Winnipeg free press monday. September 2, 1963 15 dogs spoil debut trounce rams in opener ouch freshman coach buddy Tinsley of St. James rams winces sunday at something happening on the Field during St. Vital s 27-16 win. The players in the background Are obviously unhappy too. Mss nor if. For 89 of the 144 Days since april 9, the Yankees have occupied first place in the american league. The smothering Lead they have held so Long was created with Mickey Mantle or Roger Maris or both out of the line up. People Are saying suppose they d had that pair in there every Day. Why they d be 25 games in front by now and baseball would be deader than not so. If Mantle had t broken a foot june 5, if Maris had kept his health if Tony Kubek were never injured and Clete Boyer were free of sinking spells if Bill Stafford had t got a sore if Luis Arroyo had t worn out if Ralph Terry were never erratic and Stan Williams had come up with his sidearm sinker before the season opened if in Short Ralph Houk s weight est decision All summer had involved the Choice of sirloin or chops at dinner you know where the Yankees would be today ? in All probability right where they Are give or take a of victories or defeats. Curious but True. Whenever a regular had to be excused Houk has found another Man to do the Job. With everybody sound some of the victories might have been scored More easily than they were by wider margins. More often than not though the Yankee defeats have been the result of Superior pit cling the sort of pitching that probably would have stopped Mantle and Maris the Way Fine pitching usually stops Fine hitting. This in no Way alters the fact that Houk is beyond dispute the manager of the year. He stands out like the bearded lady at boarding school. Of that there is no manner of doubt no prob Able possible Shadow of doubt no possible doubt whatever. Ralph has had the latent the Bench the depth the versatility. Why then should he be hailed As a great manager because he has employed what he had because of the Way he has employed what he had. A Man for All seasons a manager has Only one Job and it in t throwing Jim Bou ton s fast Ball or swinging Joe Pepitone s Bat. His Job is to use the material at hand to the fullest possible advantage. This Houk has done with rare sagacity. Consider Yogi Berra the great coach and part time Catcher who was an outfielder last season. He has been employed chiefly to spell Elston Howard in doubleheaders. On a recent weekend though the Yankees were facing a right handed Pitcher saturday and two left handed starters sunday. Ralph caught Yogi on Satur Day gave Howard the Day off and worked him both games sunday. These two by the Way Are Houk s leading hitters with Howard at .293, Berra .292. Howard also leads in Home runs and runs batted in. There in t a .300 hitter on the team except Mantle who in t really on the team. Consider the Many uses Houk has made of Harry Bright and Jack Reed and John Blanchard and Phil Linz. Last year Tom Tresh started As a Rookie shortstop and the team was in first place when Kubek returned from the army. Tresh moved to the Outfield and helped win the world championship. This year Tom is a Centre fielder who would be the team s fourth shortstop if necessary be Hind Kubek Boyer and Linz. The major s platoons when Arroyo had to go Al Downing Carne up but not Houk made it Clear As a Relief Pitcher. Two Days later Downing did work in Relief but since then he has been a starter. One hitters two hitters three hitters he pitches them to order. No communicant of the two platoon Faith Houk has by Neces sity Plato Ned his men As freely As Casey Stengel used to do. Players who muttered darkly when Casey shifted them around seem to take it with better Grace from the Iron major yet the results Are the same. There have been times this summer when another manager might have panicked. Once when Kubek joined the walking wounded it looked As though one More Straw would bring the Camel to its Knees. Least maj. Houk remained Calm though he was As keenly aware of the danger As anybody else. Nobody knew better than he that the most vulnerable spot was behind the plate yet he also knew that even if the blow were to fall there he would still have Blanchard who had t caught an inning All year but could do the Job if needed. They Haven t yet surprised the major without another shot in his locker. By Korky Koroluk the St. Vital bulldogs sunday picked up where they left off last season defeating St. James rams 27-16 in the opening game of the Manitoba senior football league schedule. It was a rough initiation for buddy Tinsley making ills coach ing debut at the Helm of the rams. Outplayed throughout the game rams nevertheless found themselves even at 14-14 at the half and leading 16-14 after three quarters. But a 67-Yard Romp by half Back Barry Clarke late in the fourth Quarter broke rams backs. It set up the game win Ning touchdown by quarterback Stan Unger and