Manitoba s Safe boating Clini came to this Ontario re sort area last week to show even the Veteran boaters How t handle a boat the clinic now in its fifth the praises of the Lake of the Woods Marine pol ice who this year have Alread investigated 27 water deaths. Belive me it s a hard thing to Tell a Man he can be taught something about boating when he s been on Lake for most of his said Marine police Corporal George Orosy. But the clinic which was staging its first lessons out of Manitoba was a Success. Hundreds of people Learned How to handle a motor boat correctly simple Marine Law How to handle a Cahoe and Mouth to Mouth respiration for reviving drowning victims. The clinic sponsored by lab att s breweries travelled to Kenora lakes Rabbit and Clear water Bay after a Large num Ber of Winnipeg cottage owners requested it. Supervising the clinic is Dav id Boiteau principal of grand Marais elementary school and his two instructors Are univer sity students Robert Taylor 24, and Tom Boyd 20, both of Winnipeg. Bob a Veteran canoeist gives the Canoe lessons while Tom teaches motor boat handling in a boat which has two steering wheels. So far this year the clinic has Given personal instruction in boating and canoeing to people at resorts in both Mani Toba and at Kenora. In four years people have passed clinic. In the past four years the number of boats issued with licences has risen in Manitoba. However the number of boat ing accidents has not risen. While organizers of the. Clinic do not claim direct credit for this they do Point to other provinces without Safe boat ing clinics where water. Acci dents have risen with the in crease in boating licences. If All we did was get people to Wear life jackets while in the said clinic supervisor have Boiteau our clinic would e with this police Corporal Orosy agrees. We Haven t had a drowning Case in this area yet there the Boater was wearing his life he said. The clinic promotes the use of Ife jackets by having the instructors Wear them at All Imes on the water. Every per on climbing into a clinic boat tas to Wear one also. The clinic was started in 1958 following a summer which had High number of drownings in Manitoba lakes. A Survey showed that too Many people owned boats but did t know How to handle them properly said or. Boiteau. Make sure you la never go adrift by John Bennett photography is a natural Hobby to Combine with your outdoors activities. Just think of the wonderful subjects that come your Way while you Are Hunting or fishing. Even Black and White snap shots taken with a Little Box camera look great when they Are pasted up in an album. I m a sucker for a Good photo album even those family jobs where All the kids Are shown Stark naked on a Bear skin Rug. But when i get the Chance to dig into one filled with fishing and Hunting pictures i m really at Home. I be had bad Luck with get Ting records of some of the highlights of my travels. I sure wish i had some shots on a giant Mako shark i played for 8 hours once. This monster spent most of that time jumping great Vic ious leaps 10 or More feet in the air and my pal would t use my cameras he was afraid of breaking them. And since i lost that fighting brute of a shark at the boat Side i Don t even have a Pic Ture of it hanging from the weight Gallows. Lost Chance another experience happened when i was in Convoy during the War and our attack ships blew a a boat to the surface. I stood at the rail almost sick be cause while i had a whole Cam Era outfit aboard it was stuck in the Purser s Safe for secur Ity reasons. In these Days of automation it s easy to take pictures. You can Lay out the Cash for a still camera fitted with a built in exposure meter. But even a Box camera in sufficient when you Are on a fishing trip and your Young hopeful latches on to his first big fish. The Little Box cameras Are not Good enough for great enlargements but they can make a Nice shot for your Wallet. Pictures like this Are great to pull out when the other men Are about their kids. For the outdoors Man who wants to Progress past this simple snapshot stage there Are a dozen or More reasonable priced cameras that will do Al most anything the expensive models can do. My idea of a Good camera for the Semi skilled is the twin Lens reflex that focuses has a de cent shutter Speed say up to of a second and costs about i bought one for my son and he has taken sortie surprisingly Good pictures with it. Using one of these moderate priced cameras the beginner can quickly learn How to take Good general 120 or 127 sized Rolls that give 12 Pic Tures in either Black and White . Many choices for the More advanced there is a whole Range costing up to thousands of dollars with the 35 my As a Fine Choice. To take expert color Side shots of Birds and animals you will need a Long or telephoto Lens and because of the Preci Sion build of the 35 my group this is a Job they do Bette than most other cameras. For the starter in 35 my i suggest something costing around with a stand arc sized Lens. You can get a Choice piece of merchandise for Thi figure and can add lenses am extra accessories As you go along. The telephoto Lens is pretty important in All wildlife