Winto Teg free press monday september 23, 1963 Manitoba the terrible turbulent years 8 he lived and died by Force one of a series describing the Days when despair and violence stalked Manitoba and How simple human Cour age finally triumphed to Mold the province As we know it today by Ray Tulloch Owen Keveny was a highly principled energetic disciplinarian who led Tjie first colonists to red River quelled a shipboard Mutiny served As second in com Mand of the District of Assini Boia and was brutally murdered because of his unpopularity. His life and his passing reflected the turmoils of Manitoba s Early Days the nature of the men who left Home and country to conquer a wilderness and if possible the free traders con testing the Hudson s Bay com Pany s monopoly. He lived by Force and he died by it. In 1812 lord Selkirk named Keveny Leader of the first party of settlers made up of Irish and hebridean. To journey to red River. A Man of steadiness activity and he showed a less attractive Side of his character when he firmly put Down a Mutiny organized by an Drew Langston an irishman. Lord Selkirk praised Keveny for his handling of the situation but suggested that subtlety and tact Are weapons equal to strength. Fiery temper when Keveny reached the settlement he was appointed first in or second in command. He stayed in the Colony for a year then returned to Ireland. In the fall of 1815 he returned to Hudson Bay where he fitted out a boat in the Spring. With a Crew of four irishmen and two mixed bloods he headed up the network of Rivers towards the settlement. The irishmen quarrelled continually and would t obey Keveny. His fiery temper soon him. A Young Man his terms of ser vice completed was returning to his native land to help his aged parents. Keveny ordered him seized and thrown into his own boat. The irishmen did t escape unscathed. Whenever one was Dis obedient Keveny made him run the Gauntlet or had him tied to a tree where he Felt the bite of a lash. Watched both the disciplinarian did t relax for a minute. At night he had a sentry guard the boat while a second one paced in front of the Leader s tent. Keveny spent the night watching both of them. An unfortunate sentry fell asleep one night when Keveny All but three of his men took to the Woods got the better of was making his rounds. The Man woke up As Keveny was kicking him. Before he could flee or re Sist a Bayonet was jabbed into his thigh and Keveny retired for the night leaving the sentry to staunch the bleeding. On another occasion an exhausted oarsman fell asleep in his seat. Keveny filled his gun with powder and fired it in the sleeping Man s face burning the skin completely. As the unhappy boat neared the Winnipeg River the Crew met some indians and for the first time Learned of the massacre of seven Oaks and the flight of the settlers. Keveny of course pushed on. Three ran off in two Days All but three of his men took to the Woods. They wanted no part of the danger that awaited them at red River. Ever resourceful Keveny ordered his clerk to steer the boat and the four men did the heavy work of seven or eight men. I j Nally after a superhuman Strug Gle they reached the lower Falls on the Winnipeg River some 16 Miles away from a North West co. Fort. For the first time since Leav ing Albany Keveny told his men to rest and distributed extra rations. He fell into a deep sleep and the three men fled towards the North West outpost. There they described Keveny s conduct and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Under an Imperial act of 1803 Canadian courts had jurisdiction Over Rupert s land and the Indian territories one of Keveny s men was sworn in and he served the War rant on his former master. The prisoner was treated kindly at the fort. But cowardice was t one of his vices. During merry making in the Post a Canoe brigade had just arrived he tried to scale the stockade. He was caught immediately and placed under armed guard. Sent away after a few Days of this treat ment Keveny was sent to fort William in a Canoe manned by three mixed bloods. He never arrived. A native returned to the fort and silently presented Kev Eny s papers books wine Flagon candlestick and cups. Months later the full Story of his mysterious disappearance was related to lord Selkirk at a hearing in fort William. Two Canadian witnesses Testi fied that they had met two Small canoes near Pine Point. One contained a Man called Keveny in hand cuffs and his wrists Swol Len.
