Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 10, 1963, Winnipeg, Manitoba 26 Winnipeg free press. Saturday August 10, 1963 no fun for Tim or Sally i sir in the july 31 free press Avrum Rosner advances the View that the new method of teaching Reading is Best because it is new and the old phonic method is no 1 Good because it is old. Is this a valid philosophy it is an indisputable fact that the old method got re j suits. There Are limitless sex i Amples of its Efficacy since j most of the adult population j of Canada Learned by it. I Avrum Rosner says it is tedious to Progress from letter to letter group to i word to phrase is it any less tedious to Progress from i a Reading readiness study of shapes to monotonous monologues such As this is fun for Tim. It is not fun for spot. This is fun for spot. It is not fun for Sally. This is fun for spot. It is not fun for puff. The above appears on Page two of the think and do Book and is just a random example. The Book holds Many More. Avrum Rosner also states the new method produces Quick readers. It seems to me that these children recite from memory in a stunned state induced by the material ingested. Moreover what is the use of Speed without accuracy i can think of no business profession or skill where Speed is of More importance than precision. Whether a person wishes to be a swimmer or a surgeon he must learn the first Steps slowly and thoroughly. Most humans crawl then walk be fore they run. Is learning to read the exception this correspondent says English is not a phonetic language but neither is it a language of pictures. If you wish to be a Purist Avrum Rosner show me a picture of is or show me How to recognize by its form the difference Between neither and either not and now. My old fashioned logic tells me that there Are no Miracle methods and the sensible Way to Progress is to retain the test of the old while accept ing the new. Surely the phonic and sight methods of Reading must each have Vir tues which combined would produce the Best method yet. My logic tells me too that neither living nor learning is a mathematical equation to be solved by scientists. Mrs s. M. Cheop Winnipeg pioneers now i Indian schools g sir reference is made to h miss Dexter s article of july g 31 entitled indians Lack g sound school miss Dexter has now made it Clear to Indian affairs that is she was not referring to h schools operated by this Dell apartment and this letter is g therefore intended to Correct g any false impression that May g have been left with the Public. During the More severe periods of the teacher shortage we along with numerous i other school systems were compelled to engage some unqualified teachers but now that the Supply of teachers is 1 improving we Are Able to be More selective. The staff of 246 which will open our schools in september is now almost Complete lacking i Only four teachers. To this Date Only one unqualified applicant has been accepted and he is a former staff member who plans to attend teacher s i College next year. Three unqualified teachers Are being retained for at least one More year on the grounds that they have demonstrated an above average aptitude for class room work. In regard to miss Dexter s comments on salary i would Point out that effective last september staff with a com plete Grade 12 and one year of teacher training Are remunerated at a minimum rate of for the first 10 months of service. I say mini mum because those appointed to Northern posts also draw allowances ranging from to per month. In the majority of cases this allowance is per month for single staff and per month for married personnel. In addition travelling expenses Are paid for personnel appointed to Northern posts. The Indian schools system has been developing in a very satisfactory manner during re cent years but unfortunately there is frequently a consider Able time lapse Between accomplishments and Public awareness thereof. F. J. Foss District superintendent Edmonton of Indian Alberta schools. Sir last fall i clipped the letter new 60 homesteader from the free press intending to write. Reading it was like listen ing to myself our feelings and ambitions. The Only Dif Ference is that they have set their worldly goods on the Forest floors several years be fore us. Well finally make it Spring. Right now we Are living out in the Woods while my husband logs Money to Salt away for our ranch. The government gave us the of on the 400 acres of Crown land we found truly god s country. I d live in a tent if it was the Only Way to get there. I m used to inconveniences i be adjusted to it quite nicely out Here in the Woods. We gave up a House in town and a Job with great Security much to the disgust of Many since we have seven Chil Dren to look after. I know it May be much tougher than i be known As yet starting from scratch. But after years of waiting for this Chance and working to Ward it we can t lose. I do Hope this letter reaches new homesteader 60 we have so much in common. Lots of Luck for their future. Homesteader 64, . Quesnel . Ghost cars sir i be been Reading in the free remarks on ghost cars. I think it is a smart idea on the part tit the police department it is High time something was done to Stop these fools who drive Down