Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 12, 1963, Winnipeg, Manitoba 16 pesticide findings stir plea Washington a Interior Secretary Stewart Udall called on Congress today to lift the present limit on appropriations for pesticide re search citing a new report on the Complex effects of pesticides on wildlife. The Interior department re port discloses that among Sam Ples of Young ducks and eggs collected More than 100 Miles North of any known insecticide application the eggs and immature ducks contained More pesticide residues than any adult samples. It and related compounds were involved in the Canadian samples which were taken North of great slave Lake. Scientists assume that the adult ducks were exposed to pesticides somewhere on Migra Tion on wintering areas and passed the residues along to their progeny in a yet unexplained manner that apparently concentrates the chemical Resi the department said. The report says contamination of wild forms is wide despite a report by the entomological society of Amer Ica that 75 per cent of the United states has never been treated by any insecticides and that Only five per cent is treated each year. Supporting its Contention that contamination is widespread the Interior department report said "25 of 26 specimens of Bald Eagle Analysed by the service contain it and of specimens of Birds and mammals in 22 states and the three provinces of Canada 75 per cent contained residues when Analysed. Even in Remote areas of the world animals have residues. Water fowl and their eggs in the far North and resident fish in streams in Alaska were collected on areas far from any known pesticide application and they contained residues of insecticides As did the surrounding vegetation. Explosion averted on ship Auckland . Reuters firemen monday brought under control a Blaze aboard the Brit ish freighter Suffolk that had threatened to explode a cargo of explosives and chemicals. Wearing oxygen masks fire fighters worked in shifts to move hundreds of bags of ammonium Chloride and sodium Carbonate so that other firemen could reach the Blaze.