was followed on the next sequence by an insurance major by Jim Kirkness. Clarke scored the first two St. Vital touchdowns. Bob Kuryk booted two converts and Bob Miller kicked a single. For the rams Hanhel and Garry Moore counted majors with Norm Lampe converting both. Jack Robinson added a single and Quarter Back Bill Drozda scored an other single on a booming 61-Yard Quick kick. The dogs struck quickly scor ing the second time they got their hands on the Ball. Forcing rams to punt from behind their own goal line the dogs took Over on the St. James 45 and scored four plays later. Jerry Morlock took the hand off got past the line of scrim Mage and lateral led to Clarke who completed the 24-Yard play. Bulldogs added another Point before the end of the first Quarter when Bob Miller lifted a 49 Yard punt into the ram end zone where Ernie Kyfiuk conceded. The second bulldog major also came off a March from the St. James 45. Clarke ran for 14 Yards then took a pass for an other 24 before diving Over from the two. A 24-Yard pass from Wayne Henkel to Bill Shields set up the first ram score with Henkel crashing Over from the four. Lampe converted. U tile rams took nine plays to cover 85 Yards for their second to. The key play was a pass interference Call against St. Vital on a 40-Yard heave from Henkel to Dick Koehler. Moore finally went Over from the three and Lampe converted again. The Only scoring of the third Quarter was the two singles bj1 St. James one on Drozda s Quick kick. The kick surprised no one in the. Park except the St. Vital de fenders. Drozda went into the spread formation on first Down and threw an in completed pass he Quick kicked from the spread on second Down a Boot that travelled 61 Yards. The defending Canadian champs were still facing the two Point deficit with five min utes to go when Norm Stapon playing right tackle broke Clarke Loose on the 67-Yard run. Three plays after the to rams fumbled while gambling on a third and 15 situation and Bob Miller recovered on the ram 30. Six plays later Kirkness carried the mail for the final score of the Day. Cleat Marks As happens every year a few of the bulldog veterans who announced their retirement were Back in harness for the first game. In this category sunday were Ted Mik Fiechuk and Norm Stapon. And Wayne Hanna says he will be Back at workouts this week. Both teams Are Short on conditioning and had As much trouble with the hot afternoon Sun As with the opposition. The bulldogs were tackling poorly especially in the second half. Both teams go Back to the practice Field this week with a recess wednesday to watch the Steinbach Elmwood game at the stadium. Rams swing Back into action at Stemback Satur Day and bulldogs tackle Elm Wood sunday at the Chalmers Community club. Bobbie was Dew. One of those moments arrived sunny sunday afternoon at the stadium As the firm pegs salvaged a split with Walt Dixon s St. Cloud Rox who Are bringing up the rear in the Northern league race. The Rox punished the goodies 5-1 in the opener but the locals bounced Back for a 6-2 Triumph that halted a seven game losing Streak in the second seven inning game. The Rox and Gold eyes who meet in a Eye opener this morning bring the curtain Down on the 63 season with a . Game under the lights. Slender Bobbie Dews the splendid sprinter from Georgia muscled his Way into the spotlight sunday sharing some of the Home run glory in which Coco Laboy has. Basked most of the season. Laboy crashed his 21st Fence Buster of the year in the second game win. But Dews hit his first which also is significant. In fact it was an Bobbie Dews outright rarity. The frequency rate at which Dews hit Home runs is .0003. The Odds against it happening Are a foreboding 351.5 to one. The blow shattered the air in the second inning of the finale and the speedster s 100th hit of the season. Not since 1962 410 at bats ago had Dews hit one out. Strangely he s hit one and Only one every season since breaking into organized Ball with Daytona Beach in i960. The other big Winnipeg hit be sides Laboy s smash was a lost in the Sun triple by winning Pitcher Dave Bakenhaster who combined with Dale Erickson on a two hitter. Catcher John Felske s Homer with a Man aboard in the fourth produced the St. Cloud runs. Dixon and plate Umpire Stu Himes had a difference of Opin Ion in the sixth. Dixon lost the i argument and left. I the Burly St. Cloud manager added some comic Relief by Paus ing Long enough to shake the first base bleacher. Screen while growling menacingly at the Ariter. Hal Haydel a Fine looking pitching Prospect numbed the oldies in the opener running Lis impressive record to 12-9 with a last place team. The Rox got of starter John Van for two runs a the third inning and added Siree at the expense of Fred Herrmann in the fourth. Floyd Wicker s third hit of the drove in Winnipeg s Only run depriving Haydel of a shut out. Game times today Are . And . As the eyes of 63 bid Farewell.