our highways at a High rate of Speed. To make mat ters More serious the major Ity of them Are drinking while driving. Just go Down your highways after a week end and see the whiskey and Beer bottles thrown in the ditches and on the highways. It is Fine while the mountie cars Are All marked so As to give these people a Chance to slow Down and drive normally Only to Start up again once the uniformed police have passed him. I live on no. 1 Highway and i see it every Day. Any citizen who has a brain in his head would realize that the police forces Are doing this to protect the people. It is a serious business and when one sees the accidents and the sufferings that result one should understand that some thing has to be done to Stop it All. If a person drives care fully and obeys the Law As he should a police car will not bother him marked or unmarked. Our police Are out to protect us it is up to us to help them do this. When a ghost car bothers a citizen he must be guilty of something. I say drive properly and Don t worry about your ghost cars they will not bother you Only the fools who should be taken off the Road for Good. Not afraid Headin Giey tub shrubs indeed sir i was out of the City when or. Benum s tree sur vey report was published and seconded by or. Bonnycastle somewhat belatedly i would like to Register a loud pretest in defence of our Lovely Trees. When is metro going to Stop Wheeling twisting and schem ing in order to chop away our Beautiful greenery and re place it with Cement. So the Trees Haven t got dutch Elm disease which metro hoped now the Trees should have open spaces and Freedom from a chemically polluted what about All us humans we re living in the same polluted atmosphere. Are we headed for jmr., Benum s slow sure death also when the grass starts dying on the boulevards Well worry about his so called "chemical1 he also Richard Bonnycastle a hard Green a bad act fanciful Cost sir May i comment on your report that the Cost of maintaining army troops for the Protection of negro student James Meredith at the University of Mississippi ran to about this report is a lot of the army has to be kept somewhere. The Only extra expense is transportation. All other expenses have to be paid wherever the army is. Winnipeg s. Hall sir there has been in the past few months Many articles on the licencing of radio and to repairmen but none have commented on the real facts of this controversial act. It is difficult to understand How it was possible for the Manitoba government to pass this ridiculous piece of legis lation on the recommendation of the labor department and the electronic Guild. The act states that a person must have three years practical experience in the servicing of radio and television equip ment. What about the Man who has Only been in business one year or the Young Man who has just completed a radio and television course at a Trade school or those engaged in the repair of complicated radar and Allied equipment who. Work in Indus trial jobs none of these com ply with the regulations be cause of Lack of practical experience. Does this mean that the Man already in business is to be closed Down the Young Man not allowed to open a new business of his own or the Man working on complicated radar equipment in an Industrial Job not be Al Lowed to repair radio and television equipment under the regulations this is exactly what it Means. These men will have to gain their three years experience under a licenced radio and television repair Man according to the act. It would appear that this act was not made to protect the As the electronic Guild would like everyone to believe but Only to eliminate Competition and cause a sur Pius of cheap labor for those already fortunate enough to be now in a licenced business. Also does writing an examination prove whether a Man is qualified or not How Many persons Well qualified in their chosen profession could write and pass an Examina Tion if so forced we have Many in the electronic Field who have pioneered the ser vice Industry but would be unable to answer written questions. They could be specialists doing one particular Job. The examinations now being written could not possibly cover them or qualify them for their Job. Unfortunately Many servicemen did not bother to read the licencing regulations available to All from the Queen s Printer. The act is full of loopholes and was evidently drawn up by persons who knew Little about the electronic Trade they were trying to regulate. For example one Section of the act reads no persons shall service or repair radio or television equipment normally used for Domestic purpose Only unless he holds an electronic equipment ser Viceman s this leaves the act wide open for various interpretations. What is Domestic Are tvs and radios used in motels factories restaurants Etc. Domestic Are car radios two Way Mobile radios sound equipment Etc. Domestic what is equipment in the Trade it would be test equipment. To and radio men work on television and radio sets not test equipment. The to radio licencing act is a piece of undemocratic legislation that has no place in our free society. The government would be Wise to con duct a Survey a Survey that covers All aspects of the elec tronic Industry to see if this ast