photo Graphy As it is vital to fill the whole of your negative Are with the chosen subject. An Eagle Shet in a tree 300 Yards away with a Normal sized Lens will finish up pinhole size on the negative and impossible to see on a color slide Bird pictures need something in the nature of a 400 my Lens these unfortunately Are expensive and have to be use from a tripod if you want Pic Tares free of fuzzy movements. But if you want to put nature on film there s no need to just Hope for Good equipment. Some of the Best color slides of Birds i Ever saw were taken by a housewife from her Kitchen win Dow. She d positioned a feeding Box right in close and shot away from behind the drapes. And of All the pictures that can give you pleasure there s nothing to touch the wonderful Little 8 my movie camera. You can buy one for a Little As and with it you can bring nature Home from a trip and present it on a screen during Winter. By Jim Martenhoff when it comes to ropes the out Boarder is fortunate. To be an old Salt he need Only remember that he handles an Chor lines and Docking lines father than rope. He need master hundreds of names for ropes As did Small boys who ran away to sea in sailing ship Days those lads weren t sailors until they d Learned the the expression has come ashore As Slang today but in those times it was ser ious business. The Only line called a rope and Likely to be found on an outboard is the bucket rope made fast to pail or bucket so water can be dipped up from Lake or Bay. Rope is made from both syn thetic and natural fibres. Sisal and Manila Are natural vege table fibres sisal is coarse and Yellowish Manila finer but Sim Ilar. Sisal is cheap but rots quickly and does t Wear Well especially if stored you can keep a Coil of Quarter Inch sisal aboard for Light throw away applications. Boatmen Are always looking for a Short piece of line for Odd jobs Man Ila lasts far longer but still should not be stored wet must be protected from paint acid gasoline Sand and dirt. Periodically unt Wist Natur Al fiber ropes and examine the inside fibres if broken and worn the rope should be re placed. Synthetic ropes Nylon polyethylene and a few others Are by far the Best Choice for the out Boarder. They Cost More using Fly Rod not. To buy but Are actually cheaper in the Long run. Here s Why they Are stronger so where you d have to use half Inch natural fiber rope you can get by with synthetic Only three eights of an Inch in diameter. That cuts first Cost. Synthetic also is rot proof and lasts far longer. The out Boarder should master a few Basic knots plus the Art of whipping wrapping the end of a line to prevent in Raveling unless you Are using braided rope which need t be the outboard skipper need Only know the bowline pronounced to Lin and the Clove hitch. Any one can learn to handle a Fly Rod after a few practice sessions in the backyard. But there is More to fooling a rising fish than just the cast ing. The fishing experts at Mer Cury have passed on a few Point ers Toh Elp those of us who May be taking our first wobbly Steps in the Art of Fly casting. First you must have a Leader that is absolutely free of. Coils and one which will sink the in Stant it hits the surface. To straighten a Leader pull it through a tightly clasped piece of rubber Cut from a tire inner tube in a draw it across the sole of your Boot. To make it sink apply any of the com Mercial products made for the purpose. Graphite available in Small tubes for lubricating locks and reels will work also dress your dry flies with a silicone preparation to make them float. When flies appear bedraggled from use they can be restored to full life by hold ing them Over the spout of a boiling Teapot. Control your casting ambitions. Most fish Are caught within a distance of 30 feet any Way. Accuracy and delicate presentation Are the two most important factors in conning a fish to strike. Be very gentle in pick ing up the line extremely cautious in out again. This Ste Seth not Only minimizes the chances of spooking fish but it permits the Fly to mss the water and float naturally. Tinder no circumstances should the line or Fly drag across the surface. It must float with the current or wind action. Sometimes a twitch will help. This Means a Quick easy move ment of Only two or three in Ches. The Little things in fishing make a big difference particularly where Fly tackle de. Ring twice fore tying the bowline it Dis tributes Wear better and ass called the Anchor it is also a Good knot for making a Loop to drop Over a Bollard or Post on the Dock. The Clove hitch is simply formed by making two loops one on top of the other As shown in the sketches. Drop the loops Over a Post and pull the hitch tight. Formed in seconds it is useful when you Dock for Brief periods such As to buy More but should t be trusted Over Long periods of time because it has a tendency to work Loose. Study the sketches to learn How to whip the end of a line. A tight wrapping around a rope end prevents unravelling. Lazy out boarders use tape which does to look shipshape and is poor seamanship. Learn the ropes. Out boarders after All need know Only a few. Lay Loop of twine on pass end trim Loose ends
