22 Winnipeg thee press saturday August 10, 1963 the saturday Section Short Story needed someone to give him he had t so jobs As never. Really found them nor Ever found his proper place in them. He lived in a continual worry that what he was doing was unsatisfactory and in trying to imagine All the various dressing Downs that might be Given him by anyone in a position of authority Over him which was everybody he found he never had time to finish anything. When Sam said As a London Post office clerk he had had queues 10 to 15 people Long when trying to hold the fort in the lunch hour until the locals got to know him and did not come to him at All and this did not please the other clerks. As a grocer s had taken so Long wrapping everything up that the women customers got to scream ing Point watching him patiently folding Over and Over and Sticky taping and tying Little knots and making Little piles of packages. So he passed gently and submissively through the jobs of shoe Salesman Park attend ant gasoline pump attendant and cleaner upper in a big help yourself restaurant. And now he was a Porter at an underground station and it did not seem As though this Job was going to last any longer than the others. In fact the station master had Only just managed to per Suade him that to shout mind the doors was More effective than gently murmuring excuse me but if you Don t mind i think you d better try and squeeze up a bit More otherwise you jump. By Peter Whitbread Sam listened amazed to his own voice the Kitchen. You re Alice appeared red and Beefy in contrast to the plate of Grey hotpot she slopped Down in the table. Sam pleated. I i had to stay late and make a May find yourselves in rather a painful position when the doors to the two or three people nearest him but the weakness of his shouts seemed Likely to lose him this Job As Well. The main trouble of course was Alice. As his wife she should have been a prop to his sagging self Confidence but instead she was always getting at him for his Meek Ness nagging at him try and get a Little go in you you Don t want to let them Boss you so much you be about As much Back Bone As a tired and on the rare occasions when they went out for a lunch together or to the movies she would apologize for him in a loud voice when he could t find the tickets or dropped his change All Over the floor. At Home she looked after him but very much on suf Ferance in a Way she was As miserable As she made Sam and every Day when she Ord ered him out of his chair to dust round it or made him do he washing up she secretly loped he would Tell her to Ake a running jump at her self but of course he never did. One night Sam was on late duty. The trains rumbling through got fewer and fewer and Sam began to Brush Down the platform sweeping an evening s refuse into a Heap by the bins. Suddenly the station Mas Ter appeared followed by two men in Plain clothes. He showed disappointment when he saw Sam and started to turn away but men said we one of can fix the the sound thing is a Neutral accent a voice that does t sound unpleasantly the station master said you la get that All and to Sam come on up to the office a moment will Sam followed them up the escalator and into the office where a tape recorder was plugged on the big desk with a microphone near it the station master explained we re making a new recording for the lift and one of the Young men interrupted just speak quietly but firmly into the microphone stand Clear of the doors " Sam looked worried. Just try it a couple of times then Well take half a dozen and use the Sam did As he was asked. Though the first two at empty were dismal a certain degree of gentle firmness had crept into his voice by the Ime he got to the last one. He had hardly opened lie door when that you came stridently from Alice snapped pay you for it did and they Sam i sex but Alice crashed started. I Don t know pet. On Don t know Don t know you should have made Sam gulped hopefully this Stew s very but Alice interrupted again. It s horrible and you know it. No one but a weak kneed nit like you would put up with and so she went on till she got hoarse As usual and the storm died away in intermit tent grumblings. Three Days later Sam was standing on his platform when he heard a vaguely familiar sound coming from the direction of the lifts. Stand Clear of the incredulous Sam realized that it was his voice commanding reson ant that dared the crowds to disobey its repeated rom mands. He watched fascinated. A heaving crowd discharged itself from a train and moved towards the lifts then part of it jammed inside. Then the voice Sam s voice stand Clear of the those nearest the doors on the inside obediently crushed inwards. One big Broad Shoul dered Workman outside slipped in guiltily then the doors thudded shut. Sam stayed there hypnotized for a Long time before he finally blinked and came to a train Drejd in at the adjoining platform and its doors opened. Sam waited cleared his Throat then i ind your he yelled. Hurry along there a dozen people jumped to the command before the doors clumped shut Sam squared his shoulders turned towards the escalator and made his Way Home. He marched into the tiny front Hall slamming the door behind surged out of the Kitchen How Many Sam raised his hand braced himself and said be quiet she jumped but recovered what did you i said be and he added. What s for Alice stuttered Well there s an old piece of. Sam stopped her. Never mind i fancy a mixed1 Grill anyway. Bacon liver sausage egg and All the trimmings and if you Haven t got them Down the the self service Road s open till eight. Come on now Bustle Alice stood gaping at him. Then stepping up to her he put his arms round her As far As they would go and planted a great kiss on her nearest Cheek then stood Back blinking and smacked her smartly on the Bottom. Amazingly she giggled fat by i be been wanting you to do that for she said and rolled Rosy with pleasure out of the front door. Sutton the magnificent Muskie Seldom does a group of local fishermen gather without engaging in a Little altercation Over the status of the Muskel lunge in our province. Inevitably some member of the group often a Veteran Angler will insist that the great mus Kies Are Here and have been caught Many times. Do we actually have these magnificent fighting fish with in our Borders until 1958 the answer would have to be until that time All the Muscles submitted for examination turned out to be Large Pike. Then on july 4, 1958, Bill Roberts of Indian Bay changed the Pic Ture. Fishing in Indian Bay half mile inside the Manitoba Boundary or. Roberts hooked and landed the first Muskel lunge recorded in Manitoba. I believe the prize weighed in at some 25 pounds thus qualifying not Only As a Manitoba but As a Fine trophy eligible for Manitoba s famed master. Angler award. This then was our first official Muskie. But the picture now is rapidly changing and we have our Alert and Active fisheries Branch to thank for bringing yet another Fine game fish to Manitoba. During the summer of 1962 the Branch planted Muskellunge Fry in Beautiful Lake Duck Mountain Forest Reserve. These fish were brought in from Quebec. Now this year Manitoba is Richer by a further Young mus Kies. Of these once again went into Beautiful Lake while the other potential bunkers were used to Stock Lake Audy in Riding Mountain National Park. These muskies came from Ontario and their arrival in our province is another Shin ing example of the Good will and co operation Between our provincial fisheries people the _ Ontario department of lands and forests and the Canadian wildlife service. The Muskellunge shown in our illustration is the big fighting Cousin of our North Ern Pike. As a Rule it can be distinguished by its markings usually a series of dark ver tical bars on a Silvery Back ground. This has Given Rise to the name Tiger Muskie muskies Are More thick set than our Pike and attain much greater size. Muskellunge in excess of 50 pounds have frequently been taken and to qualify for a master anglers award a Muskie must weigh not less than 20 pounds.
