Stampedes have revenge in hearts by Hal Calgary staff be a noisy at Mcmahon stadium Whert Winnipeg Blue bombers stampedes meet in their West Ern football conference opener. Fans Here in Calgary Are still slightly piqued Over the hooting and hollering that came from the Winnipeg stadium stands during last year s Western conference final. You May recall How stadium patrons shattered their reputations for stodgy silence More than somewhat As they uttered loud rude noises every time Calgary quarterback Eagle Day stepped the Ball. Day likes to change signals at the line of scrimmage and Winnipeg fans thought they d do their bit for the bomber cause by making so much noise no one could hear themselves think. Certainly the memory is vivid in Calgary. And just in Case it had slipped any one s mind local radio stat ions have been playing port ions of last year s broadcast the ones emphasising the noise. Retaliation is not unlikely. In the meantime the stamp eders themselves Are still having bad dreams about the finals last plays. Calgary led 7-6 and Winnipeg tried a Field goal from roughly 20 Yards out. The kick was wide of the Mark but into the end zone when Harvey Wylie tried to kick the Ball out it slithered off the end of his Boot and into the waiting arms of Winnipeg and Farrell Funston. On that single play the bom Bers Rode into the Grey cup Fin Al an occasion they utilized to score a dramatic 28-27 Victory Over the Hamilton Tiger cats. Calgary meanwhile returned to the wailing Wall to await their Chance for revenge. Chance one arrives tonight. Of Toronto argonauts and Frank Clair of Ottawa rough riders expressed interest in adding Etcheverry to their lineups. 3. Commissioner g. Sydney Halter of the Cal reiterated that Montreal has first claim to Etcheverry if he crosses Border. The Veteran quarterback left cardinals because he Felt he was passed Over in the club s first full length Serif Utnage Dur ing the weekend. He had been with cardinals 2v4 years rarely achieving the Heights he reached with Mont real. He was bothered with Arm trouble in his first season at St. Louis but still completed nearly 100 passes for Yards and 14 touchdowns. The next season he was benched after Only four games and Charley Johnson took Over cards quarterback ing. Denver May try there was speculation in Montreal monday that Denver of the Al May go after etch every now but Workman emphasized that the Cal has never lost sight of its former hero. We think the Cal has been anxious to get Sam Back for some Workman said. He had sent out feelers twice late last year about the possibility of Etcheverry being Cut. With Montreal Etcheverry had been one of the most Dur Able attractions in Canadian football history. He tossed 183 touchdown passes completed passes or 64 per cent of his throws and gained 381 league records. When Workman announced out of the Blue in november 1960, that Etcheverry and end Hal Patterson were being traded to Hamilton in return for quarterback b e r n i e Faloney and end Don Paquette Etche Verry walked. After the briefest of talks with Hamilton Etcheverry bolted across the Border claim ing a no Cut no Trade agree ment with Alou ettes had been broken he signed with St. Louis and nil commissioner Pete Rozelle okayed the Deal. Denounced Deal Halter denounced it As a o m i e t e repudiation of agreements Between the leagues to Honor each other s contracts. Halter said that when Etche Verry refused to go along with the Trade the Trade was off and Etcheverry was still the property of the Montreal Halter emphasized again Mon Day that the Rifle could Only return to the Montreal club in Canada but he knew of no Rea son Why Etcheverry could not come Back to Canada. Halter s words put a Damper on Toronto coach Wirkowski who cent off a Hasty notification to Halter that if Etcheverry were found to be a free agent in Canada Toronto wanted him on its negotiation list.
