Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 13, 1963, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press. Tuesday August 13, 17 Ual Sigurdson s Eagle flies with Ploen Eagle Day still unhappy with fans from an earlier picture was t about to change his opinion monday night. Hear them give it to Kenny Ploen out he sneered. And after All the championships he s taken that club to. But that s the Way it he said philosophically. If you re the quarterback and things go wrong you have to be the the Boos Ploen heard in the second half Only confirmed a Well known truism. Sport fans have Short memories. Day however could t resist the temptation to insert the Needle. The Eagle can probably still hear the Echos raucous shouts which rained Down upon his ears in the same Park last november. On this occasion Winnipeg s supposedly sedate fans made a violent break with tradition and uttered loud rude noises nearly every time Day stepped Over the Ball. The idea was to drown out Day s audible Calls and though it s doubtful this scheme was successful the noise appeared to have an upsetting effect on the proud Calgary quarterback. On occasion Day could be seen stamping his feet in annoyance and generally conducting himself like a Man dissatisfied with his working conditions. Day s displeasure with the Winnipeg football club goes Back even further than his War with the fans. In fact he thought the fans were just Fine when he played Here in 1956, but he still has t forgiven Bud Grant for handing him his walking papers when he tried to make a comeback in 1958. Shoes on other feel oddly enough when Grant decided he could t use Day he tried to Trade him to Calgary. The stampedes had fallen on evil Days and were in need of a competent quarterback. In fact a Trade was completed. Day was to head to Calgary in Exchange for a Long forgotten halfback named Jimmy Morse. Neither reported. Day took off for the Camp of the Washington redskins and Morse tried unsuccessfully to crack the lineup of Green Bay packers. Day eventually made it to Calgary though there must have been times when he wondered Why. During his first year in the Stampede City the Eagle took every bit As sound a she lacking As Ploen suffered tuesday in Calgary. It would t be surprising if a close examination of the Eagle s Pelt disclosed the imprint of Herb Gray s shoulder harness. However from the look of things last night the wheel has made a Complete turn. Though Roger Hamelin and Sherwyn Thor son managed to ruffle the Eagle s pin feathers on a couple of occasions the stampedes were always in control and it was the Winnipeg quarterbacks who were running for their lives. The bombers presented Calgary with a defence showing a lot More fangs than the one. They faced in the opener. Roger Savoie Steve Patrick Hamelin Thorson Jack Delveaux and the rest All had their moments but while they caused a fair amount of commotion it could t compare with the ruckus the Stampede defence raised with the Winnipeg attack. In two games with the stampedes the bombers have proved nothing so conclusively As the fact they can t move the Ball with any degree of consistency. Their Rushing total for the 120 minutes is a starvation diet of 51 Yards. Second Down plays murder the passing has been better but not enough to take up the Slack. And too often the bomber passer has been trapped for a loss. In the bomber Post game dressing room Grant displayed remarkable serenity for a Man who had just had his clock cleaned for the second time in a Row. They were killing us with those second Down he admitted. Time and again we d hold them on first Down and then they d Complete a pass in the Short Grant conceded his troops were Well and fairly beaten but added when you get beaten the first thing you ask yourself is Are we capable of beating this we still Haven t reached the Point where we think it s physically we can t make the mistakes we made tonight and beat them. They re much too Good a team for that. They out personnel us at the moment but we can still see where Victory is possible. If we had t Given them that touchdown and if we had t lost the Ball a penalty when recovered his own. Kick it would have been a pretty close Ball Grant perhaps More tactful than honest said he had t heard the cat Calls for Ploen nor seen the sign bearing the words we want Thornton at unlike Day however he had no quarrel with the fans. That s what they pay their Money he grinned. Someone suggested Calgary was off to an exceptionally fast Start and wondered whether they could maintain the Pace without hitting a slump somewhere along the line. They re a hungry Grant said. That could carry them a Long about then another visitor wanted to know if Grant had t purposely brought his team along slowly this year. W not this he replied. Sign of Winnipeg. Blue bomber quarterback Kenny Ploen right was usually surrounded by red sweaters monday night As bombers bowed 24-8 to Calgary stampedes in football conference game at the stadium. This picture by free press photographer Gerry Cairns drives Home the Point rather Well. No fewer than seven stampedes Are within striking distance of Ploen. At the same time he said halfback George Fleming had been picked up after his release by the Toronto argonauts of the Eastern football conference. A graduate of the University of Iowa Hollis was also with the nil St. Louis cardinals and Pittsburgh Steeles before com ing to Winnipeg. Although he was a quarterback Hollis was attempting to crack the bomber lineup As a right halfback. Obviously the Winnipeg coach ing staff was t satisfied with what Hollis had to offer. Calgary has now won both league starts both at the expense of Bud Grant s defending champs. Tuesday they Defeated Winnipeg 36-27 in the league opener then paused for a deep breath and did it All Over again last night. To the stampedes this is the Heady wine of vengeance. Still smarting from the last second loss to the bombers in last year s Western conference final the stampedes thirst May not yet be satisfied. Counting inc reversal was the fifth straight for the bombers. As Early As the third Quarter they started hearing Grumbl ing from the stands Lovell Coleman who raised Hob with the Winnipeg defence in the opener continued to make a nuisance of himself last night.
