Centre 636 Sargent of pm. 786-3347 relics found Churchill site yields old tools by David Hardy Flint cutting tools believed used by Man More than years ago have been discovered near Churchill Man., by prof. W. J. Meyer Oakes head of the department of anthropology and sociology at the University of Manitoba. The professor made the discoveries during a two Day search of thes Ite at twin lakes together with Timothy Fiske research associate in archaeology at the University. The site is about 15 Miles South of Hudson Bay in a swamp area. After sweeping off a thin layer of Snow prof. Meyer Oakes discovered several instruments including Burins which Are Flint tools used for carving and Shap ing other instruments. Tie professor said in an interview that the purpose of the visit was to evaluate the site for intensive future work. The two men Ivarre also Able to provide evidence of soil deposition condition and file which enabled them to pinpoint the possible age of the finds. Found in 1960 the site was originally discovered and reported in 1960 by Joseph Robertson a member of the provincial wildlife Branch and founding member of the Manitoba archaeological society. Later or. William Irving for Merly of the University of wis Consin and now in charge of the Western division activities in archaeology for the National museum of Canada collected flints from the site. A report on the findings has been produced by Robertson Irv ing and Meyer Oakes with Finan Cial assistance from the univer sity of Manitoba Coin Mittee on Northern studies. Prof. Meyer Oaks said that All of the work was sponsored by the committee under Grants from the Federal department of Northern affairs. The work done so far he stated provided needed data for the studies being currently made of the surface collection previously gathered As Well As a basis for More intensive studies in 1965. Summer Start the professor said he hoped that work would begin seriously on the site in june or july. He believed that the site they had investigated might possibly have been a Camp for a group of pre Dorset eskimos. The site was on raised ground. It was possible he that the area surrounding this portion of land had been covered by water centuries ago and the eskimos had lived on an Island. The tools which had been found were similar to tools which had previously been discovered throughout the Arctic Circle. They were usually regarded As evidence that primitive Man had lived in a certain area. He was confident that the digging next year would uncover information which would enable them to learn a great Deal about the site and the people who lived there. Prof. Meyer Oakes received his training at the University of Chi Cago. He taught at universities in Toronto and Oklahoma before coming to Manitoba.
