The Experiment with paper Caps jackets and aprons will be carried out in one Ward As part of a 12-month trial that will be working fully at Acton this autumn. The annual report of the hos Pital fund says that the Large scale use in one Hospital of up to 170 different items now offer red by manufacturers is the Only Way of deciding whether such changes Are helpful or economic. Acton Hospital has 100 Beds. Many disposable coverings utensils and containers have the advantages of reducing infection and. Saving Money particularly where it is possible to eliminate laundering altogether but the fund is already doubtful about some of the items that Are being tried. Or. M. C. Hardie Deputy director of the Hospital Centre who is controlling the Experiment said we Are very dubious about the advantages of disposable paper blankets for instance. They were developed in Scandinavia and Are intended to be used for a patient s average stay which is about 12 Days but we Are finding that the blankets Start shredding after a bed has been made a few times. To prevent this the blankets have to be kept inside a Cotton cover which of course has to be washed and that rather makes nonsense of the the Hospital will also be trying out disposable crockery and Cut Lery including plastic knives that make washing up and dry ing unnecessary. Or. Hardie said throwing away tableware after every meal May prove too expensive and the knives Are not As Sharp As we would like. Most of the other ideas that Are being carried out in this Experiment have been used elsewhere and the real in Novation is their use in bulk.
