Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 10, 1963, Winnipeg, Manitoba Auto of. A pastoral counsellor writes women s double talk insults selves and pastor by Rev. H. H. W. Egler one of the most difficult things in the study of different languages is the proper translation of idiomatic expressions which can not be translated word for word because it does not convey in the translation the same ing that it has in the original Tongue. Hebrew and greek Idio Matic expressions have made the translation of certain phrases most difficult to other languages. Translate into As difficult As it May be to translate properly from one Lan Guage to another there is no thing so difficult to understand As women s double talk. Of course women understand it be cause they All speak it much to the amazement of the male. I suppose it s almost As difficult for the female of the species to understand the straight for Ward language of the male too because i have heard woman after woman say i wonder what he meant by after some very simple straightforward statement that should have left no doubt for anyone As to what was meant. As a pastor i have Learned from Long experience to sort of get the hang of it by the trial and error method. During my ministry i have had officers of the ladies societies Tell me and the ladies of the society that they not want to be re elected to office. However when one found that she was not re elected she tear fully informed me she was through with the organization be cause she Felt they not like her anymore. What she had really meant when she said she t want to be re elected was that she wanted to be re elected. I have listened with Awe As some ladies passed out compliments which sounded so Beautiful to the average Man listening but they could completely annihilate the person supposedly complimented by the Subtle sarcasm. For example Here is a Dandy. My dear you look just charming tonight and your dress is divine. You look As Young and charming in it tonight As you at your daughter s wedding As you might expect the insulted woman was As Quick to get the Point and to return the com lament with something As kind and appropriate. This is what is known As a Back handed compliment while readily discernible to every woman men have a hard time detecting it. Unfortunately As a Man through my Asci Attoh with women in these various ladies organizations i have come to understand their idiomatic double talk and have come to realize that some of the Fine compliments they pay the is just As insulting. Its rather times when i Are clerical forces giving congregations Church Union embarrassing at have to let them understand that i know their True meaning and instead of talking to them like a dutch i answer them in the same kind of double talk they understand. This May be the Rea son they often say i wonder what he they some tunes get confused with their own idiom. It s unfortunate that Many men have to learn this language from their wives the hard Way too. Many a Man has taken his wife at her word when she told him not to buy her a birthday anniversary or Christmas gift Only to find her in tears or perhaps enraged by his stupidity in be Lieving that she not want a gift. It would be a wonderful Boon to the human race if every spoke a language that meant just what they wanted it to . I doubt if anyone will Ever be Able to write a suitable translation for women s double talk be cause it has too Many Idioma tic expressions that can not be translated into any language. It would be real Nice and Christian like if people would say what they and what they say. By Rev. Donald g. Ray fort Garry United Church there s lots of talk about Church Union these Days. Is there much happening besides talk do we really want much to Hap pen anyway would Church onion on a Large scale be a Good thing does it much to the Man in the Street does it very much More to the Man in the Pew or is it All just a theological exercise for people whose full time work is the Church does it really matter to a Lay Man whether he worships As a u n i t e d Churchman pentecostal or roman or is it that it matters so much to the clerical group within the churches that they Are Able to impose their will on the rest is Church Union essential to the life of the Church or is it being promoted for the Sake of self Protection is it As some have suggested a final. Last ditch stand Type of thing before the churches go under there Are some who talk of this present time As the Post Christian does this that the Christian Faith and the Christian Church have become obsolete these Are some of the questions that Are being asked throughout the churches. Some of the questions will have no easy lines on life by Stuart e. Rosenberg Star Lake there will be a service at 11 . Sunday at Star Lake sponsored by the White Shell Keswick Fellowship. Miss m. Sighed the rabbi for he will ask me Why have you not been Zusya and what shall i the rabbi understood Well the dilemma even the tragedy 01 human affairs. Society bears in so heavily upon us that often in seems that we can Only fulfil ourselves by playing a role act ing a part becoming something other than ourselves. It is nol easy to hold firm to the image of what we ourselves believe ourselves to be. Always the assignment Given us by the wilful opinions and the false expectations of others seems to trans rend the Call of our own fading voices. Baptist we Are expected to concentrate our energies on making winning friends and pleasing we Are made and unmade by those who surround us with their sections whose limited concern in us stretches no further than their own egos. And for their applause their smiles their grate lation we scrape and Bow Bend and Kneel contorting the form of our own personality that it May conform to their Concep Tion of what we ought to be. If to their own selves not our own we must be True can we Ever be True to anyone if i cannot learn to love my Neighbour As himself with a built in guarantee that i will let him be himself How can i Ever learn to love my Neighbour the vision to see another for what he is and to refuse to condemn him for what he is not comes to those who scrupulously cultivate and defend their own uniqueness and will not barter it for the false prize of popularity. But truth to Tell being True to ourselves alone is Only a half truth. We must couple our self concerns with a willingness to share ourselves with others. We must be ourselves and yet we must be More than ourselves. There Are All too Many examples of men who justify their efforts Only in terms of what it does for them. They forget that a Man must not Only be concerned with what he is doing for himself but what he is doing to himself. We have the moral duty to love ourselves which is to say that if we will not esteem our own persons properly we will never come to understand he need of others for our care and our concern for them. Liis is the lesson we learn from the Man need for Equality Only those who feel equal will perceive and know another Man s Assion for Equality. But beware he Man who believes that he is. More equal than anyone else. 3eware him whose self esteem Reeds sell worship for his love is really a self indulgence which divides rather than Multi plies his links to the lives of others. We walk along