Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - September 22, 1964, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press tuesday september 22, 1964 17 repercussions loom Over ruling behind the bombers Winnipeg Blue bombers Are experiencing one of the most disastrous seasons in the history of the club. It May Well be they will not win another football game this season particularly since the injury list grows longer As each game is played., while there was criticism of the team and coach Bud Grant earlier in the season fans now appear to be rallying behind the club realizing that under the circumstances they Are giving their Best and then some. I Don t think i be Ever been prouder of the bombers than i was last saturday said one fan to this Corner. Sure they lost but they gave it All they had and that s what counts in my another who has never been a great admirer of quarterback Kenny Ploen admitted quite frankly monday that he thought the native of Iowa turned in a Brilliant performance against Saskatchewan roughriders. Because he is playing with a tailed club there is not much likelihood Ploen will even be in the running for All Star Quarter Back honors this year. But if the voters Ever stopped to consider what he has done under most Adverse circumstances he d prob ably win the Honor without too much opposition. Unfortunately they usually go with a Winner although this did t apply when Kenny was leading the bombers to three Grey cups. Admires their spirit because bombers played so Well in a losing Effort last sat urday a. W. Moore a local football enthusiast Felt compelled to sit Down and write a complimentary letter to this column. It was on our desk when we arrived i the office monday morning. Or. Moore comments i just could t let another Day go by without expressing my feelings of a truly courageous and proud team such As our Blue bombers. I have to admit very reluctantly that i have been one of Many fans who have been Down on or. Grant our bombers and everybody associated with them. But with each game you can t help but Admire the poise and team spirit of a group of men who Don t want to be beaten and won t be beaten in desire Pride and sheer guts. The fans wanted an exciting team with new faces. All i can say is they have one in Spades. Charlie Shepard made a remark on radio the other Day that we would come alive in 69. Well i m afraid Charlie is four years out because the bombers will arrive in 65. Let s see if the fans Are As proud As our football team and Back them by showing up at the we Are delighted to print the above letter because it belies the Oft repeated observation that Winni Eggers will support nothing but a Winner. We Are sure or. Moore s comments express the feelings of Many football fans in this City. True they May be extremely critical but in this respect they Are no different to those of other cities who May have losing teams. A bad Call maybe off the Vest Green Bay packers went Down to defeat at the hands of Baltimore sunday because Paul Hornung missed converting a touchdown but a lot of fans who watched the nil game on television were second guessing the packers Bart Starr when he threw a third Down pass late in the game which was intercepted the packers were in Good Field goal scor ing position at the time and a three Pointer was All they needed to win with two straight losses and quarterback y. A. Tittle on the injured list it looks As if Al Sherman s new York giants Are in trouble this season if the giants Don t come up with a win in their next couple of games we imagine the wolves will Start to give coach Sherman a bad time of it particularly since he traded off a number of name players before the season opened but Sherman should have a thick skin after All he coached Here did t he Ken Venturi predicts that John and Dick Lotz of Hayward calif., the first Brothers to join the pro Golf tour simultaneously will Start winning prize Money almost immediately. Inci dentally the Brothers Are sponsored by a family corporation Golf management inc. Which guarantees them each per month for the next two years while they test their skills on the pro circuit Nice work if you can get it it s still too Early to determine whether or not there will be any repercussions from the univer sity of Manitoba s ruling regard ing students playing for outside teams but varsity officials Are confident they Are taking a major step towards inter collegiate athletics at the fort Garry campus., head coach George Depres of the football bosons was Satis fied that the school s physical education department did the right thing. We had a number of boys clubs ask us to impose such a St Ltd Depres. They Felt it would take the Hook with their current the Bison coach Felt that Diset Dent players would How up at the team s training Camp within the next few Days not much be cause they fear losing their athletic privileges but More so because they truly want to play for the University in the coming season. V Depres would t offer any currently playing for outside comment on stories that a local Junior team would test the ruling program and is not meant to in a court of Law. Meanwhile non University teams received a copy of the varsity regulation and an accompanying letter from a. J. Fraser director of intercollegiate the letter.
