How to set obedience from children the moment a child begins to display a will of his own the Mother wants to know How can i get him to mind life would be simple so she thinks if she could control her children by saying Don t do the fact that she cannot should make her aware that if she were 100 per cent successful in stifling behaviour with a her children would grow up to be crippled personalities. They have to express some of their desires and act upon their own initiative some of the time in order to grow and develop into Independent beings. The question then is How to get obedience to necessary behaviour the kind of behaviour which is wrong All of the time for All Chil Dren set example you can get it in various ways the first and most difficult of All ways is for the Parent to act As she wants the child to act. This Means she will not for instance slap him for slapping someone else. Then when she says we Don t do that and i won t let you do he knows she is telling the truth. Example is the most forceful lesson in behaviour. Another method is by Sugges let s pick up your toys before daddy gets then if she pitches in with the child and does this often enough just the suggestion you pick up the toys before daddy gets jul probably work. Especially if she is Sweet and pleasant about it and does t act As if she knew he would it. Expect obedience in order to get it. Another suggestion is to Point out to the child the kinds of behaviour which make him seem More grown up. To be grown up is a child s goal. Help him to drive toward it. Daddy will be so proud when he hears you made your own bed. Hell know you Are growing grandma will be thrilled that you wiped All the dishes this noon. That shows you Are grow ing needs distraction sometimes a naughty child needs to be distracted from what he is doing. If a Mother thinks up something else for him to do even while she tells him that what he is doing is disapproved a he will readily fall in with her suggestions. Come with me and Well find a Broom and a bucket can scrub the porch won t that he i i m going to make some cookies and you can grease the pans and help decorate children can be distracted if the Mother is ingenious with her suggestions., another1 Way to control be Havior is to. See that the child carries out a take him by the hand and see that he comes in to a meal takes a Bath goes to the toilet stops teasing the cat Etc. So parents have several strings to their bows acting in desirable ways themselves suggestions at the right time playing on the child s desire to grow up seeing that he does what they know he should and must do. All of these Lead the child along the right paths until he is old enough for reasoning explanations. Obedience and punish ment is a 10-cent Booklet which has helped Many mothers with discipline prob lems.
