestra travels to Saskatoon where it will perform August 8. Other concerts will be Given at Edmonton a gust-9, Calgary August 10, Van Couver August 13 and Victoria August 14. The Nyo was formed in 1960 after Walter Susskind heard the Success Story of the National youth orchestra of great Britain. A group of interested citizens took up his idea and formed the Nyo association a non profit organization to promote it. The aim of the association is to teach talented Young instrumentalists to play under proves mystery object London the second night in succession scores of people telephoned the air ministry and the bbl thurs Day night to report a myster ious triangular shaped object seen in the sky Over London and nearby counties. Over 200 screened applicants auditioned for the orchestra this year. Audition ers try to determine the potential of the applicant As Well As the present ability. The tour this year was pre ceded by four weeks of intensive training in Toronto. Orchestra members worked under the guid Ance of a group of leading North american musicians engaged by the Nyo association. Prof. Green and his 18 project workers Here have located school age negro children in Prince Edward county who do not have schools to go to. The closed Public schools now Bear signs school property no trespassing under penalty of Law. Prince Edward county school door boarded at nearby Prospect one of six Rural districts in the Prince Edward county school system the front door of the school is boarded up and desks Are piled in an adjoining maintenance building. In Prospect the volunteers Are running a Branch of their summer school program. Alto Gether about 500 youngsters Are showing up for the informal classes in the county seat of Farmville and at the Rural branches. The negro youngsters come on Sticky hot summer Days and sit on hard Church pews for school sessions from 9 a a. To 1 . The Volunteer teachers 17 Stu dents from Queen s College and 19 professional teachers from new York City try to give them a Brief glimpse of school. I noticed that some boys were just sitting and staring at me in class the first said Leonard Hausman a 20-year old economics major. It took a while to realize i just was t getting through to them. Taciturn Many of these kids come from families who Don t talk he observes. They re out in the Fields All Day. Their parents Only talk to them to give them directions. They grow up in a non verbal world except for schools. They have lost much More than just four years of schooling. In school you spend a lot of time in the first years getting attuned to others and learning to follow directions and working in groups of 35 or of the negro children of school age found in Prince Edward county 269 were attend ing school outside the county at the time the families were contacted in May. Of the More than had not had any for formal schooling since 1959. The surveyors found negro children who were in class in 1959, when the schools closed. The youngsters 10 years and younger were not attending classes obviously because there were no schools to go to time limited of these youngsters Only 25------5.6 per cent have been Able to get their regular four years of schooling by go ing away to attend classes out Side the county. Some 448 negro Young sters have done this but most of them have just been Able to attend classes a year or two away from Home. More than half of those not in school have been just around the interviewers discovered. In answer to questions 81.4 per cent said they wanted to return to school if the schools were reopened in Prince Edward county. Most of the no returns were among those in the 17-to-22 year old age bracket included because they would have been in school classes in the four year closed most of the older pupils. Prof. Green Points out feel they Are now too big for school and face the need to work to help their families make a living.