the narrow line a tight rope we must try to in ourselves and yet never cease o be More than ourselves. Perhaps this is the pro founder meaning of what seems like a simple commandment love by Neighbour As two eople Are always involved Nev r one alone and always the Steem we have for ourselves must be linked to the love we Hare with others. Answer. But there Are such immense problems facing the be pies of the world these Days tha if the Christian churches have place in the life of men at Al they must give some kind of answer or Point the which the answer May be found world mood can the churches do this while remaining separate in Keepin with the mood of the world today you will get both yes and no for answers. This is just a reflection of the experience of the world in which everything Nowa Days is right whether it s reall right or not. It was our lord s prayer tha May be by our Day Isiora a we to make his prayer just empty mouthing of words a we to stand against what mus surely be the expressed will o god As stated it can there be any justification at Al for the so called churches rather than the Church of Jesus if there can be justification it must Only be on the false basis of human divisive Ness which is surely an expression of the sin of Man. Time come if integration in terms o race is an idea whose time has come surely for the integrity of the gospel and and the lord of the Church Church Union is also an ides whose time has come. And really is not for size or Powei that this is happening although you can believe that these will be Strong temptations which can be resisted Only with the help of god. It is the responsibility of the churches to present to the work the truth of a reconciled com the churches must be come the Church. On Earth does the world need More than just that so that in All the human struggle there May be Hope that All May be think what it would to East and West to Black and White to Rich and poor to liter ate and illiterate to the loved and the Loveless to see the Church of Jesus Christ All Over the world a Community of the forgiven and the forgiving. This is what Church Union could . If it does not happen then try to give a sensible answer to some of the questions which god and Roan will ask. What about your future new Christian science radio Serin Speaks to you with Iran persecution whither the anglican Church Points to note by Rev. A. C. Forrest editor United Church observer when the anglican Congress opens on tuesday with a great procession for the inaugural ser vice in Maple Leaf gardens to Ronto the surprising thing for most of us superficially at least will be How in English it looks. It s natural for i suppose to think of the Church of England As very British. An English accent seems to go with i anglican Liturgy. While we know the anglican Church is Strong in Many parts of the world we May Stie tend to think of it As comprising Little outposts of Empire. Actually according to Bishop Stephen Bayne there Are More anglicans in Church on any Given sunday in Africa than in eng and. And of course there Are More anglicans taking common on at easter in North America than in the British Isles. Missionary Church the cynical of course May come right Back and say that his is because anglicans in eng and Are so careless in their at enhance. But there is More to it Nan that. Others May also say sure you la find anglicans in every part of British Africa for be Church went along with the army and the this too unfair. The anglican Church Las been a great missionary Hurch and in spiritual matters t colonized for the Church of Christ far beyond the boundaries f great Britain s colonial Empire. There Are strange parallels Hough. Now that the Empire has come the Commonwealth and armies and the governors Lave gone Home Queen Eliza eth s subjects whose skins Are Lack and Brown far outnumber of Anglo Saxon heritage. The numerous anglican Aughter churches Are outgrow ing the Mother. A Long time before British col lists abroad were ready to give p their privileges for the Good e the native Peoples anglican lurch men in Asia and Africa relinquishing theirs. When Bishops were first con crated for territories outside be British Isles their sees were it up by Royal letters Patent and archbishop of Canterbury eld jurisdiction Over them. But our score years before Winston Urchill said he was t presid ing Over the dissolution of the Empire the anglican Church be an the process of setting up Elf governing ecclesiastical prov inces overseas. While Honor will be paid to the archbishop of Canterbury at Tor nto and he will be looked upon y Many As the figurative head the anglican churches of the orld his direct pastoral author is Only Over his own diocese Canterbury. It comprises parts Kent and Surrey. I m not going to try and sex Ain the unique position of Canterbury i find even anglicans seem confused or at least they confuse me. Tor the self govern ing churches overseas Canter Bury s Primacy is one of Honor Only. But it is quite an Honor. Pc like so Many things in British tradition leadership from Canter Bury s Lambeth Palace is through Honor accorded rather than by right demanded. The 10-Day Congress will be the most International gathering can Ada has Ever had and when the Bishops from Japan India and Africa and the islands of the seas March Down the aisle where hockey teams play it should be one of the most colourful and in a sense most ecumenical gather Ings we have Ever seen. To me one of the most Gra Cious features of the coming con Gress is the Way the wealthy parts of the Church have helped the poorer parts to get their representatives to Toronto. In can Ada As nearly everyone knows the anglican Church has done Long and faithful work with the eskimos in the far North. The eskimos of the diocese of the arc in have collected to pay he fare of african Bishop Kos Iya Shalita from the Church of Uganda and Ruanda Undi. Youth represented although Christian Young people at the world Council of churches in new Delhi voiced criticism of great confessional gatherings such As the Congress meetings of world presbyterians Luther ans etc., youth will be Well re presented at Toronto. Every Bishop in the anglican world has been invited plus one Clergyman and a Layman from every diocese and two youth de Legates from every ecclesiastical province. Bishop Frederick Wilkin son whose diocese of Toronto is Host to the Council and pays Many of the Bills smiles and says you have to remember the anglican Church is an ecumenical movement in and since the beginning the anglican churches have made a significant and continuing contribution to the world Council of churches. In Many parts of the world self governing anglican churches Are involved in. Union conversations with other churches. Even in eng land conversations Are going with much More Promise and much More Speed than in can Ada with methodists and presbyterians. What of future what does the future hold will the anglican Church break up and disappear into such unions or will other churches disappear into the anglican churches i once asked the archbishop of Canterbury the most Rev. Mic Hael Ramsey about this with the question is it right that the anglican churches believe so strongly in Unity that they Are ready to commit suicide to achieve he replied.
