Wankowicz 72, on charges of conveying false information abroad. He is to be tried under a 1946 Law dealing with particularly dangerous crimes during the period of reconstruction of the or. Wankowicz was one of the 34 signatories of a letter sent r earlier this year to the polish Premier in protest against the 1 government s restraint on the Freedom of discussion. The publication of the letter caused one of the Sharp est political engagements be tween the polish communist party leadership and the writers in recent years. The signatories have under the greatest pressure to withdraw their names and some of them have Given Way on the grounds that the letter was not intended for publication abroad. Or. Wankowicz is one of 12 signatories who have refused to withdraw their names apparently on the grounds that the Validity of the argument was not affected by its publication.