As it now stands is War ranted. Surely it was not the intention of the present government to cause hardship and unemployment to the elec tronic Industry. With this act now on the books one wonders what they will think of next Winnipeg Peter Gamble states All progressive cities recognize the importance of Trees and have departments for planting pruning and removing does he think we re a lot of Hill billys Well support a department for planting run my and removing dead Trees but we do not a Slaugh Ter House to remove our Arbory in Masse Many Many years ago these Trees were planted with Loving care and an Eye to the future and should so remain until they 1 no longer serve their purpose 1 r which is to Grace our ave Nues and provide a Lovely Cooling Shade. Or. Benum also suggests Trees be planted in tubs and placed on the. Sidewalks so the Centre strips can be painted Green. To this like to say there s something definitely wrong with Mem Bers of a governing body when with a snap of a Finger i and a change of mind they i plan to throw away thousands i of dollars in taxpayers Mon j by without batting an Eye. Portage Avenue Centre i strip was remodelled not Long ago and new Trees were Plant i de. They be hardly had time 1 to get safely rooted when i they propose to tear them out i and replace them with tub 1 shrubs. If they want to play 1 around with tubs let them be placed on streets that have i no Trees. When it comes to i removing the Trees every 1 fall How ridiculous can he i get maybe he d like to 1 spread a Tarpaulin Over the s whole City. Some of us he s mans would also like a Little Protection from the severe s cold. Well never have a City s with a personality of its own s if we allow such clods to Hack s away our natural tree growth a and replace them with shrubs a that can t stand our climate. G i too like playing games of so now i would like to make a suggestion. I d like or. Benum s and or. Bonny Castle s Pkt res taken in a tub and placed in the Chil Dren s colouring books along with these words tub and dub dub two too Busy is in a flub. Color them red in the face which they should be after that kindergarten re then take them from this polluted atmosphere out into the wide wide open spa Ces and paint them leave our Trees alone and they la put or. Benum to shame. Profiles eve science by Patrick Gate Thomas Huxley it is interesting to note How Many great scientists these "pr0ffles" have had her of them and he became a Mem Ber of the Royal society when Only 26 Abl he called a and that is prob most but was a Pale Otolo Gist a zoology a sociologist and even a theologis of sorts in fact his interests had no boundaries although he never went to school As a boy and was left Tel t hf811 6arly age is own device con chiefly of indulging his passion for Reading when he was 14, he decided his in life was to make and after studying Medicine at Charing Cross Hospital in London Huxley went on a cruise As ship s doctor he advantage of the Opportunity to study he and is description of simple sea creatures later proved Valu Able m knowledge of the division of cells Winnipeg a. L. B. Those who have Tonia a at the Beach James Meredith a right defended cats too to each sir or. Stanley Knowles my in a letter to the press made this statement in regard to an increased allowance to old age pensions i strongly believe the increase should have been provided immedi now let us consider for a moment How sincere the above statement sounds. All members of parliament gave to themselves an in crease in their indemnity not a reasonable or modest in crease in my opinion it was a wicked increase. I am firmly convinced and i am sure that Many of or. Knowles supporters must feel convinced1, that All or. Knowles and his group had to do was to say to or. Pear son we support no increase until the More needy the old age pensioner is taken care there would have been no hesitation no delay All hands would have gone up in the Light of such an Opportunity in the hands of the nip. One can Only think it was greed and selfishness that blinded or. Knowles and his party to the plight of the old age pensioners. Winnipeg Charles e. Sir i disagree with the or. Bennett who wrote you to say that cat licensing is wrong. Both cats and dogs should have licences As should the pigeons that Fly Over your roof. I think All animals belong on the farm where they could have their Freedom. I would like to have a cow but i have a Good idea what my neigh Bors would say seeing a cow tied up in my Back Yard but that would be More than peo ple do with their dogs or cats. What does or. Bennett mean cats do none of these things my Sandbox stinks so much by morning that the kids hate to play in it. I think cats Are just As dirty As dogs. Let people sleep at night and not Chase cats pretty Well All night. I think doing away with cats and dogs in the City would make it a cleaner and healthier place to live. I would rather get rat Poison to kill rats than keep cats and bother the it would be different if people who have cats or dogs would keep them in their own Yard. But How Many do i am for cat licences All the Way. A housewife Winnipeg Mimi Iii sir not Long ago i read an article which stated that the police at grand Beach and grand Marais had the each