Hints from Heloise a Heloise Cruse dear folks guess who s been sneaking up on us 01 Saint Nick and hell be coming Down the Chimney sooner than you think so before you buy your tree Here ate a few cautions Don t be in a hurry when you make this Purchase. Don t buy a Christmas tree if the branches Are dead looking. Always look for a fresh tree you can test this by seeing if the Needles Are Brittle run your hand up and Down a Branch and if any Needles fall off beware Mot Only will the tree perhaps not last Dur ing the holidays but it can also be a terrible fire Hazard. Another Way to test the tree is to pick it up in your hands and a apr the base of the tree on something nerd such As a piece of Concrete or Wood Etc. If you Sec Needles tumbling Down put it Back in the pile and go look for another one. Never bring a dead or dying tree into your Home. Each year during the holidays Sor Row has come to Many fam Ilies for just this reason. Don t let it happen to you. After you find a Good Green tree and take it Home always put it in a pail of water. Be sure that the base is in at least six inches of water. Some people put sugar or a tree preservative in the water. If you use sugar in the water use about one fourth cup to a pail of. Water. And the Best lesson we have Learned Over the years when shopping for our tree is to take our stand along with us. Usually the fellow who is Selling the Trees will Cut those Bottom branches off so the tree will fit your stand. This saves a lot of trouble when you get Home. Ever tried to Lind dial saw around Christmas time cautions never put old lights or even a new string of lights on your tree without testing them first. The Way to do this is one set of lights at a time and then wiggle once or twice but umpteen times and if you see any of them Flicker then you have a Short some place. Do not put this set of lights on your tree until that Short is repaired properly. This advice is Worth its weight in Gold. Be sure to protect your floors and carpets in Case the tree branches drip sap or the Container leaks or Johnny spills the water when he refills it from Day to Day and remember that Container of water must be kept filled. If your tree is exceptionally dry it will drink water like mad. The Best Way i have found to protect floors and carpets is to put a piece of heavy plastic on the carpet first then cover it with newspapers. This can always be Cov ered with a Sheet. And if you cover it with Cotton be sure it is Flameproof. Then stand your tree on this. And Mother Don t decor ate that Christmas tree alone. Wait until All of the family Are Home some night and pop a big Batch of Popcorn. Cover your floor with news papers to protect it better to Roll up a Batch of newspapers than to clean the Lay out All of your decorations on the paper and decorate the tree together. If you Don t like it and it s not perfect you can change it the next Day. Just remember this is one time when com Munion with your family is at its top. Let s All enjoy it.