under control. You can imagine my sur prise and disgust when my wife three children and i went to bed on saturday night aug. 3 and were kept awake till 4 , by a Bunch of hoodlums and their girl friends singing swearing racing motors blasting horns right in the Street. And the police no sign of them. Sunday night we thought we d catch up on lost sleep. But no the same thing happened again till in the morning. Still no sign of our police Force the next morning some of the noise makers were Wash ing themselves with soap at the pump where we take our drinking water. Last year that was. Strictly prohibited. This proves that most of these people Don t even have a place to sleep and Are there just to cause trouble. And nobody has the courage to Stop them. If those two no parking signs Between 10 . And 8 . That were put up at government pier where the better cottages Are Are what they Call having control then i say the hoodlums Are the ones that have control and the sooner somebody reminds the police what their Job is the better it will be for everybody except those troublemakers. And the Law will once More be respect tact. Winnipeg disgusted Tonia a sir since there Are usually at least two sides to any controversy i should like to answer fair play with the facts about camping at Toni Ata Beach. All trailer lots Are unshaded since there Are no Shade Trees in the trailer area. The shaded or tree areas Are reserved for tent ing outfits. So far this season there has never been an occasion when any camper with either a trailer or tent has been re fused accommodation. The provincial government has provided that there will be adequate facilities for transit or Short duration camping and to this Date these facilities have not been refused to anyone. As far As the seasonal campers Are concerned the provincial government has also decided that the Only of distribution of seasonal lots for tents or trailers is first come first Choice. Tonia a Beach is supported in part at least by a very Fine group of seasonal Camp ers year after year these1 campers do not have any More than fair play can have for the asking. The Camp is Well looked after by the local Ranger and his efforts Are very much appreciated. With these facts in mind i would suggest that fair play come out in Early May and stand in line like the rest of us and Reserve his spot for the season. Sir As a Small wage earner and overburdened tax payer and i have the right to squawk about the increase our maps so handsomely and quickly voted themselves. Strange that it should take months to Grant an increase for old age pensioners. In my opinion maps Las councillors aldermen and school trustees never had it so easy. Money will not improve the calibre of those presently governing they Are in office solely for their own selfish interests except May be for the Odd one otherwise they would not have voted themselves such outrageous increases knowing thousands cannot afford the taxes we Are burdened with today. Now there is another round of increases for civic employees and to follow no doubt will be the firemen and policemen who already have excellent salaries fringe benefits Good holidays and Security. What More do these selfish people want and will i there never be an end to it i adding insult to injury we i Tiave the welfare people say i ing the Public have a moral i obligation to keep the people i on welfare Idle getting More 1 Money than Many workers. How about a Royal commis i Sion which is the fashion to i Day to look into the Many i abuses that Are occurring. 1 i would suggest All maps i give up of then in crease and Rich people get 1 Ting old age pensions All do 1 Nate it to the welfare depart 1 ment in their respective Cit 1 ies for some of us May As 1 Well give up struggling and 1 join the crowd. Winnipeg Reader g f the liveries i champions of darwinian s of evolution after spending several years adopting and rejecting various theses of other theories of evolution then current. The publication in 1859 of Darwin a orig of species was As dramatic a moment in his own life As it was in the history of scientific thought Many people insisted upon be p to behev6d my were from Mon when a Clergyman asked Huxley in a Public meeting 3 1" Dant monkeys Huxley retorted he d rather have a Monkey for an ancestor than a Bishop Foley s 3ttitude toward Region banged. The vote is reported to have gone against the Union 245 to m because the polling workers had been swayed by editorials in the local paper radio announce ments and Public statements by the employer. In this Case the newspaper has it seems dear helped the com Pany win its objective no Union. Such forceful Aid to management by press and radio will make Juicy ammunition for those wishing to discredit news Media As a whole when issuing propaganda to Union members. In my experience Here when similar elections have Beav held both sides have usually refrained from comment when required to keep quiet. Naturally being in a City where there Are two competitive newspapers Winnipeg Gers enjoy a fair news up despite periodical statements to the contrary from some unionists. Alas Orangeburg unionists Are not blessed it with such a situation. Orangeburg daily a Community population of according to the latest census.
